We present measurements, simulations, and analysis of (1) the CSR-induced energy loss, (2) the related transverse emittance growth, and (3) the microbunching-induced CSR directly observed at optical wavelengths.

The angular dependence in the mm wave region is not the same as that given by high-frequency radiation expressions since the wavelength and the beam radiator size are comparable; hence diffraction effects are important. A prototype polarizing Michelson interferometer has been designed, constructed and is now being tested. The diffraction-limited design meets the demands of the rigorous space and experimental conditions in the linac area. The instrument is of rugged constructed using retroreflectors and thus is optically stable for long periods of time. It contains both reference and interferogram detectors to minimize the influence of linac drifts on the data analysis. To eliminate the intensity loss at low frequencies due to diffraction and waveguide effects the next generation of interferometer and detector will have 2x larger apertures.

If the bunches are bent in the dipoles of a magnetic bunch compressor, they emit coherent synchrotron radiation with strongly enhanced intensity with respect to incoherent synchrotron radiation. Here we report on the experimental and theoretical study of the effect of this coherent radiation emission on the distribution of the electrons in the six-dimensional phase space. Transverse emittances, bunch lengths, and energy spectra were measured for constant bunch compression ratios but different horizontal beam sizes in the bunch compressor. Further, the shielding effect of the finite vacuum chamber height on the mean beam energy loss was investigated by using two vacuum chambers of different heights in a four-magnet chicane. The results are compared with simulations using TraFiC4 and ELEGANT.

Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the dipoles could limit the performance of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report the experimental studies on measuring CSR and its effects on the beam at the A0 photoinjector in the emittance exchange line. After reporting the CSR power measurements, we report on the diagnostic scheme based on a weak skew quad in the emittance exchange line to study the CSR effects on the beam and other beam dynamics. In this work, we have reported on CSR measurements and the effect of skew quad on the dogleg line with the 5-cell turned on and off. We plan to study CSR effects on the bunch with the 5-cell on at larger chirp. This is will not only increase the CSR self-effect but also reduce the beamsize at the screen for convenient beamsize measurements.

In this paper the authors extend the frequency-domain analysis into the regime of strong shielding, in which the threshold harmonic exceeds the characteristic frequency of the bunch. The result is then compared to the shielded steady-state CSR power obtained using image charges.

Book excerpt: The physics of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) emitted by ultra-relativistic electron bunches, known since the last century, has become increasingly important with the development of high peak current free electron lasers and shorter bunch lengths in storage rings. Coherent radiation can be described as a low frequency part of the familiar synchrotron radiation in bending magnets. As this part is independent of the electron energy, the fields of different electrons of a short bunch can be in phase and the total power of the radiation will be quadratic with the number of electrons. Naturally the frequency spectrum of the longitudinal electron distribution in a bunch is of the same importance as the overall electron bunch length. The interest in the utilization of high power radiation from the terahertz and far infrared region in the field of chemical, physical and biological processes has led synchrotron radiation facilities to pay more attention to the production of coherent radiation. Several laboratories have proposed the construction of a facility wholly dedicated to terahertz production using the coherent radiation in bending magnets initiated by the longitudinal instabilities in the ring. Existing synchrotron radiation facilities also consider such a possibility among their future plans. There is a beautiful introduction to CSR in the 'ICFA Beam Dynamics Newsletter' N 35 (Editor C. Biscari). In this paper we recall the basic properties of CSR from the theory and what new effects, we can get from the precise simulations of the coherent radiation using numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. In particular, transverse variation of the particle energy loss in a bunch, discovered in these simulations, explains the slice emittance growth in bending magnets of the bunch compressors and transverse de-coherence in undulators. CSR may play same the role as the effect of quantum fluctuations of synchrotron radiation in damping rings. It can limit the minimum achievable emittance in the synchrotron light sources for short bunches.

In this dissertation, research is described on the mechanisms driving self-radiating forces arising from high-brightness beam environments and the mitigation of such forces. In the first half of the dissertation, we will focus on quantifying the Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) Effect for various accelerator scenarios. New expressions for the CSR RMS energy spread are developed for transient regime with and without bunch compression and for the subsequent drift section after a bend. The expressions are rigorously tested with the particle tracking codes ELEGANT and CSRTrack [14, 15]. In the latter half, we will take a particular focus on the final-stage bunch compression systems of linacs for X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), where these self-forces are prevalent, and introduce a new bunch compressor chicane design: the 5-Bend chicane. The new chicane's performance is compared versus a standard 4-Bend chicane in terms of emittance preservation and XFEL performance in a comprehensive simulation study. Though the work presented here pertains to the XFEL linac environment, the physics and techniques can be applied to any sort of accelerator involving high-peak current, low-emittance charged particle beams.
