Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858 - 1924) was an American Post-Impressionist artist who worked in oil, watercolor, and monotype. He exhibited as a member of The Eight, though the delicacy of his compositions and mosaic-like beauty of his style differed from the artistic intentions and philosophy of the group.Prendergast's work was strongly associated from the beginning with leisurely scenes set on beaches and in parks. His early work was mostly in watercolor or monotype, and he produced over two hundred monotypes between 1895 and 1902. He also experimented with oil painting in the 1890s, but did not focus on that medium until the early 1900s.He developed early in his career and continued throughout his life to elaborate a highly personal style, with boldly contrasting, jewel-like colors, and flattened, pattern-like forms rhythmically arranged on a canvas. Forms were radically simplified and presented in flat areas of bright color. His paintings have been aptly described as tapestry-like or resembling mosaics.Prendergast exhibited at the Macbeth Galleries in 1908 with the short-lived association of artists known as "The Eight" because he supported their protest against the academic bias and restrictive exhibition policies of the powerful, conservative National Academy of Design. He believed in a "no jury, no prizes" openness that would allow independent or unconventional artists greater opportunities to find a wider, appreciative audience for their work. Ironically, this controversial exhibition, which acquired legendary status in American art history, is seen as a seminal moment in the public response to Ashcan realism, as that form of gritty urban representational art was the style practiced by five of the participants (Henri, Sloan, Luks, Shinn, and Glackens), but Prendergast has nothing in common, in style or content, with that school of painting. Prendergast was far more a Modernist than any of the other seven members of The Eight. His ties to The Eight did not necessarily help his reputation in the long run: "Prendergast's irrevocable association with The Eight left him stylistically isolated in genealogies of modern art." A true independent, he fits into no particular category of modern American art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York has always attracted artists--because it is electric with passion, endeavor, and hustle, and because they know they will find others of like mind there. The city is a vibrant center of the international art world; no wonder then that both resident and sojourning painters have long felt compelled to capture, interpret, and evoke the place on canvas. Bruce Weber faced a daunting amount of works for inclusion in Paintings of New York. But he chose well, producing a book that combines solid scholarship in history and the arts, warmly readable prose, and gorgeous color images. Artwork included by Piet Mondrian, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast, William Glackens, Georgia O'Keeffe, Childe Hassam, Raphael Soyer, Charles Frederic Ulrich, Albertus Del Orient Browere, Thomas Moran, Joseph Stella, Elsie Driggs, George Bellows, Otto Boetticher, Robert Henri, George Tooker, Francis Guy, Thomas Hart Benton, and Ben Shahn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful and beautiful look at how New England's summers have inspired American artists for decades With its stunning coastlines, mountains, lakes, forests, and scenic villages, New England has been an inspiration for American artists since the 19th century. This lively book considers the ways in which painters have responded to the region's summer beauty as well as to its social and cultural preoccupations and characteristics. Works by such artists as Fitz Henry Lane, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Maurice Prendergast, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, Hans Hofmann, Andrew Wyeth, Alex Katz, and Yvonne Jacquette depict subjects as wide ranging as the bucolic delights of farms and fields to the atmospheric light of New England's rugged coasts to the ethnic and social diversity of urban street life. Painting Summer in New England highlights the various styles and influences revealed in these works, including photographic realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, and abstraction. In addition, Trevor Fairbrother discusses the tremendous array of works covered by the concept of "painting" and the remarkable richness of thematic imagery that can be seen and understood as "New England." This engaging book is a delightful and invaluable resource for those who live in or are admirers of New England and American art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth look at Cézanne's powerful influence in shaping early 20th-century American art Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) is one of the great geniuses in the history of art, and his work has influenced a multitude of artists throughout Europe. Across the Atlantic, Cézanne's paintings had a similarly catalytic effect on artists emerging in the United States during the early 20th century. Cézanne and American Modernism is the first book devoted specifically to his impact on American art and its eager reception there. It shows how American painters and photographers cemented Cézanne's legacy by spreading their respect and admiration for his vision with their own art, writings, and exhibitions. Examining Cézanne's influence on more than a generation of American artists, this handsomely illustrated book features paintings and photography by Paul Strand, Marsden Hartley, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Demuth, Arshile Gorky, Charles Sheeler, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Maurice Prendergast, Morgan Russell, Max Weber, and many others. Cézanne's far-reaching transformative impact on each artist's aesthetic vision is explored, while extensive essays shed new light on a wide range of subjects from American collectors of his work and his shaping of modernism in the American West to the lasting resonance of his art on Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the development of modern American art through the works of its signature artists. This collection of rarely seen masterpieces from The Phillips Collection traces the development of American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism. During the Gilded Age, American artists like Julian Alden Weir, John Henry Twachtman, Ernest Lawson, and others developed landscape paintings which set the course for modern art in America. Revelations such as these are common within the pages of this book, which examines Duncan Phillips's interest in collecting and his promotion of living artists. Including essays by European and American experts, this publication of 68 works by 50 artists presents paintings by Maurice Prendergast, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Charles Sheeler, Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, and Richard Diebenkorn. Together these magnificent works tell the tale of a nation and artistic expression growing in confidence and diversity.
