Book excerpt: Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. For example, difference operators are nothing but convolution operators with almost periodic symbols: the operator defined by (A

Book excerpt: The main concern of this book is the distribution of zeros of polynomials that are orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to an indefinite weighted scalar or inner product. The first theorem of this type, proved by M. G. Krein, was a far-reaching generalization of G. Szegö's result for the positive definite case. A continuous analogue of that theorem was proved by Krein and H. Langer. These results, as well as many generalizations and extensions, are thoroughly treated in this book. A unifying theme is the general problem of orthogonalization with invertible squares in modules over C*-algebras. Particular modules that are considered in detail include modules of matrices, matrix polynomials, matrix-valued functions, linear operators, and others. One of the central features of this book is the interplay between orthogonal polynomials and their generalizations on the one hand, and operator theory, especially the theory of Toeplitz marices and operators, and Fredholm and Wiener-Hopf operators, on the other hand. The book is of interest to both engineers and specialists in analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sobolev gradient of a real-valued functional on a Hilbert space is a gradient of that functional taken relative to an underlying Sobolev norm. This book shows how descent methods using such gradients allow a unified treatment of a wide variety of problems in differential equations. For discrete versions of partial differential equations, corresponding Sobolev gradients are seen to be vastly more efficient than ordinary gradients. In fact, descent methods with these gradients generally scale linearly with the number of grid points, in sharp contrast with the use of ordinary gradients. Aside from the first edition of this work, this is the only known account of Sobolev gradients in book form. Most of the applications in this book have emerged since the first edition was published some twelve years ago. What remains of the first edition has been extensively revised. There are a number of plots of results from calculations and a sample MatLab code is included for a simple problem. Those working through a fair portion of the material have in the past been able to use the theory on their own applications and also gain an appreciation of the possibility of a rather comprehensive point of view on the subject of partial differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an introduction to some aspects of stochastic analysis in the framework of normal martingales, in both discrete and continuous time. The text is mostly self-contained, except for Section 5.7 that requires some background in geometry, and should be accessible to graduate students and researchers having already received a basic training in probability. Prereq- sites are mostly limited to a knowledge of measure theory and probability, namely?-algebras,expectations,andconditionalexpectations.Ashortint- duction to stochastic calculus for continuous and jump processes is given in Chapter 2 using normal martingales, whose predictable quadratic variation is the Lebesgue measure. There already exists several books devoted to stochastic analysis for c- tinuous di?usion processes on Gaussian and Wiener spaces, cf. e.g. [51], [63], [65], [72], [83], [84], [92], [128], [134], [143], [146], [147]. The particular f- ture of this text is to simultaneously consider continuous processes and jump processes in the uni?ed framework of normal martingales.

Book excerpt: Stable Lévy processes and related stochastic processes play an important role in stochastic modelling in applied sciences, in particular in financial mathematics. This book is about the potential theory of stable stochastic processes. It also deals with related topics, such as the subordinate Brownian motions (including the relativistic process) and Feynman–Kac semigroups generated by certain Schrödinger operators. The authors focus on classes of stable and related processes that contain the Brownian motion as a special case. This is the first book devoted to the probabilistic potential theory of stable stochastic processes, and, from the analytical point of view, of the fractional Laplacian. The introduction is accessible to non-specialists and provides a general presentation of the fundamental objects of the theory. Besides recent and deep scientific results the book also provides a didactic approach to its topic, as all chapters have been tested on a wide audience, including young mathematicians at a CNRS/HARP Workshop, Angers 2006. The reader will gain insight into the modern theory of stable and related processes and their potential analysis with a theoretical motivation for the study of their fine properties.

