Download or read book World History and Geography written by California. Dept. of Education and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a response to teachers' requests for practical assistance in implementing California's history-social science framework. The document offers stimulating ideas to enrich the teaching of history and social science, enliven instruction for every student, focus on essential topics, and help make learning more memorable. Experiences and contributions of ethnic groups and women in history are integrated in this course model. The framework is divided into 11 units: (1) Connecting with Past Learnings: Uncovering the Remote Past; (2) Connecting with Past Learnings: the Fall of Rome; (3) Growth of Islam; (4) African States in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times; (5) Civilizations of the Americas; (6) China; (7) Japan; (8) Medieval Societies: Europe and Japan; (9) Europe During the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution; (10) Early Modern Europe: The Age of Exploration to the Enlightenment; and (11) Linking Past to Present. Six of the 11 units delineated in the framework's 7th grade course description are developed in these course models. All units follow the same format. Each begins with a rationale and overview. Ways are suggested for teachers to coordinate the model with the state-adopted textbook for 7th grade. A presentation of activities to introduce and continue the sample topic are suggested to encourage students to apply what they have studied through projects. Each unit ends with an extensive annotated list of sample resources. (DK)

Book Synopsis Roberto Rossellini's Rome Open City by : Sidney Gottlieb
Download or read book Roberto Rossellini's Rome Open City written by Sidney Gottlieb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-14 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roberto Rossellini's Rome Open City instantly, markedly, and permanently changed the landscape of film history. Made at the end of World War II, it has been credited with initiating a revolution in and reinvention of modern cinema, bold claims that are substantiated when its impact on how films are conceptualized, made, structured, theorized, circulated, and viewed is examined. This volume offers a fresh look at the production history of Rome Open City; some of its key images, and particularly its representation of the city and various types of women; its cinematic influences and affinities; the complexity of its political dimensions, including the film's vision of political struggle and the political uses to which the film was put; and the legacy of the film in public consciousness. It serves as a well illustrated, up to date, and accessible introduction to one of the major achievements of filmmaking.

Book Synopsis My Six Years with Gorbachev by : Anatoly C. Chernyaev
Download or read book My Six Years with Gorbachev written by Anatoly C. Chernyaev and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his own diary as well as secret documents and transcripts of high-level meetings, Anatoly Chernyaev recounts the drama that swept the Soviet Union between 1985 and 1991. As Gorbachev&’s chief foreign policy aide for most of that period, he played a central role in efforts to halt the arms race, discard a confrontational ideology, and open his country to the world. And as Gorbachev&’s confidant on many domestic issues as well, Chernyaev offers rare insights into the struggle over glasnost, the growth of separatism, and the rise of Boris Yeltsin. While admiring of perestroika&’s founder, Chernyaev is frank in faulting Gorbachev for his hesitancy in economic reforms, for his delay in decentralizing Union-republic ties, and above all for his misplaced faith in the reformability of the Communist Party. Altogether this book is essential reading for those interested in the Cold War&’s end, the USSR&’s collapse, and especially the role played by ideas, ambitions, and key personalities in these momentous events.

Book Synopsis The Franciscans and Art Patronage in Late Medieval Italy by : Louise Bourdua
Download or read book The Franciscans and Art Patronage in Late Medieval Italy written by Louise Bourdua and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louise Bourdua examines how Franciscan church decoration developed between 1250 and 1400 by focusing on three important churches. She argues that local Franciscan friars were more interested in their personal conception of artistic programs than following models of decoration issued officially from the mother church at Assisi. Lay patrons also had considerable input into the decoration programs. Bourdua demonstrates how archival documentation and art can be combined to extend our understanding of the Franciscan art programs.
