Book excerpt: A RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel Workshop held in San Diego, California, in October 1998 brought together Aeromedical Trainers to discuss current Aeromedical Training Programmes and to present new approaches to this training. Various approaches to Aeromedical Training were also discussed and STANAG 3114 "Aeromedical Training of Flight Personnel" was reviewed. Presentations included: categories of training, subjects taught, frequency of training, duration of courses, period of validity and altitude chamber profiles utilized. Most NATO countries were present and provided overviews of their programmes, as did representatives from Poland and the Czech Republic. Presentations also included new approaches to Aeromedical Training including: Simulator Based Physiology Training (SYMPHYS), Simulator Based Disorientation Training and In-Flight Disorientation Training. The Workshop recommended changes to STANAG 3114 including, but not limited to: removal of the split between Rotary and Fixed-wing aircraft training requirements, addition of the requirement for instruction on aeromedical aspects of new Life Support Equipment and addition of the requirement for a practical Spatial Disorientation experience during refresher training. Also recommended was the establishment of a Working Group to study the variation between countries in rates of Decompression Illness from altitude chamber exposure. It was also recommended that NATO validate the need for a new STANAG on Night Vision Training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI). CAMI is part of the FAA's Office of Aerospace Medicine (OAM). As an integral part of the OAM mission, CAMI has several responsibilities. One responsibility tasked to CAMI's Aerospace Medical Education Division is to assure safety and promote aviation excellence through aeromedical education. To help ensure that this mission becomes reality, the Aerospace Medical Education Division, through the Airman Education Programs, established a one day post-crash survival course. This course is designed as an introduction to survival, providing the basic knowledge and skills for coping with various survival situations and environments. If your desire is to participate in a more extensive course than ours you will find many highly qualified alternatives, quite possibly in your local area. Because no two survival episodes are identical, there is no "PAT" answer to any one-survival question. Your instructors have extensive background and training, and have conducted basic survival training for the military. If you have any questions on survival, please ask. If we don't have the answer, we will find one for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is intended for use by all Army crewmembers in meeting requirements set forth in Army Regulation 95-1, Training Circular 1-210, and other appropriate aircrew training manuals. Lessons learned from previous military conflicts and recent contingency operations have caused changes in Army aviation doctrine. With the development of more sophisticated aircraft and weapons systems, Army crewmembers must be capable of operating these systems around the clock, in austere environments, and under adverse conditions. The hazards of stress and fatigue in combat operations and concept of operations will eventually take a toll in aircrew performance and could jeopardize mission accomplishment unless crewmembers are trained to recognize and understand these hazards. Proper training prepares crewmembers and prevents stress and fatigue from reducing mission effectiveness, thereby increasing their chances of survival. Training Circular 3-04.93 provides crewmembers with an understanding of the physiological responses that can occur in the aviation environment. It also describes the effects of the flight environment on individual mission accomplishment. In addition, this publication outlines essential aeromedical training requirements (in Chapter 1) that assist commanders and flight surgeons in conducting aeromedical education for Army crewmembers. Subject areas addressed are by no means all inclusive but are presented to assist crewmembers in increasing performance and efficiency. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.

Book excerpt: This classic 1956 edition of the US Air Force Survival manual will be enjoyable reading for anyone interested in the Cold War, survival and the wilderness, or American cultural history. Viewers who enjoy movies like Dr. Strangelove, Fail Safe, and Strategic Air Command will find this a fascinating look into the mindset of the era's aviators. Survival under adverse conditions ranging up to hot war was a very real concern. Dozens of US aircraft were shot down during the Cold War. From the Foreword by General Nathan Twining: This Manual is designed for use of students in the Air Force survival training courses. It amplifies AFM 64-5, Survival, by including training information not covered in the kit edition because of weight and size of limitations. AFM 64-3 can also be used as a source book of survival information. It includes much detailed information which would have been beyond the intended scope of the smaller publication; it tells the reader not only what he must do but also why he must do it. Because of the global responsibilities of the United States Air Force, all Air Force personnel face the possibility of survival in a remote or desolate area of the world. It is the purpose of this Manual to prepare all personnel participating in flights on military aircraft for an intelligent approach to any possible survival situation. The reader is shown that nature and the elements are- neither friendly nor hostile and that the training and attitude he carries with him will determine his success in survival. The Manual opens with a discussion of the problems and techniques of general land survival: psy-chological problems, immediate action, camping and woodcraft, travel, clothing, signaling, food, and other related subjects. Then the ensuing chapters cover the special requirements for survival in the follow-ing areas: Arctic, desert, Tropics, sea, and sea ice.

Written for use in formal United States Air Force survival training courses, the U.S. Air Force Survival Handbook is the bible for pilots who want to stay alive-no matter what. Assuming, as the Air Force does, that flight personnel may be faced at any time with a bailout or crash landing in hostile territory without supplies, the advice here is superlatively practical, but also surprisingly readable and interesting. Detailing specific survival threats at sea, in the tropics, in the desert, in Arctic conditions, and the psychological perils of imprisonment and torture, this handbook is replete with fascinating and useful (if unsettling) information. Precisely written, profusely illustrated, and completely authoritative, this is an essential book for anyone-soldier or civilian-looking for knowledge that could prove to be the difference between life and death in a dangerous situation. 1000 black-and-white illustrations

Book excerpt: This range of theatre specific aircrew survival manuals follow on from the original book 'HEMS Helicopter Essentials', a survival manual that is totally different and hopefully like no other. In an ideal world, if you follow the first half of that manual, you should not need the second part. The aim of these smaller manuals is to alleviate the all too common 'generic survival skills' that are found in many textbooks. Each area of the planet is wonderful, but vastly different. As aircrew we can find ourselves over a multitude of environments during a routine flight, so rather than overload our knowledge if we keep to the basic principles of survival and a few basic regional specific items...Just the 'Essentials' that will keep you alive.
