Book excerpt: The ability of molecular oxygen to absorb light in the Schumann-Runge ultraviolet region of the spectrum has been used to follow the change in concentration of molecular oxygen as a function of time behind shock waves in oxygen and in a mixture of 10-percent oxygen in argon. Analysis of the records obtained yielded values for the dissociation rate of oxygen as a function of temperature over the range 4,000° to 10,000°K. The highest previously reported experimental results in the literature were at 7,500°K.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new technique is described with which reaction rates in gases can be determined at high temperatures. First, the hydrodynamics of a dissociating diatomic gas is discussed; the conservation equations are applied across a normal shock wave. The thermodynamic variables are calculated as a function of the degree of dissociation. A mech-ANISM OF THE SHOCK LOCATION IN FRONT OF A SPHERE TRAVELING AT SUPERSONIC SPEEDS IS PROPOSED. Then, the relation between the shock separation distance and the rate of dissociation is discussed. The method is applied to the dissociation of diatomic oxygen. The experiment was carried out in a ballistics range. Small spheres were fired into pure oxygen at velocities from 6,000 to 12,500 fps at pressures of 20, 100, and 200 mm mercury. The separation distance of the shock wave from the sphere is measured on photographs of the sphere in flight. The dissociation rate is given which provides the best fit of predicted detachment distance to the experimentally observed distance. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an in rferometer and drum camera to measure the density ratio behind an incident shock wave in mixtures of argon and h drogen, the dissociation rates for two isotopes of hydrogen have been meas red. Sufficient data w re obtained to measure the rate constants for the reaction in a temperature range from 2800 K to 4500 K. The relative efficiencies of argon, the hydrogen molecule, and the hydrogen atom in dissociating hydrogen have been found for each isotope. The rate constants for the hydrogen molecule and the argon atom as third bodies for association were found to have a simple 1/T depen ence. The rate constants for the collision of three atoms causing association were found to be much larger t an the other rate constants and to have a more involved temperature dependence. The rate constant for the association of hydrogen where the third body is a hydrogen atom shows a marked change in its rate of decrease at about 3400 K. (A thor).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book excerpt: The time interval between the ionization of a molecule by electron impact and its dissociation was determined from the kinetic energy of the fragment ions. This technique allows a direct differential sampling of the dissociation rate at various times, in contrast to previous, integral methods. The use of disc-shaped molecular beam of 28 micrometers half-width and a draw-out field of 10,000 V/cm in the ionization region resulted in a minimum measured time interval of 7.4 nonoseconds. The longest times measured were between 5 and 6 microseconds. The time dependence of the decomposition rate was measured for two decompositions in butane, five in heptane, three in benzene, one in CD4 and one in CO2(++), with rather similar results. It was established that the decay is not exponential. All decay curves, plotted semi-logarithmically, were found to have an increasing slope towards shorter times, indicating contributions from a variety of rate constants in agreement with the predictions of the statistical theory of ion decompositions.

Translational energy released in the dissociation and product mass ratios were explicitly measured, allowing a detailed understanding of the dissociation mechanisms. The technique was applied to the molecules of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, chlorine, and other molecules. A detailed description of the measurement technique is presented together with the measured data.

Johnson in 1960, the contribution of auroral particles to the dissociation of oxygen molecules in the polar upper atmosphere is investigated. The maximum rate coefficients are 4 x 10−8 (cm3 sec)−1 and 2 x 10−8 (cm3 sec)−1 for protons of energy spectrum E−2.8 dE and for electrons of energy spectrum E−4 dE, respectively. The height of maximum dissociation is around 90 km both for protons and electrons. The heating of the polar mesosphere by exothermic association of the oxygen atoms, intensified by the subsidence of the upper polar atmosphere during the polar night, is calculated and found to be close to the estimate given by W.W. Kellogg in 1961. The investigation indicates, however, that Kellogg's estimate should be reduced slightly to allow for the cooling effect produced by far infrared emission from atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere."--Page i.
