Book excerpt: Me, Myself and MS is a true-to-life, heartwarming, and inspirational memoir that deals with what I went through and go through on a day-to-day, more specifically, a minute-to-minute basis in the battle of living with multiple sclerosis. This book will give a detailed description of my life from the moment of diagnoses to the many symptoms, medications, treatments, and some of the possible side effects. It is also a portrayal of the tears, laughter, triumphs, and tribulations that are a part of living with multiple sclerosis. Me, Myself and MS is not only targeted for people living with multiple sclerosis, but it is also for anyone dealing with lifes challenges and who are in need of a little inspiration. It makes a statement that the choice is yours. You can submit to your illness and hardships, or you can see these challenges as a new chapter in your life and move forward fighting tooth and nail with each new blow that is thrown you way. With two hundred people diagnosed weekly with multiple sclerosis, this inspirational book will help ease some of the fears about what you might go through. It is meant to encourage and guide those that are going through this journey or any challenges in their lives. In my family, there are four of us living with multiple sclerosis, and I was the first to be diagnosed. There was no one that I could turn to for advice as to what to expect. I hadnt even heard the words multiple sclerosis or what this illness was, so I wanted to pass along that although you have been given a new life/way of living, you can/will survive your diagnoses. This is a journeyone that I have been on for twenty-three years and counting.

Book excerpt: This document reports the oral and written testimony submitted at a Congressional hearing on how job training works--how effective employment training programs succeed and how that success is measured. The hearing was based on a General Accounting Office study that found four hallmarks of effective job training: individual commitment, removal of personal barriers to employment, a focus on basic employment skills, and a close connection to the realities of the local job market. Witnesses included persons who had completed job training programs, operators of nonprofit organizations that conduct job training, government officials involved in job training programs, and representatives of corporations such as Marriott International that conduct extensive job training programs. The testimony focused on the need to coordinate efforts of job training programs so that potential participants do not have to work through a maze of hundreds of agencies. The witnesses pointed out that even well-educated people and professionals in the human services field have a hard time determining which agencies can help them and how to find those agencies. Some of the witnesses endorsed one-stop services such as those supported in the GI Bill and in a proposed Career Bill. (KC)

Book excerpt: Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf's fourth novel, offers the reader an impression of a single June day in London in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of parliament, is preparing to give an evening party, while the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith hears the birds in Regent's Park chattering in Greek. There seems to be nothing, except perhaps London, to link Clarissa and Septimus. She is middle-aged and prosperous, with a sheltered happy life behind her; Smith is young, poor, and driven to hatred of himself and the whole human race. Yet both share a terror of existence, and sense the pull of death. The world of Mrs Dalloway is evoked in Woolf's famous stream of consciousness style, in a lyrical and haunting language which has made this, from its publication in 1925, one of her most popular novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is an established and successful program of treatment. Once a diagnosis of MS meant inevitable decline and disability. Now thousands of people around the world are living healthy, active lives on the Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis recovery program. Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis explains the nature of MS and outlines an evidence-based 7 step program for recovery. Professor George Jelinek devised the program from an exhaustive analysis of medical research when he was first diagnosed with MS in 1999. It has been refined through major ongoing international clinical studies under Professor Jelinek's leadership, examining the lifestyles of several thousand people with MS world-wide and their health outcomes. Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is invaluable for anyone recently diagnosed with MS, living with MS for years, or with a family member with MS. It makes an ideal resource for doctors treating people with MS. 'I would have no hesitation in recommending Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis to my patients, but also to my friends and colleagues.' Professor Gavin Giovannoni, MBBCh, PhD, FCP (S.A., Neurol.), FRCP, FRCPath, Chair of Neurology, Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry 'Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis combines hard scientific evidence with practical advice and compassion. It will be of benefit to nearly everybody affected by MS and I heartily recommend it.' Dr Peter Fisher FRCP , Physician to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and Director of Research, Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2001 Ray and Pat Browne National Book Award for Outstanding Textbook, given by the Popular Culture Association From Ken Burns's documentaries to historical dramas such as Roots, from A&E's Biography series to CNN, television has become the primary source for historical information for tens of millions of Americans today. Why has television become such a respected authority? What falsehoods enter our collective memory as truths? How is one to know what is real and what is imagined -- or ignored -- by producers, directors, or writers? Gary Edgerton and Peter Rollins have collected a group of essays that answer these and many other questions. The contributors examine the full spectrum of historical genres, but also institutions such as the History Channel and production histories of such series as The Jack Benny Show, which ran for fifteen years. The authors explore the tensions between popular history and professional history, and the tendency of some academics to declare the past "off limits" to nonscholars. Several of them point to the tendency for television histories to embed current concerns and priorities within the past, as in such popular shows as Quantum Leap and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The result is an insightful portrayal of the power television possesses to influence our culture.
