The college man acquires by virtue of is education not special privileges, but special duties, and this is as it should be. Every man who has been able to get better mental training than his fellows should feel an always increasing burden of responsibility for his actions, and should be ever ready to do more than even his full duty by his state. The squaring of one's deeds with one's words is the quality above all others which we should exact from public men. His health was not good, but Mr. Cutler, in a letter to the present writer, says that while at school he then showed "the alert mind, retentive memory, and earnestness of purpose which has since marked his public life and his private life." He entered Harvard University in 1876, graduating in 1880, and prepared for the bar at Columbia University. He was elected to the legislature of New York in 1882, in which he served three terms, and it is said that during that time he introduced and carried through more important city legislation than was ever brought about by any one preceding him. In 1884, through domestic troubles and ill health, Roosevelt abandoned his political work in New York and went to North Dakota, where he had purchased a cattle-ranch of considerable size. Here the continued out-of-door life brought him health and strength. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compilation of the Messages and Speeches of Theodore Roosevelt: 1901-1905 There live honest men who might be described as having their honesty under control. Theirs is a kind of honesty that is neither head long nor inveterate. It is tame, tractable; it will not carry them to expensive extremes. As they say of a well-broken horse, it will stand without hitching. The Roosevelt honesty is the unbroken Opposite of these. In all things it is final. It is militant, wears a sword, and rises stubbornly loyal to each occasion. There be folk pliant to occasion; they are secretive before they are brave, and have a genius for merger. The jackrabbit, when threatened, can so accommodate himself with a condition as to seem to sink into the bare, brown earth; the tree-toad will turn the color of whatever he rests upon. This is for their safety. There be men who can bow instantly to events. Feeling the helm of some sudden new exigency, they will turn at full speed in half their length. Machiavelli speaks highly of this ability to ignobly match the hour one lives in, and preaches from it as from the very text of political success. Still that gift of convenience is the mark of the politician aiming at self-interest, rather than of the statesman who considers the broad advantage of a world. It belongs with one who strives to match his day. Mr. Roose. Velt strives to make his day match him, and his integrities are never supple nor convenient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt's Letters to His Children Most of the letters in this volume were written by Theodore Roosevelt to his children during a period of more than twenty years. A few others are included that he wrote to friends or relatives about the children. He began to write to them in their early childhood, and continued to do SO regularly till they reached maturity. Whenever he was separated from them, in the Spanish War, or on a hunting trip, or because they were at school, he sent them these messages of constant thought and love, for they were never for a mo ment out of his mind and heart. Long before they were able to read he sent them what they with crude drawings Of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For such a purpose few lives will be more useful than that of Roosevelt. If this book stimulates among the present and future generations Of young Americans an interest in this great man's life and leadership and in his ideals for democracy practically applied, it will have fulfilled my purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Presidential Messages of Theodore Roosevelt: 1902-1904 An honest man sent to lie abroad for the common wealth, - still less can he use language for the purpose of concealing thought; If he speaks at all he must per force say what he thinks, and thus it comes to pass that men may know him as he is, a knowledge very important just now to the people of the United States. In daily life, there is nothing so unpleasant as pretence, nothing which is so restful as reality. If we know that a man or woman is real and not a sham we can bear easily with many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 12: Memorial Edition In his preface he says, It is to me a labor of love to write of the great deeds Of the border people, and then he adds something which is still more significant, For a number of years I spent most of my time on the fron tier and lived and worked like any other frontiersman, a fact which it is important to keep in mind, for those experiences gave him a special insight into the qualities and daily habits of the pioneers he had set himself to describe. A little farther on he adds: The men who have shared in the fast vanishing frontier life of the present feel a peculiar sympathy with the already long Vanished frontier life of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 14 I speak of Africa and golden joys the joy of wandering through lonely lands; the joy of hunt ing the mighty and terrible lords of the wilderness, the cunning, the wary, and the grim. In these greatest of the world's great hunting grounds there are mountain peaks whose snows are dazzling under the equatorial sun; swamps where the slime oozes and bubbles and {esters in the steaming heat; lakes like seas; skies that burn above deserts where the iron desolation is shrouded from view by the wavering mockery of the mirage; vast grassy plains where palms and thorn-trees fringe the dwindling streams; mighty rivers rush ing out of the heart of the continent through the sadness of endless marshes; forests of gorgeous beauty, where death broods in the dark and silent depths.
