Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are studying the gamma ray and neutron multiplicity of various fission processes, beginning with the spontaneous fission of 252Cf, for a variety of basic and applied science purposes. The Livermore-Berkeley Array for Collaborative Experiments (LiBerACE) consists of six high-purity germanium Clover detectors (HPGe) each enclosed by an array of 16 bismuth-germanate (BGO) detectors. These detectors were arranged in a cubic pattern around a 1 [mu]Ci 252Cf source to attempt to cover as much solid angle of gamma ray emission as possible with a high level of segmentation. The single-gamma detector response function is determined at several energies by tagging in a HPGe detector on the photopeak of one of two gamma rays in two-gamma ray calibration sources and observing the multiplicity of the remainder of the array. Summing these single-gamma responses in groups yields the response function of the array to higher multiplicity events, which are convolved with multiplicity distributions from theoretical models and compared to the measured results to test the models validity.

This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment investigating high multiplicity gamma-ray events in a region covering 18 percent of 4.pi. around 90° in the center of mass was performed at the CERN ISR by sharing the detector of the CERN-Columbia-Rockefeller group. Information on the dependence of the cross section on gamma-ray multiplicity as well as the dependence of the average gamma-ray and charge multiplicities on the center-of-mass energy was obtained. Studies were made of correlations between the number of gamma-rays and charged particles, as well as between the total number of gamma-rays plus charged particles and the total measured energy per event. Two-body inclusive rapidity distributions in the rapidity interval 0.86 to -0.86 covered by the detector are also presented. The main corrections to the data, as well as considerations of background effects, are extensively discussed. Also discussed are a Monte Carlo calculation of the gamma-ray multiplicity distribution expected from .pi.° decay and a calculation based upon an independent emission model of .pi.° production. Both calculations give identical results, which are found to be several orders of magnitude lower than the experimental results for gamma multiplicities greater than or equal to 10. (auth).

Book excerpt: This book introduces the physics and chemistry of plastic scintillators (fluorescent polymers) that are able to emit light when exposed to ionizing radiation, discussing their chemical modification in the early 1950s and 1960s, as well as the renewed upsurge in interest in the 21st century. The book presents contributions from various researchers on broad aspects of plastic scintillators, from physics, chemistry, materials science and applications, covering topics such as the chemical nature of the polymer and/or the fluorophores, modification of the photophysical properties (decay time, emission wavelength) and loading of additives to make the material more sensitive to, e.g., fast neutrons, thermal neutrons or gamma rays. It also describes the benefits of recent technological advances for plastic scintillators, such as nanomaterials and quantum dots, which allow features that were previously not achievable with regular organic molecules or organometallics.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the enormous amount of material accumulated in the field of nuclear density functional theory over the last few decades. The goal of the theory is to provide a complete quantum mechanical description and explanation of nuclear phenomena in terms of the local density distribution as a basic ingredient rather than the many particle wavefunction. This leads to a considerable reduction in the mathematical complexity of nuclear many-body problems and to a great conceptual simplicity and visual clarity in its theoretical treatment. The authors develop the mathematical framework on which the theory is based and consider the associated approaches used to analyze experimental data in a variety of nuclei and nuclear processes with widely differing properties.

Book excerpt: This book describes the Proceedings of the International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology held at Jillich in May 1991. The conference was in a series of application oriented nuclear data conferences organized in the past under the auspices of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Nuclear Data Committee (NEANDC) and with the support of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Committee on Reactor Physics (NEACRP). It was the fIrst international conference on nuclear data held in Germany, with the scientific responsibility entrusted to the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the Research Centre Jillich. The scientific programme was established by the International Programme Committee in consultation with the International Advisers, and the NEA and IAEA cooperated in the organization. A total of 328 persons from 37 countries and fIve international organizations participated. The scope of these Proceedings extends to a wide range of interdisciplinary topics dealing with measu rement, calculation, evaluation and application of nuclear data, with a major emphasis on numerical data. Both energy and non-energy related applications are considered and due attention is given to some fundamental aspects relevant to the understanding of nuclear data.

Book excerpt: Simulation of ODE/PDE Models with MATLAB®, OCTAVE and SCILAB shows the reader how to exploit a fuller array of numerical methods for the analysis of complex scientific and engineering systems than is conventionally employed. The book is dedicated to numerical simulation of distributed parameter systems described by mixed systems of algebraic equations, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs). Special attention is paid to the numerical method of lines (MOL), a popular approach to the solution of time-dependent PDEs, which proceeds in two basic steps: spatial discretization and time integration. Besides conventional finite-difference and element techniques, more advanced spatial-approximation methods are examined in some detail, including nonoscillatory schemes and adaptive-grid approaches. A MOL toolbox has been developed within MATLAB®/OCTAVE/SCILAB. In addition to a set of spatial approximations and time integrators, this toolbox includes a collection of application examples, in specific areas, which can serve as templates for developing new programs. Simulation of ODE/PDE Models with MATLAB®, OCTAVE and SCILAB provides a practical introduction to some advanced computational techniques for dynamic system simulation, supported by many worked examples in the text, and a collection of codes available for download from the book’s page at www.springer.com. This text is suitable for self-study by practicing scientists and engineers and as a final-year undergraduate course or at the graduate level.
