Book excerpt: Test techniques were developed for the determination of short-transverse tensile properties, Poisson's ratios, and shear moduli in anisotropic sheet. Cross-rolled 0.077-in. thick S-200 Beryllium sheet was tested to determine Young's moduli, Poisson's ratios, shear moduli, uniaxial tensile properties in three directions, biaxial tensile properties, three- and four-pint bend characteristics, fracture toughness, effect of anisotropy on fatigue strength, microstructural characteristics, basal and prism pole figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In EN 789 test methods for determining some mechanical properties of wood-based panels are specified. The standard is primarily intended for products for use in load-bearing timber structures. A method for the panel shear properties is included in the standard, but due to limited experience, this method has been placed in an annex. The purpose of the present project was to study the panel shear test method in EN 789 for materials other than plywood, wafer board and OSB and, if necessary, to suggest modifications to the method. Introductory tests with EN 789 showed that panels with a comparatively low tensile / panel shear strength ratio will tend to fail in tension at the end of the specimen in the panel close to the rails. Thin panels buckled before the panel shear strength level was reached. Based on the results from the introductory tests and from a finite element analysis, a new specimen and a new test rig was designed. The main changes were: a reduction of specimen size; the load was applied in the main direction of the specimen; the supports were oriented in order that they did not induce large tensile stresses in the specimen. The following conclusions can be drawn from tests and calculations of the modified method: The modified EN 789 gives better defined shear failures in the specimens, especially for MDF and particle board; buckling still occurs when thin panels are tested; the shear stress in both the EN 789 specimen and in the modified EN 789 specimen is about 20 % higher than the mean shear stress. This means that the shear modulus is underestimated by the same extent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides an overview on wood science and technology of unparalleled comprehensiveness and international validity. It describes the fundamental wood biology, chemistry and physics, as well as structure-property relations of wood and wood-based materials. The different aspects and steps of wood processing are presented in detail from both a fundamental technological perspective and their realisation in industrial contexts. The discussed industrial processes extend beyond sawmilling and the manufacturing of adhesively bonded wood products to the processing of the various wood-based materials, including pulp and paper, natural fibre materials and aspects of bio-refinery. Core concepts of wood applications, quality and life cycle assessment of this important natural resource are presented. The book concludes with a useful compilation of fundamental material parameters and data as well as a glossary of terms in accordance with the most important industry standards. Written and edited by a truly international team of experts from academia, research institutes and industry, thoroughly reviewed by external colleagues, this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands, as well as providing a summary of state-of-the-art research trends and industrial requirements. It is an invaluable resource for all professionals in research and development, and engineers in practise in the field of wood science and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic textbook on comparative biomechanics—revised and expanded Why do you switch from walking to running at a specific speed? Why do tall trees rarely blow over in high winds? And why does a spore ejected into air at seventy miles per hour travel only a fraction of an inch? Comparative Biomechanics is the first and only textbook that takes a comprehensive look at the mechanical aspects of life—covering animals and plants, structure and movement, and solids and fluids. An ideal entry point into the ways living creatures interact with their immediate physical world, this revised and updated edition examines how the forms and activities of animals and plants reflect the materials available to nature, considers rules for fluid flow and structural design, and explores how organisms contend with environmental forces. Drawing on physics and mechanical engineering, Steven Vogel looks at how animals swim and fly, modes of terrestrial locomotion, organism responses to winds and water currents, circulatory and suspension-feeding systems, and the relationship between size and mechanical design. He also investigates links between the properties of biological materials—such as spider silk, jellyfish jelly, and muscle—and their structural and functional roles. Early chapters and appendices introduce relevant physical variables for quantification, and problem sets are provided at the end of each chapter. Comparative Biomechanics is useful for physical scientists and engineers seeking a guide to state-of-the-art biomechanics. For a wider audience, the textbook establishes the basic biological context for applied areas—including ergonomics, orthopedics, mechanical prosthetics, kinesiology, sports medicine, and biomimetics—and provides materials for exhibit designers at science museums. Problem sets at the ends of chapters Appendices cover basic background information Updated and expanded documentation and materials Revised figures and text Increased coverage of friction, viscoelastic materials, surface tension, diverse modes of locomotion, and biomimetics

Book excerpt: Wood Fracture Characterization provides a guide to the application of modern fracture mechanics concepts to wood materials used in structural engineering, which commonly involve discontinuities and irregularities. The authors cover the tests, data reduction schemes and numerical methods devised for wood structural applications, based on cohesive zone analysis, and used to validate experimental-based methodologies. Five detailed Case Studies are included to link theory with engineering practice. This important new text explains the basics of fracture mechanics, and extends them as needed to cover the special behaviour of an anisotropic wood materials.
