Book excerpt: An analysis of long simply-supported rectangular plates with straight unloaded edges uniformly shortened beyond the elastic instability points into the plastic range was undertaken. The inclusion of wavelength effects is shown to be a significant factor in establishing maximum strength criteria for postbuckled plates. The present results are shown to be in excellent agreement with experiment and serve to explain the reason for the absence of clearly-defined maximum load criteria for postbuckled square plates. In addition, the analysis results offer a plausible explanation for the increased maximum strength performance obtained with several tests on beryllium plates considered to be simply-supported, when compared with an essentially material-independent maximum strength criterion established for plates constructed of materials which possess relatively high biaxial ductility. Book excerpt: The postbuckling and maximum strength analyses of uniformly shortened, simply supported rectangular plates with straight unloaded edges are obtained by employing Reissner's variational principle in conjunction with a deformation theory of plasticity. The results are compared to (1) experimental data for a rectangular plate in which the test conditions basically reflect the boundary conditions specified in the present analyses, and (2) a potential energy solution that correlates well with experiment, but in which the effect of waveform change on the average stress carried by the plate is accounted for only in a gross manner and the effect of small local unloading is neglected. Good agreement with experiment establishes confidence in the new approach and indicates that the simplified technique utilized in the potential energy solution to compensate for waveform changes may be employed for engineering purposes. It was assumed that the material deforms due to linear elasticity and steady state creep, and creep strain rate is given by the power law. When a fixed uniaxial load is applied to the plate in such a way that the load remains uniformly distributed during the buckling process, the governing equations indicate that a finite time exists after which the lateral deformations of the plate become unbounded. Simple, closed form expressions for this critical time are derived for various values of the creep exponent, and for the case where primary creep plays an important role. (Author).
