This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methods for teaching mathematics usually follow the structure of mathematics. The problem with this is that the structure of mathematics took centuries of elaboration to develop and is not the same as how one originally experiences mathematics. Based on research of how mathematics is actually learned, this book presents an innovative approach for teaching mathematics that will engage pupils and can have lifelong benefits for how they take on board more advanced mathematical topics.Math Makes Sense! makes use of the realistic mathematics education (RME) philosophy, which bridges the gap between informal mathematics learning (such as in day-to-day life) and more formal teaching in school. Many real-life situations as examples for learning are included, as well as different mathematical and logic puzzles that will stimulate learning and foster understanding. The ideas presented are not confined to one national curriculum and so can be helpful worldwide to teachers/ instructors (both in practice and those still in training), private tutors, homeschooling parents, and educational researchers.

Book excerpt: An independent book written and self-published by former math teacher and private math tutor Larry Zafran. Students are justified in proclaiming that "math is hard," but there is a specific reason why they feel this way. The author maintains that the struggle can be lessened by following the roadmap presented, but it will take time and effort on the part of the student. Since math is often not properly taught, it is often not properly learned. Anything that hasn't truly been learned, regardless of subject, is "hard." Once the various concepts are more secure, and the student's gaps in understanding have been addressed, math will have been made "a bit easier" as promised by the book's title. However, the book does not imply that learning math is fast, fun, or easy. Most of the book's content is comprised of the roadmap of topics for a student to work through at his/her own pace. Like all paths, it begins at the beginning, in this case starting with a review of basic arithmetic, followed by basic operations, negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and basic probability and statistics. This is the foundation of all math. The space devoted to each topic is proportional to how difficult most students find the topic, as well as how important the topic is in preparation for later math studies. The material is explained conversationally and "in plain English" as promised by the book's subtitle, without talking down to the reader, and without the use of contrived examples or cartoonish illustrations. The book concludes with a chapter on how to effectively study math and improve scores on exams. Like the rest of the book, the chapter takes a unique standpoint on the matter, and offers suggestions which include how to get oneself into the proper mental and emotional mindset for being successful with math.

Book excerpt: Helping bring mathematics and engineering to life, these challenging lessons give teachers an exciting tool for engaging advanced learners through creativity and hands-on products. Units are driven by standards and invite students to become baseball field architects, create flying jellyfish, make a gnome hat parachute, scale skyscrapers, and more! Each project includes step-by-step lesson plans with reproducible templates, time estimates, and a materials list. While centered on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) competencies, true to real-world experiences, these hands-on projects span the curriculum—including writing and public speaking—and while they suit entire classrooms and smaller groups, they can also be easily adapted to individual projects for independent study and home school.

Book excerpt: Your user’s guide to the mathematics standards In the 12 short months since the ELA versions of The Common Core Companions, Grades K-2 and 3-5, burst on the scene, they’ve already assisted tens of thousands of teachers with the day-to-day "what you do." Teachers’ one big criticism: what about mathematics? Luckily NCTM past-president Linda Gojak and mathematics coach Ruth Harbin Miles stepped up to the task. The result? That version of the mathematics standards you wish you had. Page by page, The Common Core Mathematics Companions clearly lay out: The mathematics embedded in each standard for a deeper understanding of the content Examples of what effective teaching and learning look like in the classroom Connected standards within each domain so teachers can better appreciate how they relate Priorities within clusters so teachers know where to focus their time The three components of rigor: conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and applications Vocabulary and suggested materials for each grade-level band with explicit connections to the standards Common student misconceptions around key mathematical ideas with ways to address them Don’t spend another minute poring over the mathematics standards. Gojak and Miles have already done the heavy-lifting for you. Focus instead on how to teach them, using The Common Core Mathematics Companion as your one-stop guide for teaching, planning, assessing, collaborating, and designing powerful mathematics curriculum.
