Book excerpt: Abstract: Previous research has consistently documented a positive relationship between religion and marital satisfaction. However, these studies often relied upon one construct of religion. Using data from the Marriage and Relationship Study (MARS), a nationally representative dataset of middle to low income couples, this study performs OLS regression analysis to investigate the effects of three constructs of religiosity--personal religious experience, religious homogamy, and joint religious activity--on marital satisfaction to determine which of these measures best accounts for marital satisfaction. The results reveal that joint religious activity is the only significant indicator of marital satisfaction, suggesting that the integrative properties of religion matter most for marital satisfaction. In other words, religion has the greatest positive impact on marriage when a couple practices their faith together. Future research should continue using measures of religion that tap into the integration of religion into marriage when studying the relationship between religion and marital quality.

Religiosity was measured using two methods: monthly church attendance and The Shepherd Scale (Bassett et al., 1981). Participants consisted of at 158 married individuals selected from four Christian churches in Burlington County, New Jersey. Results confirm that a relationship exists between Christian religious beliefs and marital satisfaction: a person who has strong, conservative Christian beliefs also has high marital satisfaction. Results also show a correlation between a single-item subjective measure of marital satisfaction and the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised Edition (Snyder, 1997). Beliefs and practices of the Christian faith did not better predict marital satisfaction than attendance at religious functions. Religious beliefs, religious behaviors, or number of times at church each month did not predict marital satisfaction when the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised Edition (Snyder, 1997) was used to assess marital satisfaction but religious behavior predicted marital satisfaction when a single-item, subjective measure of marital satisfaction was used instead. A final finding revealed that personal prayer and time spent in joint prayer are able to predict marital satisfaction regardless of the method used to assess marital satisfaction.

The absence of marital satisfaction can lead to poor health, relational stress, and, eventually, divorce. This predictive, correlational study sought to research the relationship between the adoption of a position of rightness, the practice of extrinsic religiosity, and how these factors influence the levels of marital satisfaction among Christian spouses in the United States of America. The researcher used the Brief Version of the Religious Orientation Scale- Revised (ROS-R) to assess the level of intrinsic and extrinsic religious activity of the sample population. To measure the independent variable of their adherence to relational rightness, the researcher used the Revised Sense of Relational Entitlement the community (SRE-R). For the dependent variable of marital satisfaction, the researcher used the Locke-Wallace Marital Assessment Test (LWMAT). Three findings emerged from the study with practical implications for clergy, counselors, and couples: the theme of “false friends”, “religious amplification”, and “one size fits half”. The study concludes that an inflated sense of relational entitlement and extrinsic religiosity negatively impact the marital satisfaction of married Christian couples in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of how religious attendance, personal religious activity, and importance of religion are related to marital adjustment and emotional, sexual, and spiritual intimacy. Previous research suggests that church attendance is related to higher marital adjustment; however, the relationship between sexual satisfaction and religiosity appears to be minimal, although Christian authors often suggest a link. The Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), and the Emotional, Sexual, and Spiritual Intimacy Scale (ESSI) were administered to a sample of 88 married individuals. One-way ANOVAs found that religious attendance was not related to marital adjustment, or sexual or emotional intimacies, but it did have a significant relationship to three of the RDAS's subscales; decision-making, stability and values. Furthermore, religious attendance, personal religious activities, and importance of religion had significant relationships with spiritual intimacy, but were not related to emotional and sexual intimacies. Finally, when the sample was divided by frequency of self-reported religious activities, emotional and sexual intimacy were significantly correlated with spiritual intimacy for those endorsing high levels of religious attendance, personal religious activities, or importance of religion, but these correlations were not found for those endorsing low or moderate levels of religious attendance, personal religious activities or importance of religion. The study was limited by convenience sampling, unequal sample sizes, and potentially inconsistent due to the use of self-report measures. Future research may benefit from matching spouses, a more generalizable population, and examining quality of personal religious activities and attendance as opposed to quantity.

Book excerpt: There is a well-established and positive association between religiosity and marital satisfaction. What is less clear is the effect of religiosity on marital sexual outcomes, with research findings that have run the gamut from negative to positive. Given that most religions teach that marriage is the divinely appointed context for a sexual relationship, religious persons who are married and in sexual relationships could have a different experience with sex than those who are not in a marital sexual relationship. Although the majority of the population in the United States is religious, sex in religious marriages has received scant research attention. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine in three manuscripts the association between religiosity, sexuality, and marital connection. In manuscript one, I look at how doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dovetails with principles of social science in ways that could potentially improve the sexual connection in these religious marriages. Specifically, I examine how Latter-day Saints can better sanctify their sexuality through autonomy and relatedness. As member couples dovetail healthy religious principles with social science principles, such as focusing on avoiding selfishness and developing a self in a larger moral context, they can experience improved marital connection. In study two, I research the spontaneous mentions of sexuality in interviews with highly religious families in the American Families of Faith dataset. These 198 highly religious families come from a rich variety of socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

Book excerpt: A substantial body of research attests to religion's prominent influence on marital relationship quality. Aspects of religiosity that appear to enhance the quality of marital relationships include couples’ religious homogamy, prayer, religious involvement, spouses’ virtues, and sanctification of marriage. The couples reported studying the Scriptures to be beneficial in coping with life challenges and playing an important role in spouses’ conflict resolution. This study examines the association between marital satisfaction and biblical principles related to constructs such as forgiveness and commitment. It is assumed that relational virtues become relevant for marital quality as scriptural beliefs required by God. Spouses forgive and commit to their partner as a submission to God that works sanctification in their lives, impacting marital satisfaction. The quantitative survey method is used to assess the relationship between spouses’ scriptural beliefs, the faithfulness of their relationship with God, and marital satisfaction. The convenience sample is used to select 200 married Protestant Christians from the church members list to complete a Qualtrics survey. Multiple regressions analysis helps to illustrate how biblical beliefs relate to marital satisfaction. The study identifies scriptural beliefs that practitioners can utilize to help couples form and maintain well-functioning unions. Future research needs to search for more specific biblical beliefs that contribute to couples’ well-being and develop counseling programs for couples that nurture the manifestation of marital virtues through God’s sanctification process.

Book excerpt: Research on marital satisfaction has been limited to Caucasian couples in a middle and upper socioeconomic status. Because values differ throughout ethnicities, and religious commitment rather than personal satisfaction contributes to higher levels of marital satisfaction, understanding these values and differences may help developers in the field of couple relationship education programs strengthen their approach to helping Christian couples develop skills that contribute to marital satisfaction. The purpose of this research is to examine if marital setting, ethnicity and Couple Relationship Education (CRE) and Marriage Relationship Education (MRE) affect marital satisfaction in Christian couples. The participants in this study will involve 65 Christian individuals married for at least five years who reside in a culturally diverse urban setting in South Florida. This research will include a self-report survey, The Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS), Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test (LWMAT) and the Marital Instability Index (MII).
