Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first pedagogical casebook combining the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Finance and Law, this treatise is predicated on the notion that lawyers are ill-prepared to face a world dominated by numbers and the many who know how to distort and misrepresent them. The title of the book can be deceiving, particularly because the book is designed to avoid the tedious topics and calculations which would typically fall under its headings. Moreover, the book is designed to take an important trio of crucial topics and spoon feed them to the people who need them the most but like them least -- law students. Many jokingly state that they became law students because they couldn't handle numbers. A rude awakening, however, soon confronts them in practice, where numbers are the primary focus of their careers. Nearly every chapter of this book provides information that all lawyers must possess; some of the information is indispensable. We live in a scientific world, a digital world -- one that is ruled by numbers, equations, formulas and statistics. The topics may seem complex, but the explanations are elementary and, at times, entertaining.

Nearly every chapter of this book provides information that all lawyers must possess. Book Synopsis The American Legal Profession by : Christopher P. Banks
Download or read book The American Legal Profession written by Christopher P. Banks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tight and fresh analysis of the American legal profession and its significance to society and its citizens. The book’s primary objective is to expose, and correct, the principal misconceptions— myths— surrounding prelaw study, law school admission, law school, and the American legal profession itself. These issues are vitally important to prelaw advisors and instructors in light of the difficult problems caused by the Great Recessions of 2008 and 2020– 2021 and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It can also be used in career counselling, internships, and the extensive paralegal program market. New to the Second Edition • Expanded coverage to include paralegal and legal assistant training. • New material on women and minority law students who are transforming law schools and the profession. • Explores challenges to the legal profession posed by economic recession, COVID-19, high tuition rates, exploding student loan debt, internet technological advances, and global competitive pressures, including legal outsourcing and DIY legal services. • Updated data and tables along with all underlying research.

Book Synopsis Statistics in the Law by : Joseph B. Kadane
Download or read book Statistics in the Law written by Joseph B. Kadane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics in the Law is primarily a user's manual or desk reference for the expert witness-lawyer team and, secondarily, a textbook or supplemental textbook for upper level undergraduate statistics students. It starts with two articles by masters of the trade, Paul Meier and Franklin Fisher. It then explains the distinction between the Frye and Daughbert standards for expert testimony, and how these standards play out in court. The bulk of the book addresses individual cases covering a wide variety of questions, including: ·Does electronic draw poker require skill to play? ·Did the New Jersey State Police disproportionately stop black motorists? ·Is a jury a representative cross section of the community? ·Were ballots tampered with in an election? The book concludes with Part 5, a review of English law, that includes a case in which a woman was accused of murdering her infant sons because both died of "cot death" or "sudden death syndrome," (she was convicted, but later exonerated), and an examination of how Bayesian analyses can (or more precisely), cannot be presented in UK courts. In each study, the statistical analysis is shaped to address the relevant legal questions, and draws on whatever methods in statistics might shed light on those questions.
Book Synopsis Stochastic Finance by : Hans Föllmer
Download or read book Stochastic Finance written by Hans Föllmer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to financial mathematics. It is intended for graduate students in mathematics and for researchers working in academia and industry. The focus on stochastic models in discrete time has two immediate benefits. First, the probabilistic machinery is simpler, and one can discuss right away some of the key problems in the theory of pricing and hedging of financial derivatives. Second, the paradigm of a complete financial market, where all derivatives admit a perfect hedge, becomes the exception rather than the rule. Thus, the need to confront the intrinsic risks arising from market incomleteness appears at a very early stage. The first part of the book contains a study of a simple one-period model, which also serves as a building block for later developments. Topics include the characterization of arbitrage-free markets, preferences on asset profiles, an introduction to equilibrium analysis, and monetary measures of financial risk. In the second part, the idea of dynamic hedging of contingent claims is developed in a multiperiod framework. Topics include martingale measures, pricing formulas for derivatives, American options, superhedging, and hedging strategies with minimal shortfall risk. This fourth, newly revised edition contains more than one hundred exercises. It also includes material on risk measures and the related issue of model uncertainty, in particular a chapter on dynamic risk measures and sections on robust utility maximization and on efficient hedging with convex risk measures. Contents: Part I: Mathematical finance in one period Arbitrage theory Preferences Optimality and equilibrium Monetary measures of risk Part II: Dynamic hedging Dynamic arbitrage theory American contingent claims Superhedging Efficient hedging Hedging under constraints Minimizing the hedging error Dynamic risk measures

Book excerpt: This book applies the mathematics and concepts of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory to the modelling of interest rates and the theory of options. Particular emphasis is placed on path integrals and Hamiltonians. Financial mathematics is dominated by stochastic calculus. The present book offers a formulation that is completely independent of that approach. As such many results emerge from the ideas developed by the author.
