Download or read book Verticillium Wilts written by G. F. Pegg and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Verticillium Nees represents one of the world's major fungal pathogens, affecting crop plants mostly in the cool and warm temperate regions, it also occurs in sub-tropical and tropical areas. There are some six species which cause severe wilting in trees, herbaceous plants and plantation crops. Other species are responsible for non-wilt diseases of banana and mushroom, another species infects insects. The monograph provides a comprehensive reference source on Verticillium, enabling research workers to see what has already been achieved and to identify the many new areas of research in which original contributions could be made to further the understanding and control of this important pathogen and the disease it causes.
Book Synopsis Carabid Beetles: Ecology and Evolution by : K. Desender
Download or read book Carabid Beetles: Ecology and Evolution written by K. Desender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carabidae form one of the largest and best studied families of insects, occurring in nearly every terrestrial habitat. The contributions included in this book cover a broad spectrum of recent research into this beetle family, with an emphasis on various aspects of ecology and evolution. They deal both with individual carabid species, for example in studies on population and reproductive biology or life history in general, and with ground beetle communities, as exemplified in papers treating assemblages in natural habitats, on agricultural land and in forests. Disciplines range from biogeography and faunistics, over morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, ecophysiology and functional ecology, to population, community, conservation and landscape ecology. This volume is the result of the 8th European Carabidologists' Meeting, 2nd International Symposium of Carabidology, September 1-4, 1992, Belgium.

Book Synopsis Mites of Greenhouses by : Zhi-Qiang Zhang
Download or read book Mites of Greenhouses written by Zhi-Qiang Zhang and published by CABI. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mites are among the most important arthropods in greenhouses, both as pests causing economic injury to greenhouse crops, and as natural enemies used in the biological control of pest insects and other mites. Because of their minute size, mites are much less well known than insects. This book describes the biology, identification and control of such mites and the topics covered include an introduction to the Acari, illustrated keys to orders, families and selected species, the control of pest mites, and the role of beneficial mites in biological control. The book will be of interest to those working in entomology, crop protection and horticulture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains full descriptions of all the ring nematodes (484 species) reported from everywhere in the world that belong to the family Criconematidae, order Tylenchida. They are plant parasites living in het soil and so they have an economic importance. This book is amply illustrated with line drawings and SEM photographs that are based on microscopic and sub-microscopic observations. AUTHOR: Etienne Geraert was Zoology Professor at Ghent University, Belgium. From 1974 till 1998 he was also Associate Editor of the International Journal Nematologica (now Nematology) where he was responsible for the articles on morphology and taxonomy. He has already published a book on the morphology of the order Tylenchida and four books on the identification of plant-parasitic nematodes of the families Tylenchidae, Criconematidae, Dolichodoridae and Pratylenchidae. From 1990 till 2002 he was Director of the Master's Course in Nematology at Ghent University. 406 b/w images

Download or read book The Oat Crop written by R.W. Welch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Samuel Johnson, that famous eighteenth century lexicographer, said of oats 'A grain which in England is generally given to horses but in Scotland supports the people'. And presumably it was a Scotsman who riposted 'But what people and what horses!' That exchange encapsulates much of the history and role of oats - a cereal, once important as human food in parts of northern Europe but latterly used mainly as animal feed, especially favoured for horses. Although no longer a major food anywhere, oats still have a special and favoured niche in the cuisine of people living in the cooler and wetter regions of some parts of northern Europe. However, there is currently a resurgence of interest in the crop, because there is now considerable scientific evidence to support the view of Scotsmen who never doubted its dietary value. This book - very much an international effort, carefully orchestrated by Robert Welch - traces the origin, history and scientific progress which forms a sound basis for any further crop improvement and for broadening the utilization and marketing of oat products. Should rational consider ations lead to an increase in the importance of this cereal, I, for one, would be glad since I believe the rural landscape is the poorer for the increased rarity of golden fields of rippling oats which I used to be involved in harvesting.
Book Synopsis Fungicide Resistance in Crop Protection by : Tarlochan S. Thind
Download or read book Fungicide Resistance in Crop Protection written by Tarlochan S. Thind and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 296 pages. Worldwide, resistance to more than one hundred different active ingredients has been reported. This book compiles information on fungicide resistance over the past three decades on the status, development, and processes involved in the build-up of resistance in pathogens to different groups of fungicides, while also suggesting various measures for managing this problem.
