Book excerpt: The effects of processing (e.g., HIP, CIP+Upset, Extrusion) and reinforcement size/ volume fraction on the mechanical behavior of 6061B Aluminum/SiCp composites were determined at room temperature. Materials sold under the brand names SupremEX 620XF (6061B/SiCp/20%/0.7μm) and 640XA (6061B/SiCp/40%/3μm) were provided by collaborators at Materion Brush Incorporated. Mechanical performance was evaluated by uniaxial tension testing and compared to 6061 T6. Stiffness was not dependent upon processing conditions, and increased from 67 GPa to 94 GPa (40%) and 135 GPa (101%) for SupremEX 620XF and 640XA. Strength and ductility were found to be greatly dependent upon processing conditions. Yield strength increased from 276 MPa to 338-413 MPa (+22-50%) and 420-506 MPa (+52-83%). Ultimate tensile strength increased from 310 MPa to 399-481 MPa (+28-55%) and 450-531 MPa (+45-71%), while strain at failure was reduced from 17% to 3.1-8.5% (-50-82%) and 0.2-4.2% (-75-99%). XRD, metallography, and SEM fracture surface analysis supplemented these findings.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermomechanical processing was conducted on cast 6061 Al-A12O3 metal matrix composites (MMCs) containing either 10 or 20 volume percent of alumina (A1203) particles. These materials were provided by DURALCAN-USA, Inc., of San Diego, CA in conjunction with a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) program on ductility enhancement for these MMCS. Processing included isothermal forging and rolling of materials at 500 deg C, with interpass anneal (IPA) times of 5 or 30 minutes. Isothermal rolling was also accomplished on 1.0 inch thick 6061-T6 Al plate. Processed materials were solution heat treated at temperatures ranging from 480-560 deg C, and were then age hardened at 160 deg C. Tensile testing was conducted to evaluate strength and ductility. Homogeneity of the particle distribution was improved by processing for both composites and no microstructural damage was apparent. Lower solution heat treatment temperature provided significant ductility enhancement while the longer IPA time at 500 deg C had a minor beneficial effect. As the percentage of reinforcement increased, aging time to peak strength decreased; peak strength, and yield strength increased; and ductility decreased. As the solution heat treatment temperature was decreased ductility was enhanced at a cost of peak strength.

Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of 6061 aluminum reinforced with fibers of stainless steel, 34 v/o SiC, 27 v/o boron and 45 v/o boron cross-plied 0/90 degrees, were determined in the as-received condition and after thermal fatigue. The properties investigated included longitudinal and transverse strength and modulus, major and minor Poisson's ratio, the density and the fracture toughness. It was concluded that the nature of the damage produced by exposing these materials to cyclic temperature variations consisted of voids and cracks that were solely connected with the matrix or matrix-fiber bond.

Book excerpt: This book describes the latest efforts to develop aluminum nanocomposites with enhanced damping and mechanical properties and good workability. The nanocomposites exhibited high strength, improved damping behavior and good ductility, making them suitable for use as wires. Since the production of metal matrix nanocomposites by conventional melting processes is considered extremely problematic (because of the poor wettability of the nanoparticles), different powder metallurgy routes were investigated, including high-energy ball milling and unconventional compaction methods. Special attention was paid to the structural characterization at the micro- and nanoscale, as uniform nanoparticle dispersion in metal matrix is of prime importance. The aluminum nanocomposites displayed an ultrafine microstructure reinforced with alumina nanoparticles produced in situ or added ex situ. The physical, mechanical and functional characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated using different mechanical tests and microstructure investigation techniques. The book presents and discusses the experimental results in detail, and offers suggestions for future research directions.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of nanocarbon-infused materials, termed covetics, has been developed by Third Millennium Materials, LLC. In this paper we have evaluated the enhanced performance prospects for strength and electrical conductivity of a nanocarbon infused 6061 aluminum composite by comparing properties to those of 6061 aluminum. Unlike most metal matrix carbon composites, this material is unique in that the nanocarbon is so strongly bound to the metal that it is stable in the molten state. The proprietary manufacturing process is still in the early stages of development, and we had an opportunity to evaluate a limited amount of extruded 6061 aluminum covetic sample material. This paper examines the effects of covetic processing on the physical, electrical, and mechanical properties of 6061 aluminum using chemical, optical, and scanning electron microscopy, density measurement, microindentation hardness testing, electrical conductivity measurement, quasi-static tensile testing, and high strain-rate compression (Hopkinson bar) testing. In the as-extruded condition (warm worked at 227°C) the results show that the nanocarbon provides approximately a 30 % improvement in yield strength compared to baseline 6061-T0. This could be explained using electron microscopy observations which showed that the covetic 6061 was more resistant to grain growth and coarsening during extrusion. High strain rate, Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) tests revealed an opposite trend-the as-extruded covetic material exhibited lower stresses at equivalent strains. However, 6061 aluminum is not normally processed in the low strength as-extruded condition, so the covetic material was heat treated to the T6 condition. In the T6 condition, the strength and ductility of 6061 with and without 3 wt. % nanocarbon were approximately equal at all strain rates. Whereas the nanoscale carbon increased the electrical conductivity of 6061 by 43 % in the as-extruded condition, the conductivity only improved 15 %-19 % in the T6 condition. The nanocarbon/aluminum composite displays potential as an improved strength aluminum alloy with much higher electrical conductivity than is typical for other aluminum alloys and aluminum matrix composites. This study identified a clear need for standards development for the chemical analysis of nanocarbon in covetic materials.
