Book excerpt: We find that the dominant mode of decadal air-sea CO2 flux variability exhibits strong synchronous signals over the tropical Pacific and Southern Ocean. We suggest that the synchronicity between the tropical Pacific and the Southern Ocean is modulated by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index, which is connected to the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI). The composite patterns over the tropical Pacific can be explained by ENSO-like mechanisms operating on the decadal timescale, while the composite patterns over the Southern Ocean show a different regime where the westerly winds weakened over the composite period, the mixed layer shoaled, and the Southern Ocean sink weakened. Using a box model, we show that this reduction in mixed layer entrainment drives an accumulation of DIC in the mixed layer, which, when amplified by the high Revelle factor in the Southern Ocean, results in a 14-fold amplification in the surface pCO2, reducing the ocean's capacity to uptake CO2.

The vastness of the open ocean and the large variability in the coastal ocean provide obstacles to accurately quantify storage and transport of inorganic carbon within marine ecosystems and between marine and other earth systems. Thus far, the open ocean has been the only true net sink of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (Canthro) emissions. However, ocean storage of Canthro is not uniformly distributed. Changes in water chemistry in the Northeast Pacific were quantified to estimate the amount of Canthro stored in this region over the last decade. This additional Canthro was found to cause acidification and aragonite saturation horizon shoaling at rates towards the higher end of those found in Pacific and Atlantic Ocean basins, making the Northeast Pacific one of the most sensitive regions to the invasion of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Due to large variability in biogeochemical signals in coastal oceans, it is challenging to accurately assess carbon fluxes across different boundaries, such as tidal exchange between coastal wetlands and coastal oceans. Coastal salt marshes have been suggested to be a large net CO2 sink, thus designated as a type of "blue carbon." However, accurate and dynamic estimates of carbon fluxes to and from tidal marshes are still premature, particularly carbon fluxes from marshes to the coastal ocean via tidal exchange, often referred to as marsh lateral fluxes. In this thesis, lateral total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) export fluxes were realistically quantified using high frequency time-series, in situ data. High-resolution fluxes permitted a closer look at how marsh generated TA and DIC are being exported over diurnal, spring-neap, and seasonal scales. I investigated the best way to capture variability of marsh exports via traditional bottle sampling and assessed uncertainties associated with different sampling strategies. Marsh TA and DIC exports significantly modified buffering capacity of coastal waters. This work contains the first realistic estimate of TA exports from a tidal salt marsh. Accurate estimates of DIC and TA fluxes indicate the significance of salt marshes to the coastal carbon and alkalinity budgets.

Book excerpt: The exchange of mass and energy between the atmosphere and the surface below it is not well understood in shallow coastal ecosystems. This thesis addresses those exchanges in an intertidal salt marsh and a shallow embayment. Additionally, the effect of light scattering on albedo is studied with a radiative transfer model for test cases representing a wide range of coastal systems. Over the marsh, the observed fluxes depend on the timing of both solar noon and tidal inundation. A carbon dioxide flux model incorporating these factors is developed and used to estimate the net vertical seasonal carbon exchange for the marsh system. In the coastal embayment, the observed momentum and heat fluxes are compared to estimates generated by existing parameterizations. The COARE 3.5 bulk flux algorithm underestimates the observed wind stress, but estimates observed values well after a simple modification to the roughness length parameterization. Unexpectedly, the buoyancy flux estimated by COARE 3.5 is in good agreement with observations. The radiative transfer model indicates a commonly used open-ocean parameterization of albedo provides a reasonable estimate of net shortwave heat flux in most shallow coastal waters with depths > 1 m. The exceptions are environments with bright sand bottoms or highly turbid water. Guidance is provided to researchers who need to determine albedo in highly reflective or highly turbid conditions but have no direct observations. This thesis illustrates the potential consequences of using parameterizations developed in non-coastal environments, and provides examples of how to modify the parameterizations for successful use in shallow ecosystems.

