Book excerpt: Understanding enzyme kinetics and structure-function relationship enables us to explain the metabolic regulation and integration. The information also helps us understanding action of specific toxins, drug metabolism and disease pathogenesis. This enables us to invent suitable interventions to circumvent unfavourable and invest the favourable effects on enzymes and to design more efficient biocatalysts for therapeutic and industrial uses. This book presents all of the fundamental knowledge of enzymology in a very simple way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Clinical Enzymology presents a critical review of the nature and diagnostic value of enzymes. It discusses the characteristics of iso-enzymes; the enzymes changes in myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathies, and non-ischemic heart failure; and the characteristics of enzymes studied in African heart disease. Some of the topics covered in the book are the simple enzyme kinetics; classification of enzymes; description of activators and co-enzymes; mechanics of enzyme inhibition; effects of drugs in enzyme reactions; function of the cell membrane; distribution of enzymes; mechanism of enzyme increase; and enzyme changes in disease. The causes of increased phosphatase activity and the evaluation of molecular theory are discussed. An in-depth analysis of the use of iso-enzymes to determine the source of increased serum enzyme activity in disease is provided. The enzyme changes in congestive heart failure not due to myocardial infarction are presented. A chapter is devoted to the liver function and enzyme changes in hepatic amoebiasis. The book can provide useful information to cardiologists, biologists, students, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Enzymology provides concise information on an important area of the subject, Biochemistry. This may serve as course material for an advanced treatise in Enzymology designed for undergraduate science degree programs, especially B.Sc. (Hons ) Biochemistry and Chemistry. The book is in 12 chapters which has been divided into four distinct sections, thus (1) Basic enzyme chemistry and physiology. (2) Enzyme Kinetics, (3) Enzyme catalysis, Mechanisms and Regulation,(4)Applications of Enzymology. The Part 1 consists of four chapters that deal with the nature of enzymes- (history, properties and classifi cation), enzyme physiology; structure of enzymes, and analytical enzymology. Part 2 deals with Enzyme Kinetics which is treated in three chapters, and Part 3, made up of three chapters discuss Enzyme catalysis, mechanisms and regulation. Lastly, Part 4 consisting of two chapters deal with the applications of enzymology. Signifi cantly, the kinetics of enzyme catalyzed reactions in diverse experimental conditions, and also under various inhibition types are presented in a simple, mathematical lucid approach. The mechanisms of action for two atypical proteins-chymotrypsin and lysozyme, so also the identifi cation of active sites of enzymes by specifi c labels are discussed concisely. Lastly, the specifi c applications of enzymes in diagnostic medicine, industry, and also the new emerging area of enzyme biotechnology and enzyme bioinformatics are presented

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enzymology in the Practice of Laboratory Medicine focuses on disease processes, enzymatic reactions and activities, and diagnosis and management of diseases. The selection first offers information on developments in the search for mechanisms of enzymic catalysis; application of the spin labeling technique to biological membranes; and the properties of membrane bound enzymes involved in energy transduction processes. Discussions focus on possible clinical interrelationships of membrane function, mitochondrial membrane transactions, mechanical details of chymotryptic catalysis, and physical nature of globular proteins. The text then elaborates on metalloenzymes, enzyme measurement, and enzymology, clinical chemistry, and development of fast analyzers. The publication examines the analytical uses of immobilized enzymes; origin of serum enzymes and the basis for their variation; and the screening methods for glycolytic enzyme deficiencies in red blood cells. Topics include factors contributing to normal variation of enzyme activity, catabolism of enzymes, mechanism of release from cells to plasma, and determination of urea in blood and urine. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in the application of enzymology in laboratory medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest and research in urinary enzymology were incited about three decades ago by reports that urinary enzymes are elevated in diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. Of the more than 40 hydrolases, oxidoreductases, transferases, and lyases identified in human and animal urine, only ten or so are being used as diagnostic indicators. Recognition of the quantitative distribution of enzymes in the various anatomical and functional parts of the nephron and advances in our understanding of the handling of proteins by the kidney have made it possible to associate urinary enzyme activity patterns with physiological and pathophysio logical functions of the nephron. Confidence in the diagnostic value of urinary enzymes is not unanimous among clinicians and among scientists. The main reason for the difference in opinion may well be that the variability in data exceeds the variability one is accustomed to in the diagnostic enzymology of blood plasma enzymes. In contrast to plasma enzymes, which are protected by an "enzyme friendly" milieu, enzymes released into the urine encounter an "enzyme hostile" environ ment: no or little protective protein, variable pH, variable volume, variable metabolite and salt concentrations, variable concentrations of enzyme in hibitors. Through advances in methodology some of these factors can now be controlled; standardization of urine collection periods and preanalytical treat ment are as important as optimization of assay methods.

Book excerpt: Molecular and Cellular Enzymology addresses not only experienced enzymologists but also students, teachers and academic and industrial researchers who are confronted with enzymological problems during their fundamental or applied research. In this field there is an urgent need for training in order to meet the requirements of both research and industrial endeavours. This book consists of several levels. Practical aspects and elementary explanations are given for the benefit of non-specialists’ and students’ understanding. In order to facilitate the task of students, two typographies have been adopted. The main text corresponds to basic knowledge, whereas text in a smaller font provides more specialised information. Specialists will also find topics more deeply expounded with the principal bibliographic references cited. The bibliography, however, is not exhaustive; the choice includes general books and review articles as well as some specialised articles. In this book, for the first time, the different molecular and cellular aspects of enzymology are presented together. Until now, there has been no book available in which these different aspects are treated in the same volume. In addition, besides the theoretical developments, this book provides a wealth of practical information for experimentalists.
