Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Photography by Hannah Klein. MAXIMUM SUNLIGHT is a timely and incisive portrait of the people, communities, anxieties, and contradictions that make up what many think of--now, more than ever, after the 2016 election--as rural white America. Told through a series of candid interviews and sharp observations of town life in tiny Tonopah, Nevada, journalist Meagan Day and photographer Hannah Klein create a book that is both traditional reportage and searching portrait of this eccentric and yet archetypal desert town. Day, a journalist and editor, writes with Didion's penetrating keenness for detail and Stegner's sense of the beauty and spareness of life in the west--illustrated throughout by Klein's striking color photo-spreads of desolate vistas, dilapidated houses, and cluttered shelves of clown figurines and neo-Nazi paraphernalia. The unexpected brightness and shocking depth of color in the photographs juxtapose the harshness and expanse of Tonopah's exteriors with the sharpness and peculiarity of its interiors. Tonopah is a town of former skinheads, drunks, pawnshop owners, drifters, lifers, day laborers, military contractors, and 4H moms. It is a town of casino bars, a highly classified military base, UFO sightings, ghosts of dead miners, and a massive solar energy plant. It's most notable attraction is a clown-themed motel next to a 19th century miners' graveyard. Written in the years leading up to the 2016 election, the book emerges as a vital and nuanced portrait of white identity and experience in an era in which rural isolationism and white nationalism have been thrust into the national spotlight.

Book excerpt: The emergence of urbanism in Iraq occurred under the distinctive climatic conditions of the Mesopotamian plain; rainy winters and extremely hot summers profoundly affected the formation and development of these early cities. Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities explores the relationship between society, culture and lived experience through the way in which sunlight was manipulated in the urban built environment. Light is approached as both a physical phenomenon, which affects comfort and the practical usability of space, and as a symbolic phenomenon rich in social and religious meaning. Through the reconstruction of ancient urban light environments, to the extent possible from the archaeological remains, the location, timing and meaning of activities within early Mesopotamian cities become accessible. Sunlight is shown to have influenced the formation and symbolism of urban architecture and shaped the sensory experience of urban life. From cities as part of the sunlit landscape, this work progresses to consider city forms as a whole and then to the examination of architectural types; residential, sacred and palatial. Architectural analysis is complemented by analysis of contemporary textual sources, along with iconographic and artefactual evidence. The cities under detailed examination are limited to those on the Mesopotamian plain, focusing on the Early Dynastic periods up to the end of the second millennium BC.This volume demonstrates the utility of light as a tool with which to analyse, not just ancient Mesopotamian settlements, but the built environment of any past society, especially where provision of, or protection from sunlight critically affects life. The active influence of sunlight is demonstrated within Mesopotamian cities at every scale of analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be used as a textbook in undergraduate civil engineering and construction courses to introduce cutting edge mechanical, electrical, and computer science topics that are needed for civil and construction engineers to collaborate in inter-disciplinary automation projects. Part I introduces the basics of hardware and software technologies that are needed for implementing automation in buildings and construction. The content begins with the fundamental concepts and uses practical examples to bring out the benefits of automation through case studies that are easy to understand. No other book uniformly treats the subject of automation within the context of buildings and construction activities. While the technology needed for these two application domains are similar, the unifying principles are not well recognized. This book will bring out the fundamental principles that could form the basis of application to these two domains. For example, it will become clear that sensors, actuators, and controllers, along with smart control strategies could be used for automating tasks within buildings and on construction sites. Part II of the book will introduce key advances in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence that are significant for the intelligent control of buildings and construction equipment. Control algorithms and techniques for data analytics are explained in a form that is appropriate for non-computer science students. Each chapter contains several hands-on exercises meant to apply the principles that are covered. These include numerical problems as well as design and analysis examples. This new textbook: • Introduces hardware and software needed for automating engineering tasks • Presents examples of applications in the control of building systems • Illustrates of the use of automation for improving construction processes • Provides a lucid introduction to advanced computing concepts, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and control algorithms to construction and engineering students. It is sure to be essential reading for a growing number of courses in smart construction, building automation, robotics, intelligent buildings, and construction 4.0. Supplementary material including answers to exercises in the book will be provided on the author’s website: https://bennyraphael.com/book2022/
