As before it is divided into easy-to-read sections with clear answers that sometimes encapsulate whole diseases. The four-part question format is retained in order to aid those intending to take Certificate or other exams in Travel Medicine. The correct answer to each question is that which is generally accepted as the best one. Nonetheless the reader may quibble with some answers and the author is always happy to accept sound advice and change accordingly. Travel Medicine has a broad canvas. It cuts across the boundaries of Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Tropical Medicine, Geographical Medicine, Aviation and Refugee Medicine. Because of this the few Textbooks we have Travel Medicine are large and difficult to digest. This little book attempts to set down in concise form the essential elements of Travel Medicine in a way that is easy to read yet challenging. These pages certainly invite the reader to share in excitement and wonder of this fascinating subject.

Few MCQ books, however, focus on the subjects that many candidates find difficult those in which they are least likely to have had good clinical experience. Infectious disease, haematology and clinical chemistry are three such subjects. Candidates feel uneasy about tackling MCQs in these areas, and these questions often become the deciders leading to success or failure. This new book from Galvani et al contains 150 five-part MCQs with full answers and explanations, for these three difficult areas. Original MCQs of MRCP level, tried and tested on SHOs Concentrates on three difficult areas in which many candidates will not have had specific experience Full explanations allow testing and learning/revision to be simultaneous

Book excerpt: Academic geriatnclans are always looking for an improved objective, quantifiable measure of biological ageing in humans to replace that unphysiological and arbitrary scale 'years survived'. The MCQ may be the nearest we have come yet to achieving this Holy Grail. An individual's facility with the setting and answering of MCQs separates the medical genera tions more surely than years. I am only grateful I was educated in a less rigorous but perhaps more 'gentlemanly' era. If one appeared before an examiner neatly dressed with clean finger nails and the examination scripts were literate essays written in fountain pen then you were in - or so it seemed. For the past 20 years we have been evolving towards much more objective and rigorous assessment of knowledge and understanding of medicine of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This process has been exemplified by the evolution of what is now the seemingly ubiquitous MCQ. When initially presented as objective and quantifiable measures of clinical knowledge MCQs were the subject of scorn - how could they assess the art of medicine - the grey areas of clinical decision making? However they very rapidly overcame this antediluvian scepticism and I believe they have had an effect well beyond the limited area of competence measurement. They have induced or at the very least contributed to a shift towards a more rigorous, dare one say more scientific, approach to clinical medicine.