Book excerpt: This volume describes the spectral theory of the Weyl quantization of systems of polynomials in phase-space variables, modelled after the harmonic oscillator. The main technique used is pseudodifferential calculus, including global and semiclassical variants. The main results concern the meromorphic continuation of the spectral zeta function associated with the spectrum, and the localization (and the multiplicity) of the eigenvalues of such systems, described in terms of “classical” invariants (such as the periods of the periodic trajectories of the bicharacteristic flow associated with the eiganvalues of the symbol). The book utilizes techniques that are very powerful and flexible and presents an approach that could also be used for a variety of other problems. It also features expositions on different results throughout the literature.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with problems in the structure theory of separable infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, with a central focus on universality problems. This topic goes back to the beginnings of the field and appears in Banach's classical monograph. The novelty of the approach lies in the fact that the answers to a number of basic questions are based on techniques from Descriptive Set Theory. Although the book is oriented on proofs of several structural theorems, in the main text readers will also find a detailed exposition of numerous “intermediate” results which are interesting in their own right and have proven to be useful in other areas of Functional Analysis. Moreover, several well-known results in the geometry of Banach spaces are presented from a modern perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, we de?ne and investigate an algebro-geometric analogue of Donaldson invariants by using moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with arbitrary ranks on a polarized projective surface. We may expect the existence of interesting “universal relations among invariants”, which would be a natural generalization of the “wall-crossing formula” and the “Witten conjecture” for classical Donaldson invariants. Our goal is to obtain a weaker version of such relations, in other brief words, to describe a relation as the sum of integrals over the products of m- uli spaces of objects with lower ranks. Fortunately, according to a recent excellent work of L. Gottsche, ̈ H. Nakajima and K. Yoshioka, [53], a wall-crossing formula for Donaldson invariants of projective surfaces can be deduced from such a weaker result in the rank two case. We hope that our work in this monograph would, at least tentatively, provides a part of foundation for the further study on such universal relations. In the rest of this preface, we would like to explain our motivation and some of important ingredients of this study. See Introduction for our actual problems and results. Donaldson Invariants Let us brie?y recall Donaldson invariants. We refer to [22] for more details and precise. We also refer to [37], [39], [51] and [53]. LetX be a compact simply con- ? nected oriented real 4-dimensional C -manifold with a Riemannian metric g. Let P be a principalSO(3)-bundle on X.

Book excerpt: This volume grew out of a series of preprints which were written and circulated - tween 1993 and 1994. Around the same time, related work was done independently by Harder [40] and Laumon [62]. In writing this text based on a revised version of these preprints that were widely distributed in summer 1995, I ?nally did not p- sue the original plan to completely reorganize the original preprints. After the long delay, one of the reasons was that an overview of the results is now available in [115]. Instead I tried to improve the presentation modestly, in particular by adding cross-references wherever I felt this was necessary. In addition, Chaps. 11 and 12 and Sects. 5. 1, 5. 4, and 5. 5 were added; these were written in 1998. I willgivea moredetailedoverviewofthecontentofthedifferentchaptersbelow. Before that I should mention that the two main results are the proof of Ramanujan’s conjecture for Siegel modular forms of genus 2 for forms which are not cuspidal representations associated with parabolic subgroups(CAP representations), and the study of the endoscopic lift for the group GSp(4). Both topics are formulated and proved in the ?rst ?ve chapters assuming the stabilization of the trace formula. All the remaining technical results, which are necessary to obtain the stabilized trace formula, are presented in the remaining chapters. Chapter 1 gathers results on the cohomology of Siegel modular threefolds that are used in later chapters, notably in Chap. 3. At the beginning of Chap.

Book excerpt: Calabi-Yau manifolds have been an object of extensive research during the last two decades. One of the reasons is the importance of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds in modern physics - notably string theory. An interesting class of Calabi-Yau manifolds is given by those with complex multiplication (CM). Calabi-Yau manifolds with CM are also of interest in theoretical physics, e. g. in connection with mirror symmetry and black hole attractors. It is the main aim of this book to construct families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of ?bers with complex multiplication. Most - amples in this book are constructed using families of curves with dense sets of ?bers with CM. The contents of this book can roughly be divided into two parts. The ?rst six chapters deal with families of curves with dense sets of CM ?bers and introduce the necessary theoretical background. This includes among other things several aspects of Hodge theory and Shimura varieties. Using the ?rst part, families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of ?bers withCM are constructed in the remaining ?ve chapters. In the appendix one ?nds examples of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with complex mul- plication which are not necessarily ?bers of a family with a dense set ofCM ?bers. The author hopes to have succeeded in writing a readable book that can also be used by non-specialists.
