Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediæval and Modern History, Vol. 1: The Middle Ages This book is a revision of the first half of my Medieval and Modem History the earliest impression of which was published sixteen years ago. It will be followed shortly by a companion volume entitled The Modern Age, which will contain the revised and extended text of the second half of the original work. In the present volume the general perspective of the earlier work has not been essentially modified; but the emphasis has in places been slightly shifted, and the narrative carefully revised, so that it should embody the latest positive results of those scholarly researches which during recent years have been so active and so fruitful in the field of mediaeval history. The principles governing the selection and presentation of historical facts have been the principles adopted in the writing of the Medieval and Modem History, Purely political, dynastic, and military matters have been kept in subordination to religious, moral, intellectual, and social interests. Unity has been impressed upon the narrative by keeping prominent the great ideals of the mediaeval time, especially the ideals of the Papacy and the Empire, and by laying upon the Renaissance, which is viewed as essentially an intellectual movement and as the unconscious goal of mediaeval endeavor and life, an emphasis corresponding to that laid upon the Reformation and the Political Revolution in modern history. Successive chapters examine the social and economic structure of a continent about to establish trade and colonies in the New World, the intellectual and artistic movements which made up the Renaissance, the position of the Church on the eve of the Reformation, the political inheritance of the Middle Ages, with its rising nation states, and the growth of the Ottoman Empire.

With the departure of imperial powers, the region must now, on its own, resolve the political, economic, cultural, and societal problems that prevent it from accomplishing the next stage in the advance of civilization. There is enough in the traditional culture of Islam on the one hand and the modern experience of the Muslim peoples on the other, he explains, to provide the basis for an advance toward freedom in the true sense of that word.

Book excerpt: The sixth volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the fourteenth century, a period dominated by plague, other natural disasters and war which brought to an end three centuries of economic growth and cultural expansion in Christian Europe, but one which also saw important developments in government, religious and intellectual life, and new cultural and artistic patterns. Part I sets the scene by discussion of general themes in the theory and practice of government, religion, social and economic history, and culture. Part II deals with the individual histories of the states of western Europe; Part III with that of the Church at the time of the Avignon papacy and the Great Schism; and Part IV with eastern and northern Europe, Byzantium and the early Ottomans, giving particular attention to the social and economic relations with westerners and those of other civilisations in the Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediaeval and Modern History The revised text of my Medieval and Modern History has already appeared in a two-volume edition under the titles of T lie Middle Ages and The Modern Age. It is here presented, somewhat abridged, in a single illustrated book designed as a companion volume to my revised Ancient History. The lists of books for further reading and study appended to the different chapters are in the main a selection from the fuller bibliographies of the earlier revised edition. The series of maps includes all the more important ones of that impression, besides fifteen new colored maps, eleven of which have been engraved expressly for the present work. The two entitled respectively The Danelaw and Angevin Dominions are taken by kind permission from Professor Edward P. Cheyney's A Short History of England, while Europe after 1815 and Europe at the Present Time are through like courtesy drawn from Professor James Harvey Robinson's An Introduction to the History of Western E rope. Book excerpt: This seventh volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the last century (interpreted broadly) of the traditional Western Middle Ages. It takes account of much new research and modern, interdisciplinary approaches to the study and writing of history to present a broad view of late medieval society across Europe. It deals with ideas about government, social and economic change and development, the world of the spirit, as well as the history of individual countries, in many of which the powers of central government were greatly extended.