Book excerpt: The flux of CO2 between the ocean and the atmosphere is an important measure in determining local, global, and regional, as well as short term and long term carbon budgets. In this study, air-sea CO2 fluxes measured using a floating chamber were used to examine the spatial and temporal variability of CO2 fluxes in Florida Bay. Measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity obtained concurrently with chamber measurements of CO2 flux allowed calculation of [Delta]pCO2 from flux measurements obtained at zero wind velocity. Floating chamber measurements of [Delta]pCO2 were subsequently coupled with wind speed data to provide a simple yet reliable means of predicting absolute flux values. Florida Bay is a marine-dominated, sub-tropical estuary located at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula. Spatial variability within the bay reveals four distinct regions that appear to be affected by a variety of physical, chemical and biological processes. In the eastern part of the bay, the waters tend to be oversaturated with respect to CO2, likely due to the input of freshwater from Taylor Slough. The central portion of the bay is characterized by a number of extremely shallow semi-isolated basins with limited exchange with the rest of the bay. This area is typically undersaturated with respect to CO2 and provides a sink for atmospheric CO2. Both the northern and southern regions were highly variable both spatially and temporally.

Among its challenges, assessing carbon fluxes over the Arctic Ocean remains an arduous task, due to its remoteness and difficulty to observe. While the global oceans take up carbon in the net, the Arctic Ocean has been found to be regionally variable in both flux sign and magnitude. Coupled with a warming climate and declining sea ice, future projections of the Arctic carbon budget are highly uncertain. As the Arctic climate rapidly warms, there is a critical need for understanding its observed changes and variability, but a lack of long-term observations has historically hindered progress. This work analyzes measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) mixing ratios from an 8-year dataset of measurements obtained over Arctic sea ice (the O-Buoy Network; 2009-2016). These observations, along with measurements from coastal observatories, were analyzed and interpreted with an atmospheric chemical transport model. This model reproduced the observed features of the seasonal cycle and shows that terrestrial biosphere fluxes and synoptic transport explain most CO2 variability over the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Interannually, the coastal observations were more comparable in overall CO2 growth than concurrent measurements over sea ice. Evidence indicating the presence of ocean gas exchange in and around sea ice during periods where this growth discrepancy occurs is discussed. In addition, a Lagrangian trajectory model and airmass contact tracers were used to gain insight into upwind source and sink regions of CO2 residuals over Utqiagvik, Alaska, and O-Buoys within the Beaufort Gyre during distinct periods based on the mean seasonal cycle of CO2. It was found that the terrestrial Arctic-boreal zone did not provide the carbon emissions expected for the large CO2 residual events. Finally, the O-Buoy observations are assimilated into an atmospheric inversion, along with additional datasets of satellite and surface observations. The inversions demonstrated the value of incorporating O-Buoy observations, which helped to constrain scaling factors for ocean and land fluxes over the northern high latitudes. Overall, this work highlights the importance of obtaining continuous observations over the Arctic and Arctic Ocean during this era of rapid biogeochemical change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon is a fundamental component of all life and its gaseous form, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important atmospheric regulator of Earth’s climate. Over societally relevant timescales, diverse physical, biological, and chemical processes in the global ocean have a very important role in controlling the exchanges of CO2 with the atmosphere and climate, given that the ocean contains roughly 60 times more carbon than the atmosphere. The complex and dynamic marine carbon cycle is thus a fundamental part and regulator of life on Earth, requiring monitoring of its variability and understanding of the feedbacks to the climate system. This is particularly relevant given that emissions of human produced (anthropogenic) CO2 through fossil fuel and land use changes have led to significant perturbations in the global carbon cycle. A large fraction of emitted anthropogenic carbon (Cant) has been and will be absorbed by the oceans with implications for seawater chemistry, ocean pH levels, and the biological communities contained within. During the last few decades, quantification of the ocean sink of CO2 and its temporal evolution of the marine carbon cycle has been an important driver of marine biogeochemical research. Scientific expeditions such as the World Ocean Circulation Experiment/Joint Global Ocean Flux Study global surveys conducted during the 1990s provided the data for the first global estimates of the uptake and oceanic sink of Cant. More recently, completion of a second global survey of the marine carbon cycle (from 2000 to 2013) provided sufficient data to assess the rate of uptake and storage of Cant within the interior of the global ocean. From this effort, it has become clear that there is substantial regional and temporal variability of the storage rate of Cant and those physico-biogeochemical processes that influence the marine carbon cycle. Here we review seawater carbonate chemistry, the sampling strategies, and networks required to observe variability in the global ocean carbon cycle and the flux of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere but with a central focus, synthesizing and summarizing available estimates of the ocean uptake and inventories of Cant. This chapter is aimed at a wider audience within the oceanographic community and points to the rich literature on marine carbon cycle research.
