Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress by : George P. Chrousos
Download or read book Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress written by George P. Chrousos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been over 50 years since Hans Selye formulated his concept of stress. This came after the isolation of epinephrine and norepinephrine and after the sympathetic system was associated with Walter Cannon's "fight or flight" response. The intervening years have witnessed a number of dis coveries that have furthered our understanding of the mechanisms of the stress response. The isolation, identification and manufacture of gluco corticoids, the identification and synthesis of ACTH and vasopressin, and the demonstration of hypothalamic regulation of ACTH secretion were pivotal discoveries. The recent identification and synthesis of CRR by Willie Vale and his colleagues gave new impetus to stress research. Several new concepts of stress have developed as a result of advances in bench research. These include the concept of an integrated "stress sys tem", the realization that there are bi-directional effects between stress and the immune system, the suggestion that a number of common psychiatric disorders represent dysregulation of systems responding to stress, and the epidemiologic association of stress with the major scourges of humanity.

Book Synopsis Cardiovascular Neuromodulation: Mechanisms and therapies by : Marianna Meo
Download or read book Cardiovascular Neuromodulation: Mechanisms and therapies written by Marianna Meo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachyarrhythmias/fibrillation (VT/VF) and heart failure. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death -globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year ( 31 % of all deaths worldwide ). Mechanisms implicated in the pathophysiology of CVD include autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction , vasoconstriction, and systemic inflammation. Today, several therapeutic options are available to treat heart and cardiovascular patients, mainly medical therapies targeting specific pathways in vascular biology and physiology, centered around vasoconstriction, cell proliferation, sympathetic overactivity, defective renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and ANS imbalance. Those drugs have improved the quality of life and survival of patients. On the other hand, they do not cure the disease and are associated with side effects like dry cough, flushing, peripheral edema, hyperkalemia, hypotension, and reduction of cardiac output. Despite significant advances, CVDs remain a serious, life-threatening condition and new therapeutic modalities must be pursued. Neuromodulation therapies, which is one of the upsurging fields of modern medicine, involving a wide range of specialties and a variety of disorders. It is the process of stimulation, inhibition, regulation, or therapeutic alterations of the electrical or/and chemical activities, in the central, peripheral, or autonomic nervous systems that can be directed toward reverse/prevent progression of cardiovascular disease, by using implantable or non-implantable medical devices such as pacemakers, neural stimulators or micro-infusion pumps.

Book Synopsis Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology, With Labs by : Terry J. Housh
Download or read book Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology, With Labs written by Terry J. Housh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Exercise & Sport Physiology, Fourth Edition, presents theory and application in an appealing, balanced, and manageable format. By providing an essential introduction to the systems of the human body and covering important aspects of exercise and sport physiology, it will be a useful resource for students as they learn to become exercise science professionals, physician's assistants, physical therapists, physical educators, or coaches. It provides the right amount of practical information they will need to apply in hospitals, clinics, schools, and settings such as health clubs, youth sport leagues, and similar environments. The authors have carefully designed the material to be covered easily in one semester, in an introductory course, but the book can also serve as a foundation for advanced courses. Its 18 lab experiences are matched to relevant chapters and complement the topics covered; they allow readers to apply physiological principles to exercise and sport, provide opportunities for hands-on learning and application of the scientific principles, and often don't require complex equipment.
