Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rates in an X70 pipeline steel were measured over a wide range of stress intensities in laboratory air and in 3.5% sodium chloride solution under free corrosion and cathodic (coupled to zinc) potentials. The effects of stress ratio in all these environments and of cyclic frequency in the sodium chloride solution were studied. The results are compared with fatigue crack growth rates measured previously in lower strength X65 steel. The stress ratio strongly influences the fatigue crack growth thresholds and close-to-threshold growth rates. With increasing stress intensity range, the stress ratio effect decreases similarly in both air and aqueous environments. The lower cyclic frequency enhances corrosion fatigue crack growth rates at intermediate stress intensity ranges, as was observed earlier in X65 steel.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The useful life of steel structures that contain crack-like defects and that are subjected to cyclic loads in an aggressive environment is determined primarily by the time required for the defects to grow from subcritical dimensions to the critical size at which unstable fracture occurs. For these structures, subcritical crack growth is caused either by fatigue or by corrosion fatigue. Thus, as part of a long-range program to establish the necessary relations for predicting the corrosion-fatigue behavior of structural steels, the stress-corrosion-cracking susceptibility and the corrosion fatigue-crack-growth rates at 6 cpm of 4340 Steel heat-treated to yield strengths of 130, 180, and 220 ksi (896, 1241, and 1571 MN/m2) were investigated in a 3 percent solution of sodium chloride. The results were analyzed by using linear-elastic fracture mechanics methods and were compared with fatigue-crack-propagation data obtained in a room-temperature air environment. The results showed that the threshold stress-intensity factor below which crack growth does not occur in statiscally loaded specimens decreased with increased yield strength. The fatigue-crack-growth rates per cycle in the steels investigated in an air environment and below KIscc in the room-temperature solution of sodium chloride can be represented by the equation dadN=D(t)(?KI)n where n was equal to 2.7. The function D(t), which is a measure of the corrosion-fatigue susceptibility of the material, increased with increased yield strength. Fatigue-crack-growth rates below KIscc were accelerated by a factor of 2 when the 130-ksi yield-strength material was tested at 6 cpm in the sodium chloride solution. Under identical test conditions, the corrosion fatigue-crack-growth rates in the 180-ksi yield-strength material were five to six times higher than the fatigue crack-growth rates in air environment. Corrosion-fatigue crack-growth data below KIscc were not obtained for the 220-ksi yield-strength material because of the high susceptibility of this material to the test environment (KIscc=10.5ksiin., or 11.5 MN/m3/2).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rates over wide ranges of stress intensities (from threshold to nearly critical stress intensity) were measured on HY130 steel in 3.5% sodium chloride aqueous solution at several cyclic frequencies, stress ratios, and potentials. The growth rates are compared with reference data measured in laboratory air. The growth rate curves for both environments can be approximated by two linear sections converging at low stress intensity ranges to the same threshold, which depends only on the stress ratio. The upper parts of the lines with lower slopes converge again to the point where maximum stress intensity approaches its terminal value. As a result, the maximum environmental acceleration of crack growth appears at intermediate stress intensities, and it increases with decreasing frequency and potential. Data indicate a relatively low susceptibility of HY130 steel to corrosion fatigue. With increasing stress ratio R the fatigue crack growth threshold is shifted to lower stress intensity ranges by the same amount in both air and salt water environments. The effect of R on growth rate can be introduced into a power law expression.

Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth is a potential failure mechanism that can be strongly influenced by a salt-water environment. This paper discusses fatigue-crack-propagation studies performed on three high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.25C, 12Ni 180-grade maraging, and 18Ni 200-grade maraging. Each steel underwent a program of fatigue cycling in two environments, a "dry" environment consisting of ambient room air and a "wet" environment consisting of 3.5 percent NaCl salt water. Relationships for fatigue-crack-growth rates as a function of the fracture mechanics stress-intensity factor (K) were obtained experimentally for each steel in both environments. The engineering significance of these relationships is presented in terms of stress levels and flaw sizes relevant to the steels under investigation. The results of this work indicate that, in an air environment, the fatigue-crack-growth rate correlates with the stress-intensity-factor range according to the power-law relationship, da/dN = C (?K)m. Fatigue-crack growth in each of the steels was accelerated by the salt-water environment. However, the environmental response varied significantly, depending upon the material and the ?K level. The lower-toughness steel was less affected by environment, and environmental effects in all the steels diminished with increasing ?K levels. No correlation was observed between fatigue-crack-growth behavior in the salt-water environment and the stress-corrosion-cracking parameter (K Iscc) obtained on the same materials.

Book excerpt: Corrosion and Corrosion Protection of Wind Power Structures in Marine Environments: Volume 1: Introduction and Corrosive Loads offers the first comprehensive review on corrosion and corrosion protection of offshore wind power structures. The book provides extensive discussion on corrosion phenomena and types in different marine corrosion zones, including the modeling of corrosion processes and interactions between corrosion and structural stability. The book addresses important design issues, namely materials selection relative to performance in marine environments, corrosion allowance, and constructive design. Active and passive corrosion protection measures are emphasized, with special sections on cathodic corrosion protection and the use of protective coatings. Seawater related issues associated with cathodic protection, such as calcareous deposit formation, hydrogen formation and fouling, are discussed. With respect to protective coatings, the book considers for the first time complete loading scenarios, including corrosive loads, mechanical loads, and special loads, and covers a wide range of coating materials. Problems associated with fouling and bacterial-induced corrosion are extensively reviewed. The book closes with a chapter on recent developments in maintenance strategies, inspection techniques, and repair technologies. The book is of special interest to materials scientists, materials developers, corrosion engineers, maintenance engineers, civil engineers, steel work designers, mechanical engineers, marine engineers. Offshore wind power is an emerging renewable technology and a key factor for a cleaner environment. Offshore wind power structures are situated in a demanding and challenging marine environment. The structures are loaded in a complex way, including mechanical loads and corrosive loads. Corrosion is one of the major limiting factors to the reliability and performance of the technology. Maintenance and repair of corrosion protection systems are particularly laborious and costly.
