Book excerpt: A method is developed for calculating the growth of a turbulent boundary layer at hypersonic Mach numbers. Excellent agreement with experimental results from axisymmetric nozzles has been obtained by the application of this method. The method utilizes a modification of Stewartson's transformation to simplify the integration of the momentum equation. Heat transfer is taken into account by evaluating the gas properties at Eckert's reference temperature and by using a modification of Crocco's quadratic for the temperature distribution in the boundary layer. A new empirical relation is used for the incompressible friction coefficient which agrees with experimental data over a Reynold's number range from 10(superscript 5) to 10(superscript 9).

This book was released on 1954 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer data from four wind-tunnel experiments and two free-flight experiments with turbulent boundary layers have been examined to see whether or not they are well represented by the Reynolds analogy or a modification thereof. The heat-transfer results are put into the form of dimensionless Stanton numbers based on fluid properties at the outer edge of the boundary layer and are compared with skin-friction coefficients for the same Mach numbers and wall to free-stream temperature ratios as obtained from an interpolation of the existing skin-friction data. The effective Reynolds number is taken to be the length Reynolds number measured from the effective turbulent origin, a position which differs importantly from the leading edge of the test surface in some cases.

Book excerpt: The heat-transfer data obtained from the model were found to correlate when the T' method of Sommer and Short was used. The increase in turbulent heat-transfer rate with a reduction in wall to free-stream temperature ratio was of the same order of magnitude as has been found for the turbulent skin-friction coefficient.

Book excerpt: The results of the investigation suggest that at transonic speeds and at small angles of attack the calculation of all aerodynamic characteristics of slender, three-dimensional shapes can be made by use of transonic slender-body theory when the pressures on the equivalent body of revolution are Imown, either by experiment, or by an adequate nonlinear theory. From transonic slender-body theory it is deduced that the slenderness required for this application is the same as that required for the successful application of the transonic area rule.

Book excerpt: A previous report, NACA TN 3007, gave force and moment data for the NACA 64A010 airfoil section equipped alternately with a flap and a slat at the leading edge, and with a split flap and a double-slotted flap at the trailing edge. The present report presents the chordwise distributions of pressure measured concurrently with the force and moment data of NACA 3007. The pressure data for the leading-edge flap and slat have been converted into coefficients of normal force, chord force, and moment based on the geometry of the leading-edge device.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of combined heat and mass transfer from a flat plate has been made in terms of Prandtl's simpified physical concept of the turbulent boundary layer. The results of the analysis show that tor conditioins of reasonably small heat and mass transfer, the ratio of the mass- and heat-transfer coefficients is dependent on the Reynolds number of the boundary layer, the Prandtl number of the medium of diffusion, and the Schmidt number of the diffusing fluid in the medium of diffusion. For the particular case of water evaporating into air, the ratio of mass-transfer coefficient to heat-transfer coefficient is found to be slightly greater than unity.

Book excerpt: An analysis was performed to determine the effects on the rates of convective heat transfer produced by arbitrary variations of the surface temperature with distance along a flat plate. The analysis was confined to the case of a low-speed turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate oriented parallel to the free-stream velocity. It was found that a continuously variable surface temperature has, in general, a smaller effect on the local convective heat transfer than does a surface-temperature discontinuity.
