Unlike the short-term trading trends that are popular today, Phelps's highly logical, yet radical approach focuses on identifying compounding machines in public markets, buying their stocks, and holding these investments long term for at least ten years. In this indispensable guide, Phelps analyzes what made the big companies of his day so profitable for the diligent, long-term investor. You will learn how to identify and invest in profitable business models without visible growth ceilings that will quickly increase your earnings. Worth its weight in gold (and then some), 100 to 1 in the Stock Market illuminates the way to the path of long-term wealth for you and your heirs. With this classic, yet highly relevant approach, you will pick companies wisely and watch your investments soar! Thomas William Phelps (1902-1992) spent over 40 years in the investing world working as a private investor, columnist, analyst, and financial advisor. His illustrious investing career began just before the stock market crash in 1929 and lasted into the 1970s. In 1927, he began his career with The Wall Street Journal where he was a reporter, news editor, and chief. Beginning in 1936, he edited Barron's National Financial Weekly. From 1949 to 1960, he served as an assistant to the chairman and manager of the economics department at Socony Mobil Oil. Following this venture, he was a partner in the investment firm of Scudder, Stevens & Clark until his retirement in 1970. "One of the five greatest investment books you've never heard of" -- The Daily Reckoning "Of all the books on investing that I've read over the years, 100 to 1 in the stock market one was at once, the most pleasurable and most challenging to my own beliefs." -- Value Walk (ValueWalk.com) "For years we handed out copies of Mr. Phelps book as bonuses." -- Timothy Lutts, Cabot Investing Advice, one of the largest investment advisories and newsletters in the country since 1970

Book excerpt: Transform today's surplus of investment information into a high-level investment strategy In an investment climate characterized by rapidly increasing access to information, it has become a real problem to sort out the legitimate financial advice, grounded in traditional analysis, from the constant stream of useless information, or "noise." Such "noise", through technological advances such as the Internet, has become widespread. This overload of information is hurting investors, since it makes real analysis based on factual inference harder to come by. This book steers investors through the "noise" to show them where and how to find solid investment information. This step-by-step guide is based on a very popular presentation the author makes to new private clients at Merrill Lynch. Richard Bernstein (New York, NY) is First Vice President and Chief Quantitative Strategist at Merrill Lynch & Company. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, he worked for E. F. Hutton and Tucker Anthony. He has been voted to the Institutional Investor All-America Research Team in each of the last eight years, and has appeared on Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concentration of private power over media has been the subject of intense public debate around the world. Critics have long feared waves of mergers creating a handful of large media firms that would hold sway over public opinion and endanger democracy and innovation. But others believe with equal fervor that the Internet and deregulation have opened the media landscape significantly. How concentrated has the American information sector really become? What are the facts about American media ownership? In this contentious environment, Eli Noam provides a comprehensive and balanced survey of media concentration with a methodical, scientific approach. He assembles a wealth of data from the last 25 years about mass media such as radio, television, film, music, and print publishing, as well as the Internet, telecommunications, and media-related information technology. After examining 100 separate media and network industries in detail, Noam provides a powerful summary and analysis of concentration trends across industries and major media sectors. He also looks at local media power, vertical concentration, and the changing nature of media ownership through financial institutions and private equity. The results reveal a reality much more complex than the one painted by advocates on either side of the debate. They show a dynamic system that fluctuates around long-term concentration trends driven by changing economics and technology. Media Ownership and Concentration in America will be essential reading and a trove of information for scholars and students in media, telecommunications, IT, economics, and the history of business, as well as media industry professionals, business researchers, and policy makers around the world. Critics and defenders of media trends alike will find much that confirms and refutes their world view. But the next round of their debate will be shaped by the facts presented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Nofer examines whether and to what extent Social Media can be used to predict stock returns. Market-relevant information is available on various platforms on the Internet, which largely consist of user generated content. For instance, emotions can be extracted in order to identify the investors' risk appetite and in turn the willingness to invest in stocks. Discussion forums also provide an opportunity to identify opinions on certain companies. Taking Social Media platforms as examples, the author examines the forecasting quality of user generated content on the Internet.

Sample Book Insights: #1 Everyone invests. From the stockbroker on Wall Street to the assembly line worker who skips breakfast every Friday because he runs out of money before his next paycheck, everyone invests their time, effort, and attention in what they find important. #2 There are three main reasons people invest: to build wealth, to support a family, and to prepare for retirement. investors who are focused on building wealth tend to concentrate more on the near future, while those who are focused on supporting a family typically invest in order to accumulate enough wealth now to afford a house in a good school district. #3 Expecting too much from your investments can lead to disappointment. While large company stocks have averaged annual returns of 11. 8 percent over the last 87 years, stocks of small companies have delivered a 16. 5 percent average return. #4 The investment mantra is simple: risk and return are inversely proportional. The more risk you take, the greater your chance for a high return or a big loss.

Book excerpt: We assess the impact of media sentiment on international equity prices using more than 4.5 million Reuters articles published across the globe between 1991 and 2015. News sentiment robustly predicts daily returns in both advanced and emerging markets, even after controlling for known determinants of stock prices. But not all news-sentiment is alike. A local (country-specific) increase in news optimism (pessimism) predicts a small and transitory increase (decrease) in local returns. By contrast, changes in global news sentiment have a larger impact on equity returns around the world, which does not reverse in the short run. We also find evidence that news sentiment affects mainly foreign – rather than local – investors: although local news optimism attracts international equity flows for a few days, global news optimism generates a permanent foreign equity inflow. Our results confirm the value of media content in capturing investor sentiment.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was a quotation-board boy in a stock-brokerage office when I was 14. I was good at mental arithmetic, and I enjoyed posting the numbers on the big board in the customers’ room. I was interested in the behavior of prices, and I kept a record of my observations. #2 I first began to pay attention to the message of the tape when I was 14. I would write down the stock and the price on Monday, and remembering past performances, I would write down what the stock should do on Tuesday and Wednesday. #3 I was 15 when I had my first thousand dollars, made in the bucket shops. I was making a good living. I began in the smaller bucket shops, where the man who traded in twenty shares at a clip was suspected of being John W. Gates in disguise or J. P. Morgan traveling incognito. #4 I was a one-man business, and I kept my business to myself. I didn’t have a following. I kept my prices either going the way I wanted them to, or they went the other way, and nobody could stop them out of kindness to me.
