Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution measurements were made on the right wing of a P-39N-1 airplane at values of Mach number up to 0.80. The results showed that a considerable portion of the lift was carried by components of the airplane other than the wings, and that the proportion of lift carried by the wings may vary considerably with Mach number, thus changing the bending moment at the wing root whether or not there is a shift in the lateral position of the center of pressure. It was also shown that the center of pressure does not necessarily move outward at high Mach numbers, even though the wing-thickness ratio decreases toward the wing tip. The wing pitching-moment coefficient increased sharply in a negative direction at a Mach number slightly higher than the critical Mach number. The lift-curve slope increased with Mach number which, in some instances, were considerably above the critical value. Pressures inside the wing were small and negative.

This book was released on 1946 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to establish a standard procedure for rating and testing multistage axial-flow compressors, the NACA Subcommittee on Compressors appointed a panel to write such a procedure. This panel made recommendations for standardization of test setups, instrumentation, test procedure, data to be taken, and the presentation of the data. These recommendations are presented.

This book was released on 1944 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A flight investigation was made to compare static pressures in subsonic and supersonic flow over an airplane wing as measured by static-pressure tubes, a static-pressure belt, and orifices flush with the wing surface. The measurements were made on the upper surface of the wing of the P-47D airplane over a range of flight conditions in which local Mach numbers from 0.34 to 1.41 were obtained at the measurement stations. For some of the tests, a total-pressure tube was mounted on the wing surface to determine its characteristics in supersonic flow. The results indicated that static-pressure measurements obtained with suitably designed and installed flush orifices, static-pressure tubes, and static-pressure belt will be in reasonable agreement for both subsonic and supersonic flow. The pressures in supersonic flow measured by the total-pressure tube mounted on the wing surface were found to be in close agreement with values predicted by theory.

Book Synopsis Measurements of the Pressure Distribution on the Horizontal-tail Surface of a Typical Propeller-driven Pursuit Airplane in Flight by : Melvin Sadoff
Download or read book Measurements of the Pressure Distribution on the Horizontal-tail Surface of a Typical Propeller-driven Pursuit Airplane in Flight written by Melvin Sadoff and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution measurements were made in steady straight and accelerated flight over both sides of the horizontal-tail surface of a typical pursuit airplane up to a Mach number of 0.79. The results showed that a sharply increasing down-load was required to balance the increased diving moment of the wing-fuselage-propeller group at Mach numbers above about 0.70. There was little change, up to a Mach number of about 0.65, of the tail-load gradient (rate of increase of tail load for a unit change in acceleration factor); beyond that Mach number, however, a rapid decrease of tail-load gradient to a Mach number of about 0.73 and then a very sharp increase up to a Mach number of 0.785 was noted. The root bending moments increased considerably on the right tail and decreased, to a lesser extent, on the left tail at the higher Mach numbers, resulting in increased fuselage torsional moments at high speeds. At the higher values of lift coefficient (0.5 to 0.8), there was little change of the lateral distance to the center pressure up to a Mach number of about 0.73; at the highest speed and at low lift coefficients (0 to 0.1) the center of pressure was inboard approximately 3 feet on the left tail and 1.5 feet on the right tail as compared with the values at lower speeds. It appears that satisfactory quantitative data on total tail loads may be obtained from measurements at four stations, equally spaced along the entire tail span.
