Book excerpt: The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is developing a multiuse facility on the shore of Lake Erie near Toledo, OH, called Maumee Bay State Park. They have requested Corps assistance in designing and cost-sharing structures to halt the severe shoreline erosion which is occuring, so that the park can be developed to its full potential. A plan for accomplishing the stated purpose has been developed. It would provide a protective sand beach, 250 feet wide by 5,500 feet long over the western half of the park, stabilized by eight 300-foot offshore rubblemound breakwaters. The eastern half of the park would be protected by a rubblemound revetment placed along existing shoreline, while the drainage ditches would be protected by rubblemound jetties. The plan recommended for construction is environmentally acceptable, engineeringly and economically feasible, and has an estimated first cost of $11.8 million. In addition, ODNR plans an expenditure of $3.3 million for associate development which will include a bathhouse, parking, and lands. Average annual benefits for the Federal Project and associated ODNR development are $5.7 million. With total annual charges of $1.7 million, the benefit-to-cost ration is 3.41 to 1.0. ODNR is fully supportive of the Corps shoreline protection plan. There is no known opposition to this plan or to the planned park development of the State.
