Book excerpt: Finally comes the ultimate book for all those seeking to know more about the philosophy behind The Matrix and its sequels. Suppose that this world is not what it seems, and that humanity is actually just a food source supplementing a reign of machines. Welcome to the premise behind the world of The Matrix: the movie phenomenon and massive box-office series that has also produced some of film's most intelligent and thoughtful moments in the last ten years. In the Matrix movies, "reality" is just a dreamscape, a representation that six billion points of view agree to agree is "real." So if the only reality we know is a cunning and elaborate façade, what then does that signify for us? Matrix Warrior gives us the means to understand this premise and its implications on our knowledge of self and place. Combining an in-depth examination of the film with philosophical inquiry and the teachings of Castandeda, Jake Horsley has produced in Matrix Warrior a profound yet witty analysis-and all readers need to get "unplugged." "This accessible, entertaining book will be an enjoyable companion for those who want to dig deeper into the movies' rich universe."- Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The viking berserkr is an iconic warrior normally associated with violent fits of temper and the notorious berserksgangr or berserker frenzy. This book challenges the orthodox view that these men went ‘berserk’ in the modern English sense of the word. It examines all the evidence for medieval perceptions of berserkir and builds a model of how the medieval audience would have viewed them. Then, it extrapolates a Viking Age model of berserkir from this model, and supports the analysis with anthropological and archaeological evidence, to create a new and more accurate paradigm of the Viking Age berserkr and his place in society. This shows that berserkir were the champions of lords and kings, members of the social elite, and that much of what is believed about them is based on 17th-century and later scholarship and mythologizing: the medieval audience would have had a very different understanding of the Old Norse berserkr from that which people have now. The book sets out a challenge to rethink and reframe our perceptions of the past in a way that is less influenced by our own modern ideas. The Myths and Realities of the Viking berserkr will appeal to researchers and students alike studying the Viking Age, Medieval History and Old Norse Literature.

The author has spent twenty years researching the timely topic of fear and how to best manage and transform it. From this experience, he offers an educational healing vision to address the challenges of a dangerous 21st century. Fear's empire has taken rule. It is time to resist it using the best intelligence from both sacred and secular traditions, as well as the transformational theories humanity has to offer. Fisher maps out ten fear management systems that will benefit future-positive leaders everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current dominating worldview and its paradigms of operations are unhealthy and unsustainable. Ecological, economic, political and psychological health are at stake. As experts in a philosophy of fearism, they apply a critical perspective on the dominant Fear Paradigm as root cause of the global crises in the 21st century. They offer a worldview shift via the Fearlessness Paradigm. This is a second major book on this topic, of which the first was Fisher’s The World’s Fearlessness Teachings (2010). This follow-up book is deep, punchy and provocative. It points to the failure of the world to understand the spirit of fearlessness that has existed from the beginning of Life some four billion years ago. The authors, from diverse backgrounds, point to the resistances that work against the recognition and development of the natural ‘gift’ of fearlessness and the design of a Fearlessness Paradigm, both which can counter the abuses of the Fear Paradigm. With extensive research and philosophical thought, the authors dialogue in a fresh imaginative way to help readers and leaders in all walks of life to better understand what resistances they may have to escaping from what Fisher calls the ‘Fear’ Matrix.

