Book excerpt: A basic problem in remote sensing is to find parameters which can be measured that can lead to a unique signature of given target materials. Two such parameters are the dielectric coefficient and conductivity of the material. In this report the feasibility of measuring the complex dielectric constant of a smooth material from an aircraft or satellite by measuring the refelection of an incident electromagnetic wave is investigated. The results of several experimental approaches to the remote measurement of complex dielectric constant are reported. The methods investigated include X band swept frequency reflectance measurements, dual polarization, and short pulse measurements. For measurements at frequencies above 100 MHz it is shown that the dielectric constant can be determined with plus or minus 10% by measurement of the real part of the complex reflection coefficientto plus or minus 0.3 db. It is further shown that the complex polarization method for determining the complex dielectric constant is not usable for angles of incidence near the normal. (Author).

The book starts by providing an introduction to the fundamental optical spectra of solids. The text then discusses Maxwell's equations and the dielectric function; absorption and dispersion; and the theory of free-electron metals. The quantum mechanical theory of direct and indirect transitions between bands; the applications of dispersion relations; and the derivation of an expression for the dielectric function in the self-consistent field approximation are also encompassed. The book further tackles current-current correlations; the fluctuation-dissipation theorem; and the effect of surface plasmons on optical properties and photoemission. People involved in the study of the optical properties of solids will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: The development of high speed, high frequency circuits and systems requires an understanding of the properties of materials functioning at the microwave level. This comprehensive reference sets out to address this requirement by providing guidance on the development of suitable measurement methodologies tailored for a variety of materials and application systems. Bringing together coverage of a broad range of techniques in one publication for the first time, this book: Provides a comprehensive introduction to microwave theory and microwave measurement techniques. Examines every aspect of microwave material properties, circuit design and applications. Presents materials property characterisation methods along with a discussion of the underlying theory. Outlines the importance of microwave absorbers in the reduction in noise levels in microwave circuits and their importance within defence industry applications. Relates each measurement technique to its application across the fields of microwave engineering, high-speed electronics, remote sensing and the physical sciences. This book will appeal to practising engineers and technicians working in the areas of RF, microwaves, communications, solid-state devices and radar. Senior students, researchers in microwave engineering and microelectronics and material scientists will also find this book a very useful reference.

Book excerpt: The book deals with the design and developmental aspects of an embedded based system for the measurement of dielectric constant in liquids and solids. A dielectric is a substance that can sustain an electric field and acts as an insulator. Some liquids and gases can serve as good dielectric materials, having a special property of storing and dissipating electrical energy when subjected to electromagnetic fields. Dry air is an excellent dielectric. The dielectric data are required on a large variety of materials under different physical conditions for many industrial, scientific and medical applications of microwave energy. The embedded based measurement system, designed and developed in the present book, is quite successful in measuring the dielectric constant of liquids and solids with reasonable accuracy and its application for investigation/measurement of chemical, fibers, glass, oil, ceramics and other fields is found to be very useful.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method of Determining Dielectric Constants of Liquids by Undamped Oscillations: Thesis The first published results on the measurements of dielectric constants were those obtained by Faraday in his classical experi ments in which he demonstrated that the capacity of a condenser de pends upon the substance used as a dielectric. (experimental Re searches in Electricity, vol.i; p Finding that the capacity 0 a condenser in which sulphur was used as a dielectric was times as great as that of the same condenser with air as the dielectric, Faraday termed this value the Specific inductive capacity of sul phur. The term dielectric constant, however; has been more genera ly used of late years. Previous to the year 1889, all methods of determining the dielectric constant of a substance made use of elec tric fields set up by either direct or slowly alternating currents. The discoveries of Hertz in 1888 suggested new methods in which high frequency currents were employed. The first of these methods, that of j.j. Thomson, was developed in 1889, and employed a frequency of approximately twenty five millions. A11 high frequency methods may be divided into three general classes: (1) those based upon Maxwell' electromagnetic theory of light; (2) capacity methods; and (3) those based upon the theory of dielectric polarization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A non-contact method for determining the index of refraction or dielectric constant of a thin film on a substrate at a desired frequency in the GHz to THz range having a corresponding wavelength larger than the thickness of the thin film (which may be only a few microns). The method comprises impinging the desired-frequency beam in free space upon the thin film on the substrate and measuring the measured phase change and the measured field reflectance from the reflected beam for a plurality of incident angles over a range of angles that includes the Brewster's angle for the thin film. The index of refraction for the thin film is determined by applying Fresnel equations to iteratively calculate a calculated phase change and a calculated field reflectance at each of the plurality of incident angles, and selecting the index of refraction that provides the best mathematical curve fit with both the dataset of measured phase changes and the dataset of measured field reflectances for each incident angle. The dielectric constant for the thin film can be calculated as the index of refraction squared.
