Book excerpt: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) ratings of Draw a Person Picking an Apple from a Tree" (PPAT) drawings to assess for depression in chronic mental patients recovering in a social rehabilitation clubhouse setting. Thirty participants (n=15 male and n=15 female) were recruited on a voluntary basis to participate in this study. The FEATS ratings were compared to results of the Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). It was hypothesized that the art assessment technique (PPAT) rated with the FEATS would be as effective as the widely used and reliable assessment scale (BDI-II) in determining a participant's level of depression. Results did not support the hypothesis in that correlations between the FEATS and the BDI-II are weak and mostly positive.

Book excerpt: This investigative study examined the relationship between anxiety in middle school children and Draw-A-Story (DAS) drawings, utilizing Silver's Draw-A-Story Form B stimulus drawings. Participants included forty-nine students (23 boys and 26 girls) from a small, private school located in Northwestern Connecticut. Participants were asked to draw a picture utilizing two of the stimulus drawings and to title the drawing. It was hypothesized that the Emotional Content Scale-Revised (ECS-R), a rating scale for the DAS (revised to include three additional yes-no questions concerning anxiety) would correlate with a self-report inventory, the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED). It was hypothesized that low (or negative) scores on the ECS-R would correlate with high scores (equal to or above 25) on the SCARED, which indicate the potential for an anxiety disorder. The hypothesis was not supported; there were no correlations between the SCARED and the DAS. The lack of significant findings suggest that DAS may not be a reliable indicator of anxiety.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the construct validity of separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in a sample of clinically anxious children. Participants were 572 children, 6 to 17 years old (294 boys) who consented to participate in anxiety assessment and treatment. Data for 85% of the sample came from a federally-funded, multi-site RCT. The remaining 15% came from an intervention enhancement study conducted at a mental health clinic associated with a large public university. Clinician ratings of child anxiety were obtained from the Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale (PARS) and the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children and Parents (ADIS: C/P). Parent and child ratings of symptom severity were examined using the Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorders (SCARED) and the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). Discriminant and convergent validity were assessed using confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) techniques to test a multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) model. CFA analyses of the data supported the conceptualization of child anxiety as three separate traits. Separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, and GAD can be reliably differentiated in children. Discriminant validity of traits was supported because the three anxiety disorders showed meaningful divergence in the data by trait. Convergent validity of traits was also supported because the three-trait model fit the data considerably better than a no-trait model. Further, evidence for discriminant validity of methods showed that each informant provided unique information about anxiety symptoms. The best model fit was obtained for a subsample of 314 children younger than age 11. A review of factor-loadings for this model showed that separation anxiety and GAD were best measured by parent reports, and the clinician report had the strongest influence on social phobia. Specifically, each of three subscales of the SCARED-P and the ADIS: C/P for social phobia proved to be the most informative evaluation tools. As a result of this analysis, clinicians may be more confident that the current classification system of anxiety disorders is accurate and that discordant informant reports encountered in practice are more a reflection of unique perspective than of poor construct validity.

Abstract: Introduction: This study was designed to validate the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorder-Revised (SCARED-R) for use in the local context. Furthermore, different components of anxiety-related attentional bias were studied with emotional spatial cueing task (ESCT). This study also attempted to investigate the relationship among attentional bias, temperamental traits of Negative Affectivity (NA) and Effortful Control (EC), and anxiety. Method: Subjects were recruited from P.4 to F.3 students of mainstream Chinese speaking schools. The SCARED-R and self-report measures of NA and EC were administered. 508 child/adolescent subjects (mean age=11.7 years, SD=1.80; 327 boys and 181 girls) and 312 of their parents (child's mean age=11.50; SD=1.77; 196 boys and 116 girls) were included in the analysis. In Stage 2 of the study, subjects were recruited from those with SCARED-R scores at 85th percentile or above and 50th percentile or below. 34 pairs of child/adolescent and parent subjects (mean age=11.89 years; SD=1.90) were assessed with the Chinese version of the Diagnostic Interview for Children-Version 4, with which the Anxiety group (n=14) and Control group (n=20) were identified. All subjects completed the SCARED-R and Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS). The child/adolescent subjects did ESCT, which presented Angry, happy and neutral faces for 17 ms, 500 ms and 1250 ms. Results: The mean total SCARED-R scores were 31.94 (SD=19.51) and 22.96 (SD=15.35) for child/adolescent and parent subjects. Internal consistencies (Cronbach's α=.95 and .94) and one-month test-retest reliability (Spearman's rho=.72 and .79, both at pFacilitated attentional bias and disengagement difficulties were not related as predicted. Angry cues induced greater disengagement difficulties than happy cues. Compared with Control group, Anxiety group showed greater disengagement difficulties when Angry cues were presented at cue duration of 1250 ms. A direct and significant relationship existed between anxiety with NA, and between anxiety and EC. NA and EC played their own unique roles in affecting anxiety but the variance accounted by EC in addition to NA was small. EC did not moderate the relationship between NA and anxiety, though a very small mediating effect between NA and anxiety was noted. Conclusion: This study provides support for the satisfactory psychometric properties of the SCARED-R for local use, showing its good potential of being used as a screening instrument for anxiety disorders. Despite the small sample size, anxious children/adolescents were found to have disengagement difficulties from threat cue at cue duration of 1250 ms, and this could be a parameter to consider in future design of attentional bias modification training. The major limitation of this study is its convenience sampling of subjects from community and the low participation/consent

