Book Synopsis Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 3 by : G. Bergeles
Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 3 written by G. Bergeles and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and discussses new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. At present, turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects which are nearly always important in practice, is still in an unsatisfactory state and introduces considerable uncertainities in the accuracy of CFD calculations. These and other aspects of turbulence modelling and measurements are dealt with in detail by experts in the field. The resulting book is an up-to-date review of the most recent research in this exciting area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: obtained are still severely limited to low Reynolds numbers (about only one decade better than direct numerical simulations), and the interpretation of such calculations for complex, curved geometries is still unclear. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. The realization of the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was p- sible by the general support of: U. S. Army Research Office U. S. Navy Research Office Continuing Education Center of The Pennsylvania State University The conference organization was carried out by the organizing committee consisting of: F. Durst, Universitat Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Fed. Rep. of Germany V. W. Goldschmidt, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. , USA B. E. Launder, University of California, Davis, Calif. , USA F. W. Book Synopsis The Global Geometry of Turbulence by : Javier Jiménez
Download or read book The Global Geometry of Turbulence written by Javier Jiménez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Advanced Research Workshop was to bring together Physicists, Applied Mathematicians and Fluid Dynamicists, including very specially experimentalists, to review the available knowledge on the global structural aspects of turbulent flows, with an especial emphasis on open systems, and to try to reach a consensus on their possible relationship to recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of low dimensional dynamical systems and amplitude equations. A lot has been learned during recent years on the non-equilibrium behaviour of low dimen sional dynamical systems, including some fluid flows (Rayleigh-Benard, Taylor-Couette, etc. ). These are mostly closed flows and many of the global structural features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, including chaotic behaviour, period doubling, intermit tency, etc. . It has also been shown that some of these flows are intrinsically low dimensional, which accounts for much of the observed similarities. Open flows seem to be different, and experimental observations point to an intrinsic high dimensionality. However, some of the tran sitional features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, specially in the intermittent behaviour of subcritical flows (pipes, channels, boundary layers with suction, etc. ), and in the large scale geometry of coherent structures of free shear flows (mixing layers, jets and wakes).

Book Synopsis Particulate Gravity Currents by : W. D. McCaffrey
Download or read book Particulate Gravity Currents written by W. D. McCaffrey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arises from the conference Sediment Transport andDeposition by Particulate Gravity Currents held in the UK in 1998.The field of particulate gravity currents ranges from turbiditycurrents in the oceans, lakes and reservoirs to pyroclastic densitycurrents and avalanches, debris flows and lahars, grainflows, powder snow avalanches, effluent dispersal and ancient gravitycurrent deposits. Although the sub-division of particulate gravity currents intodiscrete sub-categories (such as grain flows, turbidity currents ordebris flows) provides a convenient descriptive shorthand, itundermines the sense of process continuum needed to describe manynatural flows. The structure of this volume reflects an integrativeaim, with papers grouped by research approach. The first section ofthe book contains six papers on theoretical and numerical modellingof a range of flow types. The following four papers are focusedupon combined theoretical and experimental modelling approaches. The next section contains four papers describing experimentalmodelling and the final section includes five papers detailingfield-based studies. The volume stands as a testament to the broad range of researchcarried out on particulate gravity currents, and hints at theenhanced rate of progress that is likely to be achieved throughfurther integrated studies.
