Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report preliminary results from a measurement of the process 2H(.gamma., p)n at theta/sub CM/ = 90° and for photon energies between 0.8 and 1.6 GeV. The results are compared to a conventional calculation based on meson-exchange and to models based on sub-nucleonic degrees of freedom. We find strong disagreement with the meson-exchange calculation, and best agreement with simple constituent counting at the highest energies.

Book excerpt: The differential cross section for two-body deuteron photodisintegration was measured at photon energies between 0.8 and 4.0 GeV and centerofmass angles [theta]cm =37°, 53°, 70°, and 90° as part of CEBAF experiment E89012. Constituent counting rules predict a scaling of this cross section at asymptotic energies. In previous experiments this scaling has surprisingly been observed at energies between 1.4 and 2.8 GeV at 90°. The results from this experiment are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The data at 70° and 90° show a constituent counting rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon energy. The 37° and 53°g data do not agree with the constituent counting rule prediction. The new data are compared with a variety of theoretical models inspired by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and traditional hadronic nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: The first measurements of the d(gamma, p)n differential cross section at forward angles and photon energies above 4 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The results indicate evidence of an angular dependent scaling threshold. Results at theta{sub cm} = 37{sup o} are consistent with the constituent counting rules for E{sub gamma}H" 4 GeV, while those at 70{sup o} are consistent with the constituent counting rules for E{sub gamma} H" 1.5 GeV.

Book excerpt: Results are presented for two-body deuteron photodisintegration, i.e., d([gamma], p)n, at [theta]/sub CM/ = 90° and for photon energies up to 1.6 GeV. These results are discussed in the light of several theoretical models. The data suggest that, at the highest energies, the energy dependence of the cross section is that given by simple constituent counting. We also discuss the need for additional work, both experimental and theoretical, to help resolve conflicting points of view. 4 refs., 4 figs.

Download or read book Photodisintegration of the Deuteron at High Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the angular distribution for the [gamma]d→+pn reaction were performed at SLAC for photon energies between 0.7 and 1.8 GeV (experiment NE8) and between 1.6 and 4.4. GeV (experiment NE17). The final results for experiment NE8 will be presented, but only preliminary results for NE17 will be discussed. The data at [theta]{sub cm} = 90° appear to follow the constituent counting rules. The angular distribution at high photon energies exhibit large values of the cross section at forward angles. There is evidence that the cross section may also be large at backward angles and high energies.

Book excerpt: Nearly complete angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section have been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector and the tagged photon beam at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10{sup o}-160{sup o}. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well described by the nonperturbative quark gluon string model.

Book excerpt: The first measurements of the differential cross section from d([gamma], p)n up to 4.0 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF, formerly CEBAF). Bremsstrahlung photons from electron beam impinging on a copper radiator and a liquid deuterium target were employed for this experiment. The experiment was performed in Hall C where the photoprotons at forward angles in the center-of-mass were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer (HMS) and photoprotons at backward angles were detected in the Short Orbit Spectrometer (SOS). The bremsstrahlung photon energy was reconstructed from the measured proton momentum and angle using the two-body kinematics. We report the cross section results at the proton center-of-mass angles of 37[degree] and 90[degree]. These results are in good agreement with previous lower energy measurements. The 90[degree] data continue to show the constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4 GeV. The results will be compared with models based on QCD as well as those based on meson-exchange theory.

Download or read book The Photodisintegration of the Deuteron by Polarized Photons written by F. F. Liu and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asymmetry in the photodisintegration of the deuteron by polarized photons has been measured between photon energies of 75 and 230 MeV. Measurements are made mostly at 90 degrees in the center of mass system, but limited data at 45 degrees and 135 degrees are also obtained. The data below 140 MeV are compared with current theories. At 90 degrees our results are generally smaller than theoretical calculations. The measured asymmetry changes sign at about 130 MeV and shows a backward peaking at the high energy points. (Author).
