Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of Paradigms in Word Formation: Theory and applications is on the relevance of paradigms for linguistic description. Paradigmatic organization has traditionally been considered an inherent feature of inflectional morphology, but research in the last decades clearly shows the existence of paradigms in word formation, especially in affixal derivation, often at the expense of other word-formation processes. This volume seeks to address the role that paradigms may play in the description of compounding, conversion and participles. This volume should be of interest to anyone specialized in the field of English morphology and word formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: I have chosen the topic of using pop songs in the EFL classroom because I strongly believe that working with pop songs is a highly motivational device. When I was a student at a lower and upper secondary school, listening to songs in English classes was my favourite activity. I have always wanted to be able to understand the lyrics of songs I listened to. Later, I realized that I have learned a lot from listening to pop songs and analyzing their lyrics. Therefore, in my diploma project, I would like to prove that using pop songs is a highly motivational device in teaching English with instructional value, and that students enjoy working with pop songs. The theoretical part of this diploma project is based on relevant sources of background literature. In the first two chapters, the use of songs is described with regard to motivation and the Multiple Intelligences Theory. The third and fourth chapter deal with the reasons for using songs and their classification. In the last two chapters of the theoretical part, pedagogical principles of using pop songs in class, as well as the pros and cons of teaching through pop songs are presented. The practical part is based on the findings of three surveys I have conducted in the field of using songs in the EFL classroom. In the first part of the research, I present an analysis of questionnaires which I distributed among English teachers at lower and upper secondary schools and grammar schools. In the second part of the research, I describe students ́ attitudes to pop song based lessons which I taught during my teaching practice at grammar schools. In the third part of the research, I analyze the types of songs presented in commonly used textbooks at lower and upper secondary schools. In addition, I present a self-developed teaching material containing a list of pop songs suitable for the EFL classroom. In the last part of the practical part, I answer the research questions and provide some implications for my own teaching. Book excerpt: This volume represents an outgrowth of the 7th international ATECR conference, which brought together researchers and educators from fields as diverse as language teaching in a variety of contexts, corpus linguistics and literary studies. The contributions in this volume show— despite their diversity—a strong common denominator: an aim to bundle efforts and unify parameters in order to optimize English Language Teaching as a world-wide endeavor. Thus, for our teaching it can only be beneficial when linguists talk to literary-minded teachers or methodology specialists investigate whether their theoretical underpinnings make their way into practice by talking to language instructors or language service providers. In general, the authors present a multifaceted picture of the English Language Teaching context with themselves as practitioners but also as investigators and researchers at the same time. The research that reflects back on their teaching thus creates a force-feedback loop not only for the investigating scholar but also for the practicing instructor who reapplies his/her knowledge after failed or suboptimal attempts as evidenced by the data.

Dále zkoumá role, které výslovnostní model plní v obou prostředích. Úvodní část práce předkládá diachronní i synchronní teoretický rámec, který vychází z bohaté současné i historické odborné literatury a analyzuje RP s využitím sociolingvistických pojmů, především z oblasti jazykové preskripce a standardizace. Praktická část je tvořena výzkumem, jenž byl proveden pomocí internetové stránky s 18 nahrávkami a doplňujícím dotazníkem. Tyto nahrávky byly evaluovány 20 anglickými a 20 českými respondenty. Výzkum se zabývá také sociolingvistickými kategoriemi, které pomáhají vytvářet ideový konstrukt spisovnosti.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Millions of people have fallen in love with Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face—who shows us that kindness brings us together no matter how far apart we are. Read the book that inspired the Choose Kind movement, a major motion picture, and the critically acclaimed graphic novel White Bird. And don't miss R.J. Palacio's highly anticipated new novel, Pony, available now! I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
