Book excerpt: Maine meets Girls in White Dresses in this Globe and Mail bestseller about three very different sisters, their feminist mother, and what it takes to love someone—whether it be family, friends, or spouses—for life. Former folk singer Helen Sear was a feminist wild child, raising three daughters, Liane, Ilsa and Fiona (each by different fathers) largely on her own. Now in her sixties, Helen has fallen in love with a traditional man who desperately wants to marry her—and while she’s fearful of losing him, she’s equally afraid she’ll betray everything she’s ever stood for if she goes through with it. Her youngest daughter, Liane, is in the heady early days of a relationship with the love of her life. But he has an ex-wife and two daughters—and her new role as “step-something” doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Ilsa, an artist, is fervently hoping her second marriage will stick. Yet her world feels like it is slowly shrinking, and she realizes she may need to break free again, even if it means disrupting the lives of her two young children. And then there’s Fiona, the eldest sister, who discovers her husband has been harboring a huge secret, which makes her own past harder to ignore. To regain stability, she must face some hard truths, and alter her impossibly high expectations. Through these alternating perspectives, and with pitch-perfect honesty and heartwarming humor, Stapley explores sex, marriage, and how the many roles that women play are often at odds with each other. Ultimately a celebration of the redemptive power of love in all its forms, Mating for Life is a stunning, memorable debut.

Book excerpt: There’s something strange about my new crush, but finding out his secret may cost me my life. Up until now, my life was uneventful: I lived with my dad, went to school, and sometimes dealt with my unexplained headaches. But in an instant, everything changes. My father dies, and I’m left orphaned and alone. That is, until I’m told that my estranged mother will take me in. When I arrive, I learn I have two sisters, but any dreams of belonging are destroyed when my new family treats me like a servant. In fact, the entire community shuns me. I’m convinced they’re a cult, and I’m desperate to escape. And then I meet the one boy who’s brave enough to flirt with me, despite my status. He’s gorgeous, intriguing… And completely rude half the time. The harder I try to fight my attraction to the jerk, the more I want to know about him. But solving the mystery surrounding him may put the whole community in danger. I’m an outsider, after all. Then I finally find out the truth: my entire family is made up of werewolves. So is the community. Worst of all, the boy I love is one of the monsters. And they won’t just cast me out if I reveal their deadly secret. They’ll kill me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Wing transforms the timeless miracle of the migration of a flock of geese into a parable for the modern age. It recounts a young goose’s own reluctant but steady transformation from gangly fledgling to Grand Goose and his triumph over the turmoils of his soul and the buffeting of a mighty Atlantic storm. In The Great Wing, our potential as individuals is affirmed, as is the power of group prayer, or the “Flock Mind.” As we make the journey with this goose and his flock, we rediscover that we tie our own potential into the power of the common good by way of attributes such as honesty, hope, courage, perseverance, spirituality, and service. The young goose’s trial and tribulations, as well as his triumph, are our own.

Book excerpt: The Sex Side of Life is a sex education pamphlet written by Mary Ware Dennett with a goal to educate her sons, because she was unable to find any adequate books on the subject. Many of the books on sex either contained inaccurate information or used fear and shame tactics to dissuade the youth from having sex. Therefore, she decided to write her own explanation using research and interviews with doctors. The pamphlet was twenty-four pages long. Dennett used scientific discussion of sex while also including the emotion side of sex relations. The pamphlet covered controversial topics including masturbation, sexually transmitted diseases, prostitution, and support for the use of birth control. Her views were considered radical for this time, because she was not promoting abstinence.

Book excerpt: Apparition begins with the attempted suicide of Simon Cross; a man plagued with the tragedy of losing his wife. Instead of escaping his sorrow, he awakes from a coma four years later only to find himself completely paralyzed. Incapable of moving, or even speaking, he becomes the prisoner of his own body. Still plagued with the loss of his wife, his only occupation in life is imagining her standing at the foot of his bed. Over time, the image of his wife gradually comes to life, sometimes appearing no different than a physical person. At first, he thinks his imagination is simply growing more acute. But this assumption is soon shattered on one fateful night when she, (the image of his late wife), arrives with open arms, inviting him to join her. Separating from his physical body, Simon is finally free from the prison of his mortal shell. From this moment on, Simons perception of reality is turned upside down. His escapades as an apparition traverse the spectrum of emotion. The horror of demonic encounters, the humor of the ultimate pranks, and the wonder of the unknown, all become a part of Simons everyday life. A physicist by trade, Simon quickly begins to study his abilities, testing by trial and error. These tests become an integral part of his new life. He quickly discovers that there are many inherent properties in a spirit body. Universal language translation through ESP, several different modes of travel, an odd relationship with matter, and an immunity to the effects of gravity, weather, and the atmosphere itself, are just a few. (Every test is accompanied with an unpredictable story). Armed with his knowledge of physics and creative imagination, Simons tests eventually lead him to see what the effects of electrical shock produce on his spiritual body. To his delight, he discovers that electricity has a healing property that enables him to regenerate his physical body; specifically, his spinal cord! It isnt long after this that Simons physical body rejuvenates, and Simon once again becomes a participant in the world. Unknown to Simon is the interest hes attracted from individuals in covert government agencies. These individuals introduce themselves to Simon shortly after he re-enters society. Though their motives appear altruistic, their main interest in Simon is getting his help to produce a top-secret military weapon. This weapon, if produced, would enable the person wearing it to kill anyone, anywhere, anytime, completely undetected. Secrets could not be kept from him, plots could not be made against him, and no one would be safe from him. He would be like a demon unleashed on the earth, with all humanity to devour as he pleases. This synopsis, by far, doesnt encapsulate the entirety of Apparition. Simons romance with the nurse he falls in love with while in the hospital, his narrow escapes from the powers of darkness, his personal journey to faith, and his many friendships, are all an integral part of this thought provoking tale. I hope this summary is enough to arouse curiosity, but not enough to dispel the joy of not knowing whats around the next corner. P.S.
