Book excerpt: In the summer of 2009, Triple Candie presented Maurizio Cattelan Is Dead: Life & Work, 1960-2009, the first retrospective of the Italian artist's work. A year later, the exhibition was installed at Deste in Athens. The wall texts were based on information gleaned by Triple Candie during their research and included intentionally re-reported errors from the original sources, uncorrected. By presenting that which becomes lost in the disconnect between artist and admirer, curator and critic, through the process of retelling and circulating information, the exhibitions, in Harlem and Athens--and now the book--ask the public to examine how one's own perceptions are influenced by the mediums through which we view artwork. Edited and published by Triple Candie, the book intends, as the exhibitions did, to question narrative reliability. At the time of both shows and the publication of the book, the artist was still very much alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively introduction to the rich and diverse history of contemporary art over the past 60 years—from Modernism and minimalism to artists like Andy Warhol and Marina Abramović. Accessible and with lavish illustrations, this is the perfect gift for art history fans and anyone looking for a new, more inclusive perspective on ‘the old boys’ club.’ Encountering a work of contemporary art, a viewer might ask, "What does it mean?" "Is it really art?" and "Why does it cost so much?" These are not the questions that E. H. Gombrich set out to answer in his magisterial The Story of Art. Contemporary art seems totally unlike what came before it, departing from the road map supplied by Raphael, Dürer, Rembrandt, and other European masters. In The Story of Contemporary Art, Tony Godfrey picks up where Gombrich left off, offering a lively introduction to contemporary art that stretches from Andy Warhol’s Brillo boxes to Marina Abramović’s performance art to today’s biennale circuit and million-dollar auctions. Godfrey, a curator and writer on contemporary art, chronicles important developments in pop art, minimalism, conceptualism, installation art, performance art, and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of emergency, according to thinkers such as Carl Schmidt, Walter Benjamin, and Giorgio Agamben, is at the heart of any theory of politics. But today the problem is not the crises that we do confront, which are often used by governments to legitimize themselves, but the ones that political realism stops us from recognizing as emergencies, from widespread surveillance to climate change to the systemic shocks of neoliberalism. We need a way of disrupting the existing order that can energize radical democratic action rather than reinforcing the status quo. In this provocative book, Santiago Zabala declares that in an age where the greatest emergency is the absence of emergency, only contemporary art’s capacity to alter reality can save us. Why Only Art Can Save Us advances a new aesthetics centered on the nature of the emergency that characterizes the twenty-first century. Zabala draws on Martin Heidegger’s distinction between works of art that rescue us from emergency and those that are rescuers into emergency. The former are a means of cultural politics, conservers of the status quo that conceal emergencies; the latter are disruptive events that thrust us into emergencies. Building on Arthur Danto, Jacques Rancière, and Gianni Vattimo, who made aesthetics more responsive to contemporary art, Zabala argues that works of art are not simply a means of elevating consumerism or contemplating beauty but are points of departure to change the world. Radical artists create works that disclose and demand active intervention in ongoing crises. Interpreting works of art that aim to propel us into absent emergencies, Zabala shows how art’s ability to create new realities is fundamental to the politics of radical democracy in the state of emergency that is the present.

Book excerpt: Rachel Lyon's first novel – soon to be made into a major motion picture starring Zoë Kravitz and Thomasin McKenzie Lu Rile is a relentlessly focused young photographer struggling to make ends meet. Working three jobs, and worrying that the crumbling warehouse she lives in is being sold to developers, she is at a point of desperation. Until, by pure chance, Lu discovers she’s captured a tragedy in the background of a self portrait; a boy falling to his death. The photograph turns out to be the best work of art she’s ever made. It’s an image that could change her life – if she lets it. Set in early 90s Brooklyn on the brink of gentrification, Self-Portrait with Boy is a provocative commentary about the emotional dues that must be paid on the road to success. ‘Beautifully imagined and flawlessly executed’ Joyce Carol Oates ‘A sparkling debut’ New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: A concise introduction to the subversive career of contemporary art's great trickster New York- and Milan-based artist Maurizio Cattelan (born 1960) has provoked controversy and admiration alike with his subversive sculptures, installations and publications. His playful, satirical body of work--which includes Comedian (2019), a banana duct-taped to the wall at ArtBasel Miami Beach, and America (2016), the 18-karat gold toilet he later installed in the Guggenheim's restroom--reflects a pointed critique of institutional and cultural norms in the art world and society at large. Part of the 2000 Words series conceived by Massimiliano Gioni and published by DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art, this monograph contains an essay by Gioni that excerpts his previous writings on Cattelan, his close friend and collaborator.

Book excerpt: An updated edition of the definitive monograph on Maurizio Cattelan--provocateur, prankster and tragic poet of our times The Guggenheim Museum's sold-out publication Maurizio Cattelan: Allis returning to print. Hailed as a provocateur, prankster and tragic poet of our times, Maurizio Cattelan (born 1960) has created some of the most unforgettable images in contemporary art--most notoriously "The Ninth Hour" (1999), a sculpture of Pope John Paul II struck by a meteorite. Derived from popular culture, history and organized religion, Cattelan's subjects range widely, and his work, while bold and irreverent, is deadly serious in its scathing cultural critiques. The second edition of Allupdates the catalogue that accompanied the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's 2011-12 retrospective survey of the artist. For this exhibition, Cattelan sidestepped the totalizing effect of a retrospective by devising a site-specific installation in which his entire oeuvre was suspended from the oculus of the museum's iconic rotunda. This book offers an equally unique response to the conventions of the catalogue. It is a faux-leatherbound hardcover with gold stamping and thin paper that is designed to resemble an old textbook or bible. The volume details almost every work of Cattelan's from the late '80s to the present within a double-column page format, featuring full-color reproductions and accompanying entries. The revised edition describes the artist's return to art making after a five-year "retirement" with a special, ongoing project opening at the Guggenheim in May 2016. It also features a redesigned cover and installation images of the exhibition All. Nancy Spector has augmented her critical overview of Cattelan--which documents not only his artistic output but also his ongoing activities as a curator, editor and publisher--with a new coda. Since its original publication, Allhas become the Cattelan bible, and this revised edition exploring the latest chapter of the artist's influential career ensures it will remain the definitive source on his work for years to come.

Book excerpt: Made in L.A. 2020: a version brings together an intergenerational and interdisciplinary mix of artists, each of whom is contributing to L.A.'s vibrant art scene. Since its inception in 2012, the Hammer Museum's Made in L.A. biennial has brought together local artists from a wide range of discipline. Under the direction of co-curators Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler, the 2020 iteration will be no exception. The Hammer's Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, who has previously served with Performa and The Kitchen in New York, will assist in the organization of the 2020 biennial in the role of assistant curator for performance. Drawing inspiration from historical artist magazines, this book is not documentation of the artists' work, but rather serves as an additional venue for the exhibition. It includes images of the artists' studios, art made specifically for the pages of the book, as well as essays and conversations between artists and curators that weave together the conceptual through-lines of the show. This book is published in two different covers. Published with the Hammer Museum

Book excerpt: "Riotous Baroque" confronts pictures from the seventeenth century with art of the present day. The exhibition focuses on the "riotous" aspect and the proximity to life that is a recurring theme in the literature on the Baroque. The show wishes to extricate the concept of the Baroque from its conventional context within the history of style and to distance itself from formai artistic clichés. "Riotous Baroque" is not about pomp, ornament and gold, but about "Tributes to Precarious Vitality" - a vitality that is lived, rediscovered, lost, projected, and threatened by death.