CONTENTS: Army Combat Fitness Test Training Guide Version 1.2 FIELD TESTING MANUAL Army Combat Fitness Test Version 1.4 Army Combat Fitness Test CALL NO. 18-37, September 2018 FM 7-22 ARMY PHYSICAL READINESS TRAINING, October 2012 IOC TESTING - ACFT EQUIPMENT LIST (1 X LANE REQUIREMENT) Version 1.1, 4 September 2018 ACFT Field Test Highlight Poster (Final) OVERVIEW: The Army will replace the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) with the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) as the physical fitness test of record beginning in FY21. To accomplish this, the ACFT will be implemented in three phases. Phase 1 (Initial Operating Capability – IOC) includes a limited user Field Test with approximately 60 battalion-sized units from across all components of the Army. While the ACFT is backed by thorough scientific research and has undergone several revisions, there are still details that have not been finalized. The ACFT requires a testing site with a two-mile run course and a flat field space approximately 40 x 40 meters. The field space should be grass (well maintained and cut) or artificial turf that is generally flat and free of debris. While maintaining testing standards and requirements, commanders will make adjustments for local conditions when necessary. The start and finish point for the two-mile run course must be in close proximity to the Leg Tuck station. When test events are conducted indoors, the surface must be artificial turf only. Wood and rubberized surfaces are not authorized as they impact the speed of the Sprint-Drag-Carry. When environmental conditions prohibit outdoor testing, an indoor track may be used for the 2 Mile Run. The Test OIC or NCOIC are responsible to inspect and certify the site and determine the number of testing lanes. There should not be more than 4 Soldiers per testing group for the SPT, HRP, and SDC. The OIC or NCOIC must add additional lanes or move Soldiers to a later testing session to ensure no more than 4 Soldiers per testing group. Concerns related to Soldiers, graders, or commanders will be addressed prior to test day. The number of lanes varies by number of Soldiers testing. A 16-lane ACFT site will have the following: ACFT specific test equipment requirements: 16 hexagon/trap bars (60 pounds), each with a set of locking collars. While all NSN approved hexagon bars must weigh 60 pounds, there is always a small manufacturer’s production tolerance. The approved weight tolerance for the hexagon bar is + 2 pounds (58-62 pounds). Weight tolerance for the hexagon bar and therefore the 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift does not include the collars. On average hexagon bar collars weigh < 2.0 pounds per pair and are considered incidental to the totalweight of the MDL weight. Approximately 3,000 lbs. of bumper plates. 16 x 10 lb. medicine ball 16 x nylon sled with pull straps. 32 x 40 lb. kettle bells. Permanent or mobile pull up bars (16 x pull-up bars at approximately 7.5 feet off the ground with,step-ups for shorter Soldiers). Common unit equipment for set-up and grading: 16 stop watches. 8 x 25m tape measures. 8 x wooden or PVC marking sticks for the SPT. One stick for every two lanes. 70 x 18” traffic cones. 50 field / dome cones. A soft, flat, dry test area approximately 40m x 40m on grass or artificial turf (half of a soccer or football field). A site that is free of any significant hazards. A preparation area (can be same as briefing area) to conduct Preparation Drill. A generally flat, measured running course with a solid, improved surface that is not more than 3 percent uphill grade and has no overall decline (start and finish must be at the same altitude).

Book excerpt: Stanley Kubrick was up to something. But neither his fiercest admirers nor his harshest critics ever suspected what it was. His movies were the means. So what was the end? In this experimental analysis of the work of Stanley Kubrick, Jasun Horsley unpicks the cult of Kubrick, taking a unique approach as he delves into the deeper - and often darker - reasons as to why the director has achieved such admiration over the years. The Kubrickon maps an unholy merger of computer and behavioral sciences that has shaped not just politics but all of modern society over the past decade (e.g. Cambridge Analytica). It explores Stanley Kubrick’s intensive, secret, insider involvement in the building of an architecture of algorithm-directed technology that has steadily encroached into our inner realms, cementing a symbiotic relationship between human consciousness and technology, with culture as the binding medium of an attention economy. Throughout The Kubrickon Horsley uses Kubrick’s critically acclaimed films such as Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: Space Odyssey to provide a fascinating and revelatory overview of the cultural obsession with Stanley Kubrick, as well as on a wider scale providing illuminating criticisms of society’s consumption of culture and media. For those who dislike Kubrick movies, The Kubrickon will finally absolve you of all uncertainty and guilt. For those who adore Kubrick movies, The Kubrickon will challenge you to the core, and may just set you free. For those who are indifferent to Kubrick movies, The Kubrickon will reward you by making you care about, and nurture, your indifference.
