Book excerpt: Clerk Maxwell's Matter And Motion. -- Though most of those who have devoted themselves to the subject will agree with the author that Physical Science has now arrived at a stage "in which the energy of a material system is conceived as determined by the configuration and motion of that system, and in which the ideas of configuration, motion, and force are generalized to the utmost extent warranted by their physical definitions," yet few of our writers on elementary physics seem to bear this as much in mind as they should do. So indifferent indeed are many of them to the claims of their readers to be instructed as regards the real state of our knowledge at the present time, that those points which should be considered as the very foundation stones on which the whole fabric is built are either almost entirely ignored or else set before the mind in such a form as to convey more or less erroneous impressions concerning them. Instead of giving the reader a clear conception of what force, motion, and energy really mean, and endeavouring to make him thoroughly comprehend that those phenomena of nature which we call heat, light, &c., are merely different forms of energy probably originated in the potential energy of gravitation, they teach him too often to regard them as having little connection with each other. We think that at any rate part of the blame of this may be laid at the door of our examinations, or rather perhaps of the examiners. Most writers of elementary text-books write principally for examinations, and many do not hesitate to say so; and so long as examiners set such questions aa many of them do, so long will such writers continue in the old groove, and real science-teaching be retarded. We are heartily glad, therefore, to see a man of weight, like Professor Clerk Maxwell, boldly stepping out in the right direction. His "statement of the fundamental doctrines of matter and motion" may not perhaps sell, because it is a book from which it is impossible to cram; but the 149 articles which it contains each constitutes in itself a valuable sermon, and we recommend the book even more to the teacher than to the pupil. Let the former consider every line in every article as carefully and with as much pains as Professor Clerk Maxwell has evidently written it, and he will be amply rewarded for his trouble by acquiring for himself and his pupils a more thorough and sound knowledge of the groundwork of Physical Science as we find it at the present time than he would obtain from the concentrated essence of nine-tenths of our more pretentious modern text-books. --The Contemporary Review, Volume 32

In his De motu, loco et tempore or Anti-White (~ 1643), Thomas Hobbes describes Galileo as “the greatest philosopher of all times”, and in De Corpore (1655), the Italian scientist is presented as the one who “opened the door of all physics, that is, the nature of motion.” The book gives a detailed analysis of Galileo’s legacy in Hobbes’s philosophy, exploring four main issues: a comparison between Hobbes’ and Mersenne’s natural philosophies, the Galilean Principles of Hobbes’ philosophical system, a comparison between Galileo’s momentum and Hobbes’s conatus , and Hobbes’ and Galileo’s theories of matter. The book also analyses the role played by Marin Mersenne, in spreading Galileo’s ideas in France, and as a discussant of Hobbes. It highlights the many aspects of Hobbes’ relationship with Galileo: the methodological and epistemological elements, but also the conceptual and the lexical analogies in the field of physics, to arrive, finally, at a close comparison on the subject of the matter. From this analysis emerges a shared mechanical conception of the universe open and infinite, that replaces the Aristotelian cosmos, and which is populated by two elements only: matter and motion.

To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. Book excerpt: This book argues for two claims: firstly, determinism in science does not infringe upon human free will because it is descriptive, not prescriptive, and secondly, the very formulation, testing and justification of scientific theories presupposes human free will and thereby persons as ontologically primitive. The argument against predetermination is broadly Humean, or more precisely ‘Super-Humean’, whereas that against naturalist reduction is in large Kantian, drawing from Sellars on the scientific and the manifest image. Thus, whilst the book defends scientific realism against the confusion between fact and fake, it also reveals why scientific theories, laws and explanations cannot succeed in imposing norms for our actions upon us, neither on the level of the individual nor on that of society. Esfeld makes a strong case for an ontology of science that is minimally sufficient to explain our scientific and common sense knowledge, not only removing the concern that the laws of nature are incompatible with human freedom, but furthermore showing how our freedom is in fact a very presupposition for science.
