Book excerpt: This book presents the latest findings in medical entomology in Japan and neighboring Asian countries. It provides an overview of the current issues of medically important arthropods in this region and also refers to the issues that are likely to become more serious in the near future. It helps us understand that addressing the arthropod issues is not enough in limited regions, but requires a coordinated response throughout these regions. Global warming and globalization are affecting both vector and vector-borne diseases, causing rapid changes in their distribution and ecology. From the perspective of global pest control, the book focuses not only on domestic pests in Japan but also on pests in neighboring Asian countries including the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc., which are geographically and economically close to Japan. Japan has experience of eradicating malaria and lymphatic filariasis, drastically reducing the number of cases of Japanese encephalitis patients, and succeeded in controlling flies in the metropolis of Tokyo. The know-how learned and created from these past successes should provide valuable information for other parts of Asia that are still struggling with pest infestation today. With the growing interest in these issues worldwide, this book provides essential information in medical entomology for researchers, including students and early career researchers. By integrating the latest findings in medical entomology with past successes and experiences in the field, the book is also a valuable reference for many professionals planning sustainable pest control.

Book excerpt: Medical Entomology has in course of time undergone a transformation from a mere traditional knowledge of the discipline to the one that stresses emphatically on harvesting a plethora of insects' infinite 'biomedical' properties. Our familiarity with the medically important insects and other arthropods has, therefore, been expanded in this book to explore unlimited biomedical significance of these tiny yet most successful creatures on earth with about four million species. In addition to having a first-hand information on the pestilent/ vectorial importance of arthropods, particularly various vector-borne infections, an ingenious attempt has been made to unveil their medicinal value in different contexts. Having au fait with the fact that environment plays a key role in regulating disease epidemiology of a given vector-borne infection, adequate emphasis is laid to trace the various pathways governing the linkages amongst the vector-pathogen-host triad. The book offers a detailed account of various poisonous and injurious arthropods, along with the venoms' action on the human being. The book should hopefully serve a good purpose to both the students of zoology and medicine as well as professional researchers.

Book excerpt: Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understanding of the arthropod's biology. Knowledge will be needed not only of its direct relationship to any parasite or pathogen that it transmits but also of its structure, its life history and its behaviour - in short, its natural history. Above all, it will be necessary to be sure that it is correctly identified.

Its uniqueness is that its emphasis is on disease as opposed to arthropods. It includes general discussions of epidemiology, transmission, disease control, vector control and disease surveillance. In addition, it contains chapters oriented towards the many specific arthropod-borne diseases. Furthermore, the book discusses the many direct impacts that parasitic insects have on human and animal health. The arthropods themselves are dealt with in two introductory chapters.

Durden, published in 2002 and 2009, respectively, have been highly praised and become widely used as a textbook for classroom instruction. This fully revised third edition continues the focus on the diversity of arthropods affecting human and animal health, with separate chapters devoted to each of the taxonomic groups of insects and arachnids of medical or veterinary concern, including spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks. Each chapter includes sections on taxonomy, morphology, life history, and behavior and ecology, with separate sections on those species of public-health and veterinary importance. Each concludes with approaches to management of pest species and prevention of arthropod-borne diseases. The third edition provides a comprehensive source for teaching medical and/or veterinary entomology at the college and university level, targeted particularly at upper-level undergraduate and graduate/postgraduate programs. In addition to its value as a student textbook, the volume has appeal to a much broader audience, specialists and non-specialists alike. It provides a key reference for biologists in general, entomologists, zoologists, parasitologists, physicians, public-health personnel, veterinarians, wildlife biologists, vector biologists, military entomologists, the general public and others seeking a readable, authoritative account on this important topic. Book excerpt: This revision of the subgenus Pseudoficalbia Theobald, genus Uranotaenia Lynch Arribalzaga of Southeast Asia deals with 42 species. The taxonomic treatment of the subgenus includes a revised morphological description, followed by a review of the distribution, taxonomic discussion, internal classification and bionomics. Treatment of individual species follows essentially the same format. A new internal classification with separate discussions and descriptions of 5 groups is presented. The 5 groups, with world mosquito faunal regions as defined by Belkin (1962), are as follows: harrisoni series (Indomalayan), bicolor series (Ethiopian, Indomalayan, Malagasy, North Australian, Oriental, Papuan and South Pacific), bimaculata series (Indomalayan, Oriental and Palaearctic), maxima series (Indomalayan, Nearctic, Oriental and Palaearctic), recondita series (Indomalayan, North Australian, Oriental and Papuan). Where known, extralimital species are assigned to the groups defined for Southeast Asia. Of the 42 species treated, 13 are described as new and 29 are revalidated and redescribed. The 13 new species are: abdita (Cambodia and Thailand), abstrusa (Philippines), albipes (Thailand), approximata (Thailand), confusa (Philippines and Sulawesi, Indonesia), enigmatica (Thailand), harrisoni (Mindoro Island, Philippines and Sabah, Malaysia), moufiedi (Sabah, Malaysia), nocticola (Thailand), patriciae (Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand), propinqua (Malaysia), quasimodesta (Sabah, Malaysia) and reinerti (Sabah, Malaysia). Seventy-six full-page plates of illustrations are provided of the following: adult habitus parts (16 species), pupa (35 species), larva (37 species) and male terminalia (40 species). A majority of these are presented here for the first time. Keys to the adults, pupae and fourth stage larvae of Southeast Asian species are provided. New synonyms proposed here are: kalabahensis Haga and lagunensis Baisas (=bicolor Leicester).
