Book excerpt: This is the first major study in any language on J.G. Fichte's philosophy of mathematics and theory of geometry. It investigates both the external formal and internal cognitive parallels between the axioms, intuitions and constructions of geometry and the scientific methodology of the Fichtean system of philosophy. In contrast to "ordinary" Euclidean geometry, in his "Erlanger Logik "of 1805 Fichte posits a model of an "ursprungliche" or original geometry - that is to say, a synthetic and constructivistic conception grounded in ideal archetypal elements that are grasped through geometrical or intelligible intuition. Accordingly, this study classifies Fichte's philosophy of mathematics as a whole as a species of mathematical Platonism or neo-Platonism, and concludes that the "Wissenschaftslehre "itself may be read as an attempt at a new philosophical mathesis, or "mathesis of the mind." "This work testifies to the author's exact and extensive knowledge of the Fichtean texts, as well as of the philosophical, scientific and historical contexts. Nous proposons une reconstruction de sa philosophie des mathématiques fondée sur le texte fragmentaire de l’Erlanger Logik (1805). La philosophie fichtéenne des mathématiques repose sur neuf éléments principaux. Elle a pour fondement un modèle de géométrie synthétique et transcendantale ; pour point de départ, des éléments archétypaux (Ur) ou idéaux ; et elle est platonicienne quant à son statut ontologique. Elle tente également de résoudre le problème des lignes parallèles et de déduire les dimensions de l’espace. En outre, la théorie fichtéenne de la connaissance mathématique repose sur l’intuition et la construction qui sont interprétées comme des paradigmes pour l’intuition et la construction philosophiques. Toutefois, Fichte montre que toutes les intuitions et constructions spécifiques de la géométrie sont fondées dans les intuitions et constructions plus universelles de sa philosophie. Par ailleurs, les éléments fondamentaux de la géométrie, tels que le point, la ligne et le tracer d’une ligne fournissent chacun une image (Bild) philosophique des divers actes et activités du moi. Enfin, le premier principe ou Grundsatz de sa Doctrine de la science possède, selon Fichte, les mêmes caractéristiques que les premiers postulats de la géométrie : évidence, certitude et irréfutabilité. C’est pourquoi il considère l’étude de la géométrie et des mathématiques pures comme une parfaite propédeutique à l’étude de son système de philosophie.

Understanding the trajectory of Newton’s diverse critical and popular reception in print demands consideration of how his ideas were disseminated in a marketplace comprised of readers with varying levels of interest and expertise. Reading Popular Newtonianism focuses on the reception of Newton's works in a context framed by authorship, print, editorial practices, and reading. Informed by sustained archival work and multiple critical approaches, Laura Miller asserts that print facilitated the mainstreaming of Newton's ideas. In addition to his reading habits and his manipulation of print conventions in the Principia, Miller analyzes the implied readership of various "popularizations" as well as readers traced through the New York Society Library's borrowing records. Many of the works considered—including encyclopedias, poems, and a work written "for the ladies"—are not scientifically innovative but are essential to eighteenth-century readers’ engagement with Newtonian ideas. Revising the timeline in which Newton’s scientific ideas entered eighteenth-century culture, Reading Popular Newtonianism is the first book to interrogate at length the importance of print to his consequential career.

Generally, the skirmishes seem more "political" than philosophical, as when one side ridicules the methods of the other or criticizes the viability of the other's issues and assump tions. Analytic interest in third person objectivity is often spurned by Continental philosophers as being unduly abstract. Continental interest in first person subjectivity is often criticized by analysts as being muddled and imprecise. Logical analysis confronts the power of metaphor and judges it "too ambiguous" for rigorous philosophical activity. The language of metaphor confronts the power of logical analysis and deems it "too restric tive" for describing the nature and structures of authentic human exper ience. But are the two approaches really incompatible? Perhaps because each side of the "divide" has been working at problems largely uninteresting to the "opposition" it has been easy to ignore or underestimate the importance of this issue. But now each side is being led into a common field of problems associated with the nature of mind, and there is a new urgency to the need for examining carefully the question of conceptual compatibility and the potential for dialogue. Analytic thinkers are typically in the business of concept clarification and objective certi fication. Continental philosophers employ introspection in the interest of a project of description and classification that aims to be true to the full subtlety and complexity of the human condition.
