Book excerpt: This Code of Practice, which has also been endorsed by WHO, PAHO and ESTRO, fulfils the need for a systematic and internationally unified approach to the calibration of ionization chambers in terms of absorbed dose to water and to the use of these detectors in determining the absorbed dose to water for the radiation beams used in radiotherapy. It provides a methodology for the determination of absorbed dose to water in the low, medium and high energy photon beams, electron beams, proton beams and heavy ion beams used for external radiation therapy.

Book excerpt: Passenger screening at commercial airports in the United States has gone through significant changes since the events of September 11, 2001. In response to increased concern over terrorist attacks on aircrafts, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has deployed security systems of advanced imaging technology (AIT) to screen passengers at airports. To date (December 2014), TSA has deployed AITs in U.S. airports of two different technologies that use different types of radiation to detect threats: millimeter wave and X-ray backscatter AIT systems. X-ray backscatter AITs were deployed in U.S. airports in 2008 and subsequently removed from all airports by June 2013 due to privacy concerns. TSA is looking to deploy a second-generation X-ray backscatter AIT equipped with privacy software to eliminate production of an image of the person being screened in order to alleviate these concerns. This report reviews previous studies as well as current processes used by the Department of Homeland Security and equipment manufacturers to estimate radiation exposures resulting from backscatter X-ray advanced imaging technology system use in screening air travelers. Airport Passenger Screening Using Backscatter X-Ray Machines examines whether exposures comply with applicable health and safety standards for public and occupational exposures to ionizing radiation and whether system design, operating procedures, and maintenance procedures are appropriate to prevent over exposures of travelers and operators to ionizing radiation. This study aims to address concerns about exposure to radiation from X-ray backscatter AITs raised by Congress, individuals within the scientific community, and others.

Book excerpt: Radiosurgery performed with the "Gamma Knife" or on a linac facility is a specific radiotherapy method to treat certain lesions in the brain with a high single radiation dose. Geometric miss of a radiosurgica target is considered the most likely serious error in a stereotactic radiosurgery treatment. Therefore, the issue of quality assurance in stereotactic radiosurgery is a serious one for neurosurgeons, physicists, patients and those of us who wish to analyze the results of radiosurgery. The purpose of this book is to offer and describe a quality assurance program and procedures of the physical and technical aspects through identifying the sources of possible errors and suggesting quality assurance tests that should be performed in order for a stereotactic system to be used clinically.

Book excerpt: Facilities are established at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) to perform radiation-induced chromosome aberration analysis for biological dosimetry. Whole blood from healthy human volunteers was used after obtaining informed consent. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed in vitro to different types of radiation; sup 60 Co gamma rays (E(gamma) = 1.25 MeV, mean of the absorbed dose distribution of the lineal energy, y(sub D) = 1.9 keV/micrometers, 1 Gy/min); x rays (250 kV(sub p), E = 83 keV, y(sub D) = 4 keV/micrometers, 1 Gy/min); or a fission-spectrum neutron source (E = 0.71 MeV, y(sub D) = 65 keV/micrometers, 0.25 Gy/min). Distribution of radiation-induced dicentrics among cells exhibited Poisson statistics as characterized by the Papworth method (Papworth 1970). Dose-response relationships for the yield of dicentrics for photon sources were fitted with a linear-quadratic model using the maximum-likelihood method and for the neutron source by a weighted linear regression method. Comparison of the data with other published studies is presented. The dose-response relationships for dicentric induction by low-and high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation are consistent with the single- and two-track model of aberration formation, Y = alpha D + beta D(sup 2). An increase in y(sub D) resulted in an increase in dicentric yield. As expected, fission neutrons induced a significantly higher yield of dicentrics than that caused by low-LET sources. The linear component of the model, corresponding to damage caused by single-tracks, is predominant with fission neutrons so that the dose-effect relationship is essentially linear. An automated metaphase finder system with a satellite scoring utility was used to improve data collection.

Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this respected book encompasses all the advances and changes that have been made since it was last revised. It not only presents new ideas and information, it shifts its emphases to accurately reflect the inevitably changing perspectives in the field engendered by progress in the understanding of radiological physics. The rapid development of computing technology in the three decades since the publication of the fourth edition has enabled the equally rapid expansion of radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and radiobiology. The understanding of these clinical disciplines is dependent on an appreciation of the underlying physics. The basic radiation physics of relevance to clinical oncology, radiology and nuclear medicine has undergone little change over the last 70 years, so much of the material in the introductory chapters retains the essential flavour of the fourth edition, updated as required. This book is written to help the practitioners in these fields understand the physical science, as well as to serve as a basic tool for physics students who intend working as medical radiation physicists in these clinical fields. It is the authors’ hope that students and practitioners alike will find the fifth edition of The Physics of Radiology lucid and straightforward.
