This book was released on 2005 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended to supply teachers with sample assessment items that produce an accurate picture of their students’ thinking, to guide teachers’ instructional decisions and to serve as models for creating original assessment items. The items are selected or modified from state, national and international assessments; textbooks; private collections of mathematics educators and originally written problems. The types of items include multiple choice, short response and extended response. All items either require students to explain their answers or ask comparative questions among answer choices. Some items are scaffolded so that all students have access to them; only a few items require the use of a calculator. Selected samples of student work either exemplify a correct response or typify certain categories of student errors.

Download or read book Mathematics Assessment Sampler, Grades 3-5 written by J. D. Gawronski and published by National Council of Teachers of English. This book was released on 2005 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sample assessment items in this volume are sorted according to the strands of number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and data analysis and probability. Because one goal of assessment is to determine students’ abilities to communicate mathematically, the writing team suggests ways to extend or modify multiple-choice and short-answer items to elicit students’ thinking. The writers also present various rubrics as examples of how teachers might score extended-response questions. When students know in advance how their answers will be evaluated, they will strive to meet expected criteria. The hope is that teachers will find this material useful as they plumb their students’ thinking and consider how students’ responses can guide their instructional decisions.
Book Synopsis A Sampler of Mathematics Assessment by : Tej Pandey
Download or read book A Sampler of Mathematics Assessment written by Tej Pandey and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The California Assessment Program (CAP) administers tests to all public school students at certain grade levels, compiles the results, and provides information that allows educators to judge the effectiveness of their programs and make improvements. This sampler describes the types of assessment that CAP proposes to respond to the needed changes that reflect the recent curricular reforms in schools throughout California. The four types of assessment planned for CAP are: (1) open-ended problems; (2) enhanced multiple-choice questions; (3) investigations; and (4) portfolios. These modes of assessment are recommended for adaption for teachers of all grade levels and teachers are encouraged to use the examples in the booklet to enhance classroom instruction and to develop tasks for student assessment. After chapter 1 that describes the changes in assessment, the sampler is divided into six major parts: chapter 2, "Assessment of Mathematical Power"; chapter 3, "Types of Assessment"; chapter 4, "Performance Standards and Judging a Student's Work", chapter 5, "Implementation of Authentic Assessment in Your School," chapter 6, "Sample Problems." A "Participation and Feedback" page is given to ask participants' comments and suggestions about the sampler. (11 selected references) (MDH)

Book Synopsis Mathematics Assessment and Evaluation by : Thomas A. Romberg
Download or read book Mathematics Assessment and Evaluation written by Thomas A. Romberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are current testing practices consistent with the goals of the reform movement in school mathematics? If not, what are the alternatives? How can authentic performance in mathematics be assessed? These and similar questions about tests and their uses have forced those advocating change to examine the way in which mathematical performance data is gathered and used in American schools. This book provides recent views on the issues surrounding mathematics tests, such as the need for valid performance data, the implications of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics for test development, the identification of valid items and tests in terms of the Standards, the procedures now being used to construct a sample of state assessment tests, gender differences in test taking, and methods of reporting student achievement.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a comprehensive survey and critical analysis of today's issues in mathematics education, distills research to build knowledge and capacity in the field. The compendium is a valuable new resource that provides the most comprehensive evidence about what is known about research in mathematics education. The 38 chapters present five sections that address research about (1) foundations, (2) methods, (3) mathematical processes and content, (4) students, teachers, and learning environments, and (5) futuristic issues. Each chapter offers a synthesis of research with an eye to the historical development of a research topic and, in particular, historical milestones of the research about the topic.

Book Synopsis Assessment Standards for School Mathematics by : National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Download or read book Assessment Standards for School Mathematics written by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and published by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This book was released on 1995 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document was created because of the need for new assessment strategies and practices to be developed to enable teachers and others to assess students' performance in a manner that reflects the NCTM's reform vision for school mathematics. Instead of assuming that the purpose of assessment is to rank students on a particular trait, the new approach assumes that high public expectations can be set that every student can strive for and achieve, that different performances can and will meet agreed-on expectations, and that teachers can be fair and consistent judges of diverse student performances. The first sections of the document discuss six mathematics assessment standards: (1) The Mathematics Standard, (2) The Learning Standard, (3) The Equity Standard, (4) The Openness Standard, (5) The Inferences Standard, and (6) The Coherence Standard. The use of the assessment standards is then discussed in the context of different purposes such as monitoring students' progress, making instructional decisions, evaluating students' achievement, and evaluating programs. The next section discusses what should happen next with regard to mathematical assessment. The document concludes with a glossary and a selected assessment bibliography with 116 citations. Contains 28 references. (MKR)

Download or read book Math That Matters written by Marian Small and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful math resource for grades 3–8, popular professional developer Marian Small helps teachers understand and facilitate meaningful assessments to advance student understandings. Small shows new and veteran teachers how to do three fundamental things well: identify the most important math to assess; construct meaningful assessments—both formative and summative—to measure student understanding; and provide students with feedback that is clear, timely, and specific. Examples for each grade level are provided, along with details on how to pose questions, analyze errors, and help students understand and learn from their mistakes. The book provides specific guidance for when and how to offer feedback on both correct and incorrect answers in order to advance students’ mathematical thinking. Like other Marian Small bestsellers, Math That Matters combines her special brand of lucid explanation of difficult concepts with fresh and engaging activities. “Our understanding of the power of assessment to improve learning has deepened significantly in the past two decades. . . . Marian Small draws upon the critical research behind this understanding to explain what effective practice looks like. It is essential reading for all elementary educators and has the potential to profoundly affect the quality of mathematics assessment in our schools.” —From the Foreword by Damian Cooper, president, Plan Teach Assess “Teachers are often clamoring for concise classroom assessments that can capture students’ conceptual understanding. Clamor no more! Math That Matters is a timely response to that need. Marian Small removes the mystery of how to engage students in learning while collecting assessment data that drive next instructional plans.” —Karen Karp, Johns Hopkins University “The beauty of this book is that it is simple enough for brand new teachers and complex enough for experienced teachers. The author offers an amazing gift by linking assessment ideas directly to common state standards.” —Felicia Darling, Santa Rosa Junior College
