Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carols, Hymns, and Songs In 7esu, Fount of Pleasure, there is very little borrowed, though the ideas are substantially the same. Similar remarks might be made of several others. Some of them, however, have no connection with any German original. But in each case the words have been written expressly for that one particular mel ody, and each verse has been fitted to that melody while it was in the act of composition. The only way to test a Hymn, is, not merely to read it silently, or even aloud, but to sing it, over and over again, to its own tune. There is nothing in this little book that has not been abundantly subjected to this test before being offered to the public. The fact, that in part of my work I have written words for other people's music, in another part have written music for other people's words, while in the rest I furnish both words and music myself, is some evidence that I have bestowed equal care and labor upon bot/z the things which are essential to good Hymnody. The reason why we have so much of unsatisfactory material thrust upon the Church, is that, for the most part, the writers of the words have known little about music, and the writers of music have had little taste or power in the poetic field, and therefore there was no felt organic connection betwixt the two. In the arrangement of yesu, Fount of Pleasure, I have ventured to harmonize it in the Dorian mode, instead of the usual D minor, which hardly seems to suit the character of the words as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from May Carols The wisdom of the Church, which consecrates the fleeting seasons of Time to the interests of Eternity, has dedicated the month of May (the birthday festival, as it were, of Creation) to her who was ever destined in the Divine Counsels to become the Mother of her Creator. It belongs to her, of course, as she is the representative of the Incarnation, and its practical exponent to a world but too apt to forget what it professes to hold. The following Poems, written in her honour, are an attempt to set forth, though but in mere outline, each of them some one of the great Ideas or essential Principles embodied in that all-embracing Mystery. On a topic so comprehensive, converse statements, at one time illustrating the highest excellence compatible with mere creaturely existence, at another, the infinite distance between the chief of creatures and the Creator, may seem, at first sight, and to some eyes, contradictory, although in reality, mutually correlative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Christmas songs we love to sing lie fascinating stories that will enrich your holiday celebration. Taking you inside the nativity of over thirty favorite songs and carols, Ace Collins introduces you to people you’ve never met, stories you’ve never heard, and meanings you’d never have imagined. The next time you and your family sing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," you’ll have a new understanding of its message and popular roots. You’ll discover how "Angels from the Realms of Glory," with its sublime lyrics and profound theology, helped usher in a quiet revolution in worship. You’ll learn the strange history of the haunting and powerful "O Holy Night," including the song’s surprising place in the history of modern communications. And you’ll step inside the life of Mark Lowry and find out how he came to pen the words to the contemporary classic "Mary, Did You Know?"Still other songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" trace back to mysterious origins--to ninth-century monks, nameless clergy, and unknown commoners of ages past. Joining hands with such modern favorites as "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song," they are part of the legacy of inspiration, faith, tears, love, and spiritual joy that is Christmas. From the rollicking appeal of "Jingle Bells" to the tranquil beauty of "Silent Night," the great songs of Christmas contain messages of peace, hope, and truth. Each in its own way expresses a facet of God’s heart and celebrates the birth of his greatest gift to the world--Jesus, the most wonderful Christmas Song of all.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carol: A Book of Religious Songs for the Sunday School and the Home IN preparing this book the existing musical condition of our Sunday schools has been carefully considered, and the compilation Of tunes and poems, both original and selected, has been made with special reference to their capacity and needs. This has led to the inclusion Of a few compositions which a stricter musical and liturgical taste might have rejected, but which meet the requirements of the varied constituency to which this little work is dedicated, and will give to it a wider usefulness. NO excuse is offered for the retention Of old and favorite airs and hymns in this book. Usually a tune is old because it is good, or has in it some quality which meets a universal need, and thus enables it to stand the test of time, and sift down through the vast accumulation of musical matter produced by the centuries. Even if Old to us it will be new} to the generations of children ever appearing on the scene, and may inspire their hearts, as it -has strengthened ours. In some instances in this work, other, or entirely new words have been wedded to familiar melodies, which, it is believed, will impart to them freshness and increased charm.
