This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science forms the foundation for engineers in product development because the structures, components and devices that engineers design are limited by the properties of the materials that are available and the techniques that can be used for fabrication. Materials science mostly focuses on the basic study of materials, which includes basic mathematical formulae and also foundation physics of materials. Materials engineering on the other hand concentrates on the development of new materials for industrial and user applications. Materials engineering is an important discipline of engineering that has assisted other technologies to improve the variety of products being produced globally. This science has improved the characteristics of existing materials and has also contributed to produce materials with improved properties. The purpose of materials engineering is to obtain knowledge about the materials so that alternate materials with the desired characteristics may be produced. The basics of materials engineering relate the requisite properties of the materials with the structure of atoms in that material. The science of materials engineering examines the connection between the structures of materials at molecular scales and their macroscopic characteristics. The materials engineering is a broad based science that includes essentials of chemistry, physics, mechanical and civil engineering. Due to the advancement of the nanotechnology, the science of materials engineering has obtained significant importance in recent years. Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local knowledge worldwide is rapidly declining. Since local knowledge is passed from generation through oral tradition the chances of it being documented are low. Further to that, scientific knowledge sometimes cannot provide solutions to management and development problems. This book attempts to show that local knowledge and scientific knowledge have similarities in how they are obtained, however local knowledge has a further and more complex spiritual existence practised through cultural rituals or myths. Local knowledge has many applications in agriculture, water management, agroforestry and environmental management and when combined with science have greater uses to solve local problems at hand.

These articles are intended for academics, policymakers and researchers in higher education to enhance their understanding, leading ultimately to sustainable human capital development. The book seeks to present a comprehensive discussion on internationalisation as a variable in higher education, and hence, derive alternative futures of higher education systems. It also suggests a different perspective regarding the appraisal of higher learning institutions and the subsequent influence on policy recommendations. Many of these important aspects are gathered together under topics such as “Internationalising Higher Education: A Malaysian Perspective”, “Rankings and Policy Contradictions: Is It Time to Move Beyond Rankings?” and “Campuses 2060: Four Futures of Higher Education in Four Alternative Futures of Society”. This book is recommended to anyone seeking to further enhance their knowledge in higher education, especially in regards to policymaking.

However, until recently, there has been no proper compilation of scientific data on the Orang Asli, especially on their genetic and dental profiles. The Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia is among the oldest populations in the world and therefore knowledge on their genotype and phenotype is extremely precious, especially in providing insight into their evolutionary process and in helping mitigate potential challenges that they may face in the future. Research by various groups as compiled in this book suggests that the Orang Asli is indeed facing significant challenges for their survival - effects that resulted from changes in their lifestyle, environmental and socio-economical pressures, as well as inbreeding. These negative 'pressures' therefore need to be effectively addressed to ensure their survival. This book contains important information on the genetic and dental profiles of the Orang Asli that will be useful as background data for future research as well as to assist the relevant authorities to design and implement meaningful policies for the Orang Asli.

It presents the related science and technology knowledge, new applications or developments that have taken place based on local knowledge. It consists of papers that illustrate the contribution of local knowledge to scientific investigation, unearth unknown or little known significance of local plant and animal resources, as well as their management and conservation. The argument for the importance of modern techniques to increase the supply of natural resources through scientific manipulations is clear. However, traditional methods that ensure better quality and resilience is recommended. Integration of the traditional with the modern is explored, using disaster management strategies and integrative health care system as examples. Another aspect explored in this book is the changing food culture among the three main ethnics groups in Malaysia due to their interactions within a multicultural society. This book also highlights the contribution of local knowledge in developing animation technology. Experimentation with GIS technology in the performing arts to map a dance performance is an example of trans-disciplinary collaboration between technology and the arts. This book serves to expand knowledge in science and technology that deals with local knowledge, and make it accessible to a wider, global audience beyond the Malay world.
