Book excerpt: This study compared the effects of two maternal interactions: infant massage and reading, on hospitalized premature infants and their mothers. Self-report measures of maternal self-esteem, sense of well-being, maternal perception of her infant, and infant weight gain patterns were utilized. Nineteen mothers of premature infants admitted to the Special Care Nurseries at UCDMC were recruited to participate in this study. Each mother completed a demographic questionnaire and three self-report measures upon entry into the study. Infants were assessed for their level of organization in five areas of function, and infant weights monitored. Ten mothers massaged their babies for 10 minutes daily and nine mothers read to their babies for 10 minutes daily. After pretest questionnaires were completed, mothers were instructed to massage or read to their babies. The massage or reading was initiated in the hospital once the babies were medically stable. Interventions were continued at home for a total of 28 days. Mothers repeated the self-report measures described above at the end of 28 days. It was expected that the Massage Group mothers would first show an increase in maternal self-esteem, and second have higher maternal self-esteem than Control Group mothers. In addition, Massage Group mothers were expected to have a more positive perception of their infants than Control Group mothers. Massaged infants were expected to gain more weight than Control Group infants. Differences were found between the two groups. Massaged infants had a mean weight gain of 206.5 gms. more than Control Group infants (p =.000). Massage Group mothers had a greater sense of well-being (p =.007), and had higher Maternal Self-Esteem (p =.033) than Control Group mothers. Massage Group mothers demonstrated an increase in positive perception of their infants, but did not reach statistical significance.
