Book excerpt: An Englishwoman marries a Sicilian-American soldier during World War II and then vanishes from his life in this story of star-crossed love and deadly vendettas They meet and fall in love in Palermo during World War II. She’s an English nurse, the daughter of a Sussex country doctor. He’s a wounded Sicilian-American soldier. When they marry, Angela Drummond is pregnant, but Steven Falconi will not be with her the day their son is born. Believing Angela to be the tragic victim of a German bomb, Steven returns to New York to take his place as heir apparent of his Mafia family. But he never stops mourning the loss of his love, even when he marries Clara Fabrizzi in a practical union of dynasties. The pampered, wildly jealous daughter of a powerful don, Clara will let nothing stand in the way of her uncontrollable passion for her husband. Then one day, Steven sees a ghost. Reminiscent of the works of Mario Puzo, The Scarlet Thread journeys across three continents and two decades to tell a story about the terrible price of power and the incalculable cost of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The republic of the mind... It might have been a drug, it might have been something you scored in pub toilets, but it wasn't. It was better than that... One day everybody was going to be there. In this new edition of James Robertson's shorter fiction, nothing is quite what it seems. From a dysfunctional safari park to an abandoned mental hospital, from a flat overrun by frogs to a South Dakota reservation or a future Scotland riven by ethnic cleansing, the settings of these stories are both nightmarish and real, and the characters who inhabit them often heroic even in defeat. Angry, philosophical, funny and humane, James Robertson's stories explore the friendships strong in adversity, marriages heading for the rocks, and the lonely truths of everyday life, with the same deftness of touch that has brought critical acclaim for novels such as And the Land Lay Still and The Testament of Gideon Mack. This is a collection that will live long in your mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period between the two world wars, the Independent Labour Party (ILP) was the main voice of radical democratic socialism in Great Britain. Founded in 1893, the ILP had, since 1906, operated under the aegis of the Labour Party. As that party edged nearer to power following World War I, forming minority governments in 1924 and again in 1929, the ILP found its own identity under siege. On one side stood those who wanted the ILP to subordinate itself to an increasingly cautious and conventional Labour leadership; on the other stood those who felt that the ILP should throw its lot in with the Communist Party of Great Britain. After the ILP disaffiliated from Labour in 1932 in order to pursue a new, “revolutionary” policy, it was again torn, this time between those who wanted to merge with the Communists and those who saw the ILP as their more genuinely revolutionary and democratic rival. At the opening of the 1930s, the ILP boasted five times the membership of the Communist Party, as well as a sizeable contingent of MPs. By the end of the decade, having tested the possibility of creating a revolutionary party in Britain almost to the point of its own destruction, the ILP was much diminished—although, unlike the Communists, it still retained a foothold in Parliament. Despite this reversal of fortunes, during the 1930s—years that witnessed the ascendancy of both Stalin and Hitler—the ILP demonstrated an unswerving commitment to democratic socialist thinking. Drawing extensively on the ILP’s Labour Leader and other contemporary left-wing newspapers, as well as on ILP publications and internal party documents, Bullock examines the debates and ideological battles of the ILP during the tumultuous interwar period. He argues that the ILP made a lasting contribution to British politics in general, and to the modern Labour Party in particular, by preserving the values of democratic socialism during the interwar period.

Book excerpt: "The three must be one before the Dominion can truly begin" 18 months after the execution of the rebel leader in Metro City, the world holds its breath as the Sentience Program nears completion. If successful, BEAST-the world wide computer system that helps the United Earth Foundation (UEF) run the affairs of the planet- will gain human-like understanding of its subjects and be able to reason and think like a living mind. The CEO of the UEF and his followers prepare for this new weapon while the 'Remainers' step up their efforts to resist the true nature of those who now rule this world since the time of the 'Great Disaster' that left the population of Earth severly reduced. A Science Fiction telling of the Book of Revelation, the story continues. The paths split and grows more complicated for Carl Jordan and Thomas Thorpe as each begins the work their personal Gods has set before them. Carl preaches resistance to those who will not comply with the world directives, while Thomas brings a simpler message to the ones who refuse to pledge their loyalty to the Order. Join or die.

Designed and arranged according to the DSM-IV diagnostic categories, each chapter addresses the short-term treatment of a specific condition or patient population. Starting from the premise that psychodynamically trained clinicians already possess the requisite skills to conduct short-term treatment, the editors demonstrate how to adapt these skills to a time-limited approach.
