Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials of Construction, Their Manufacture and Properties Tins work is an outgrowth of certain lectures and notes which have been used in the author's classes in the College of Civil Engineering, Cornell University, for the past several years. Its preparation was undertaken to meet the need which was felt for a general text-book covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the more common materials of engineering construction in a comparatively concise and thoroughly modem manner. Although this book is intended primarily for use as a text-book of somewhat elementary character and is not a treatise exhaustively covering the very broad field of " Materials of Construction," the treatment has been made more detailed in some respects than may be necessary for class-room purposes, and its applications as a general reference work thereby broadened. The treatment of the various classes of materials considered follows a general systematic form which has been made uniform throughout so far as has been found practicable. The consideration of each material or class of materials is prefaced by a discussion of its ordinary applications in engineering construction, followed by a study of its manufacture or natural occurrence, and concluded by a discussion of physical and mechanical properties in their relation to its uses. As a result of the author's experience in the teaching of this subject, the properties exhibited by a given material are, for the most part, considered as dependent phenomena closely related to certain more or less variable factors connected with the process of manufacture, natural occurrence, and conditions of service or testing, and not as independent qualities inherent in that material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Materials: Being an Introduction to the Study of the Principal Materials Used in Building Construction This book is intended to be an introduction to the study of Building Materials for the instruction of the young builder and architect. Only the principal materials are dealt with, special stress being laid on the exact examination of the materials for their constructional strength under different conditions, and their composition as revealed by chemical analysis, and by the microscope. The author realises that some, at any rate, of his readers may be unacquainted with the elements of chemistry. He has, therefore, tried to make the essential chemical information as simple as possible at the risk of some repetition. The student is advised to regard this book as merely introductory, and pursue his studies further by reading, more especially, Howe's Geology of Building Stones; The Materials of Construction, by Johnson; The Chemistry and Testing of Cements, by Desch; Concrete, Plain and Reinforced, by Taylor and Thompson; Modern Brickmaking, by Searle The Mechanical Properties of Wood, by Record; House Painting and Decoration, by Jennings; and Modern Asphalt Pavements, by Richardson. The author wishes at this point to express his deep indebtedness to these text-books in particular, as well as to others, for the information contained in the following pages. In addition, various text-books, the publications of the Engineering and Architectural Societies, both here and in America and the Reports of the Washington Bureau for the investigation of Building Materials have been consulted. Students interested in the resistance to fire of various materials should consult the Reports of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The author wishes especially to thank Professor Desch, Mr Searle, Mr Howe, Mr Borthwick, Mr Jennings, and Mr Vaughan for having kindly looked through the chapters in which they are Specially interested, and made many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete: Properties and Manufacture The book is intended to be useful to the student and graduate engineer as well as a reference book for the site engineer. To this end the theoretical and practical considerations have been combined in a degree found necessary in the Author's practical experience. The subject of concrete is vast and the literature on it is extensive, but a selective list of references for further study of individual aspects of the subject is provided. Information is included from many sources but the Author has endeavoured to give credit to these references. Many of the diagrams, graphs and illustrations are based on published information, the source of which has in each case been acknow ledged. The plates to Chapter 7 are from photographs kindly made available by the Cement and Concrete Association. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johnson's Materials of Construction: Rewritten There have also been some changes in the scope of the new work. The space devoted to the principles of mechanics has been materially reduced by more concise treatment. In general, discussion of the proper ties of composite members has been omitted. The writers feel justified in this omission since these subjects are now well treated in many text books on mechanics, structural design, and reinforced concrete. In the portion devoted to timber, space has been conserved by the omission of the descriptions of trees and by a complete revision and rearrangement of material, thus avoiding the duplications present in the earlier book. The methods of microscopic analysis and magnetic testing of metals have been omitted since it is felt that an adequate treatment of these very important special methods of investigation can not be given in a treatise of this char acter. On the other hand the new work treats more fully than the former concerning structural clay products, limes and plasters, Portland cement, making and testing of concrete, the methods of manufacture of the metals and the parts made of them, the structure and constitution of metals and alloys, the corrosion and protection of metals, and the decay and preserva tion of timber. Great care has been taken to illustrate adequately the revised work with material from the best sources. Old figures have been redrawn and, wherever possible, reduced in size. The large use of diagrams and charts in presenting facts and laws, and the omission of tables wherever possible has featured the present volume as it did the previous book. Dean Johnson well said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Materials of Construction: A Treatise for Engineers on the Strength of Engineering Materials The mechanical properties of the materials to be employed to accomplish the objects sought. Of these three coordinate departments of knowledge the first two are founded on the sciences of mathematics and applied mechanics. The last one, however, does not rest on any deductive science, as this information can only be gained by patient, expensive, and competent research. For this reason the third essential named above has not kept pace with the other two kinds of engineering science; but, on the other hand, it furnishes very much greater rewards to the skilled investigator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure and Properties, of the More Common, Materials of Construction The second part of the book deals with the nature of the internal structure of materials and the control of properties through the control of the internal structure. This part of the book becomes a short study of theoretical and applied metallography. Realizing, however, that the scientific language of metallography might scare the student into thinking the subject more difficult and complicated than it is, care has been used to present the principles of physical chemistry concerned in simple words, and with many diagrams to make relations clear. Certain parts of the book are, so far as the author is aware, either entirely new or have never before been given in similar detail. Such are the general analysis for finding of true stresses after the yield point in torsion and transverse loading; and the detailed description and ex planation of heat treatment from the standpoint of physical chemistry. The new method for torsion and transverse test analysis may clear up the controversies concerning Guest's law or other laws for condi tions of failure in combined loadings, and may make the tests of ductile metals in direct shear unnecessary. The new analysis of the general nature and of the detail of heat treatment, presented mathematically and in diagrams, already throws much light upon the problems, and may be the beginning of a complete theory. Particular thanks for assistance in the composition of the book, criticism of the text, etc., are due to Mr. W. R. Wigley and Mr. W. J. Diederichs.
