Download or read book Exploring Intervention written by Jan Kühnemund and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on nine case studies and innovative empirical material from various regions of Uganda, this edited volume focuses on the interplay between humanitarian, economic and academic intervention on the one hand and mobility, permanent transit and (re-)settlement on the other – not least against the background of the versatile trajectories of flight and displacement and cultural practices that can be observed in the diverse environment of the country. In doing so, on a methodological level, this volume casts light on multifaceted processes of academic entanglements and knowledge production, on self-positioning processes of the researcher and the various role conflicts connected to research in complex settings.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Uganda written by Joseph Kasule and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda is one of the most fascinating countries in Africa. Situated in the middle of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, it is home to diverse flora and fauna. Little wonder Winston Churchill famously named it “the Pearl of Africa”. Neighbored by South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, Uganda claims the source of the River Nile and a larger share of Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Uganda’s capital, Kampala is famous for hosting many international conferences and summits including the 2007 Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting. Uganda is witnessing rapid development, overseen by Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni who has served as president since 1986, making him the longest serving leader in Uganda. Museveni came to power on the backdrop of a 5-year guerilla struggle that toppled the regimes of Milton Obote and the military junta of Tito Okello Lutwa. Historical Dictionary of Uganda, Second Edition, covers the history of Uganda using a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and a bibliography. The dictionary section covers many entries on politics, economy, foreign affairs, religion, society, culture, and important personalities. The book provides a quick access for researchers, students, tourists, and anyone interesting in learning about Uganda.

Book Synopsis Religiosity on University Campuses in Africa by : Abdoulaye Sounaye
Download or read book Religiosity on University Campuses in Africa written by Abdoulaye Sounaye and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines religiosity on university campuses in Sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on both individuals and organized groups, the contributions open a window onto how religion becomes a factor, affects social interactions, is experienced and mobilized by various actors. It brings together case studies from various disciplinary backgrounds (anthropology, sociology, history, religious studies, literature) and theoretical orientations to illustrate the significance of religiosity in recent developments on university campuses. It pays a particular attention to religion-informed activism and contributes a fresh analysis of processes that are shaping both the experience of being student and the university campus as a moral space. Last but not least, it sheds light onto the ways in which the campus becomes a site of a reformulation of both religiosity and sociality.
Download or read book Uganda written by Philip Briggs and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2016-11-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bradt Guide to Uganda, now more than 500-pages long, is the definitive travel handbook to this wonderful but oft-neglected destination, not only providing comprehensive background information to its varied national parks, towns and other cultural attractions, but also including detailed reviews of the ever-growing selection of world-class lodges and budget hotels that service them. Uganda boasts the most varied – and arguably the most exciting – safari circuit in Africa. The lush montane forests of Bwindi protect the world’s largest remaining population of mountain gorillas, many of which have become habituated to tourists and can be tracked to within a few metres on foot. Elsewhere, Queen Elizabeth National Park, set below the snow-capped Mountains of the Moon, is renowned for its tree-climbing lions and abundant buffaloes. Elephants abound in Murchison Falls National Park, coursed through by a dramatic stretch of the White Nile dense with hippos, crocodiles and waterfowl, while Kibale Forest offers superb chimpanzee tracking as well as the opportunity to see ten other monkey species in their natural jungle habitat. For birders, an astonishing checklist of more than 1,000 species – in a country similar in size to Great Britain or the state of Oregon ¬– includes dozens of Western rainforest specials difficult to see elsewhere, as well as the iconic great blue turaco and shoebill. Philip Briggs is the world’s foremost writer of guidebooks to Africa. He has been exploring the continent’s highways, byways and backwaters for over 30 years.

Book Synopsis Rapid Urbanisation, Urban Food Deserts and Food Security in Africa by : Jonathan Crush
Download or read book Rapid Urbanisation, Urban Food Deserts and Food Security in Africa written by Jonathan Crush and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates food security and the implications of hyper-urbanisation and rapid growth of urban populations in Africa. By means of a series of case studies involving African cities of various sizes, it argues that, while the concept of food security holds value, it needs to be reconfigured to fit the everyday realities and distinctive trajectory of urbanisation in the region. The book goes on to discuss the urban context, where food insecurity is more a problem of access and changing consumption patterns than of insufficient food production. In closing, it approaches food insecurity in Africa as an increasingly urban problem that requires different responses from those applied to rural populations.

Book Synopsis Transforming Urban Food Systems in Secondary Cities in Africa by : Liam Riley
Download or read book Transforming Urban Food Systems in Secondary Cities in Africa written by Liam Riley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries across Africa are rapidly transitioning from rural to urban societies. The UN projects that 60% of people living in Africa will be in urban areas by 2050, with the urban population on the continent tripling over the next 50 years. The challenge of building inclusive and sustainable cities in the context of rapid urbanization is arguably the critical development issue of the 21st Century and creating food secure cities is key to promoting health, prosperity, equity, and ecological sustainability. The expansion of Africa’s urban population is taking place largely in secondary cities: these are broadly defined as cities with fewer than half a million people that are not national political or economic centres. The implications of secondary urbanization have recently been described by the Cities Alliance as “a real knowledge gap”, requiring much additional research not least because it poses new intellectual challenges for academic researchers and governance challenges for policy-makers. International researchers coming from multiple points of view including food studies, urban studies, and sustainability studies, are starting to heed the call for further research into the implications for food security of rapidly growing secondary cities in Africa. This book will combine this research and feature comparable case studies, intersecting trends, and shed light on broad concepts including governance, sustainability, health, economic development, and inclusivity. This is an open access book.

Book Synopsis Global Urbanization by : Eugenie L. Birch
Download or read book Global Urbanization written by Eugenie L. Birch and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in history, the majority of the world's population lives in urban areas. Much of this urbanization has been fueled by the rapidly growing cities of the developing world, exemplified most dramatically by booming megacities such as Lagos, Karachi, and Mumbai. In the coming years, as both the number and scale of cities continue to increase, the most important matters of social policy and economic development will necessarily be urban issues. Urbanization, across the world but especially in Asia and Africa, is perhaps the critical issue of the twenty-first century. Global Urbanization surveys essential dimensions of this growth and begins to formulate a global urban agenda for the next half century. Drawing from many disciplines, the contributors tackle issues ranging from how cities can keep up with fast-growing housing needs to the possibilities for public-private partnerships in urban governance. Several essays address the role that cutting-edge technologies such as GIS software, remote sensing, and predictive growth models can play in tracking and forecasting urban growth. Reflecting the central importance of the Global South to twenty-first-century urbanism, the volume includes case studies and examples from China, India, Uganda, Kenya, and Brazil. While the challenges posed by large-scale urbanization are immense, the future of human development requires that we find ways to promote socially inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and resilient infrastructure. The timely and relevant scholarship assembled in Global Urbanization will be of great interest to scholars and policymakers in demography, geography, urban studies, and international development.