As such, the primary purpose of this dissertation was to develop a brief self-report anxiety measure appropriate for use with students in Grades 3-8. An initial pool of 50 items was developed based on DSM-5 and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria, reviews of existing anxiety measures, and expert feedback. These items were piloted with 92 students in a rural school district. The first round of analyses focused on the item reduction and item analyses of the measure using an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) approach. Based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 of the 50 items were selected to be entered into the EFA. As a result, a two-factor model with 13 items was supported by the data, and the items loading on the two factors were meaningful in content. The first factor focused on general anxiety experienced within the school environment while the second factor focused on anxiety experienced specific to evaluative situations and performance within the school setting. After the item reduction, data were evaluated for internal consistency and convergent validity of the final scale. Overall, internal consistency was good with Cronbach alpha values > .80 for the two subscales and the EASY Total score. Correlations between EASY scores and scores from the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED; Birmaher et al., 1999) were mostly in the low range. Correlations with parent report of students anxiety were also low. Overall, support for a two-factor model with meaningful scales was found that provides a basis for an adequate screening measure. Future research should focus on item revision given the different symptomatology and developmental levels in children.

Book excerpt: Although generally considered adult disorders, anxiety and depression are widespread among children and adolescents, affecting academic performance, social development, and long-term outcomes. They are also difficult to treat and, especially when they occur in tandem, tend to fly under the diagnostic radar. Anxiety and Depression in Children and Adolescents offers a developmental psychology perspective for understanding and treating these complex disorders as they manifest in young people. Adding the school environment to well-known developmental contexts such as biology, genetics, social structures, and family, this significant volume provides a rich foundation for study and practice by analyzing the progression of pathology and the critical role of emotion regulation in anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and in combination. Accurate diagnostic techniques, appropriate intervention methods, and empirically sound prevention strategies are given accessible, clinically relevant coverage. Illustrative case examples and an appendix of forms and checklists help make the book especially useful. Featured in the text: Developmental psychopathology of anxiety, anxiety disorders, depression, and mood disorders. Differential diagnosis of the anxiety and depressive disorders. Assessment measures for specific conditions. Age-appropriate interventions for anxiety and depression, including CBT and pharmacotherapy. Multitier school-based intervention and community programs. Building resilience through prevention. Anxiety and Depression in Children and Adolescents is an essential reference for practitioners, researchers, and graduate students in school and clinical child psychology, mental health and school counseling, family therapy, psychiatry, social work, and education.

Book excerpt: Effective interventions, such as art therapy, can provide an outlet for stress reduction for a wide variety of individuals experiencing different types of stress. The purpose of the present study was to determine if stress could be reduced in a sample of 30 middle school teachers using a pre-post control group design that measured change in stress levels between two groups using the Psychological Stress Measure Revised (PSM-9) (Lemyre, L., & Lalande-Markon, M., 2009). Participants were assigned randomly to one of two groups. One group participated in an art-making activity intended to reduce stress, while the other group (control group) engaged in a puzzle-making activity. Results showed that the art-making intervention group experienced a larger decrease in stress scores than the control group. Therefore one can conclude that art making is a more effective intervention for stress reduction among middle school teachers than a non-artistic task.
