Book excerpt: This timely work provides a new perspective on the study of writing. Alice Glarden Brand studies the affective aspects of writing, writer's emotional arousal, and processes. Current work in the field is dominated by the cognitive view, the intellectual process of writing. Brand argues that to be complete, theories of writing must include the affective component. Apart from research on writers' block and apprehension, almost no research addresses emotions in writing. Empirical studies of five groups are presented in the book--college writers, advanced expository writers, professional writers, student poets, and teachers of writing. Examined are the intensity and frequency of 20 emotional states experienced while writing. Representative case studies and writing samples enrich the reader's understanding of human feeling and written language. The Psychology of Writing begins with personal accounts of the emotions of literary figures. It then describes the affective bases of linguistic thought, with background on English education and the cognitive model of writing.dA chapter is devoted to the psychology of emotion. Next, an operational framework for the studies is outlined and the research program described. The reports of the five writing populations are followed by the conclusion in which the results are summarized and research opportunities are proposed. Educators, psychologists, and discourse specialists--all those concerned with the serious study of writing--will find The Psychology of Writing a significant work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epistemology, Archaeology, Ethics: Current Investigations of Husserl's Corpus presents fifteen original essays by an international team of expert contributors that together represent a cross-section of Husserl Studies today. The collection manifests the extent to which single themes in Husserl's corpus cannot be isolated, but must be considered in relation to their overlap with each other. Many of the accepted views of Husserl's philosophy are currently in a state of flux, with positions that once seemed incontestable now finding themselves relegated to the status of one particular school of thought among several. Among all the new trends and approaches, this volume offers a representative sample of how Husserlian research should be conducted given the current state of the corpus. The book is divided into four parts, each dedicated to an area of Husserl Studies that is currently gaining prominence: Husserlian epistemology; his views on intentionality; the archaeology of constitution; and ethics, a relatively recent field of study in phenomenology.

Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1960s, women's studies scholars worked to introduce courses on the history, literature, and philosophies of women. While these initial efforts were rather general, women's studies programs have started to give increasing amounts of attention to the special concerns of women of color. The topic itself is politically charged, and there is growing awareness that the issues facing women of color are diverse and complex. Expert contributors offer chapters on the major concerns facing women of color in the modern world, particularly in the United States and Latin America. Each chapter treats one or more groups of women who have been underrepresented in women's studies scholarship or have had their experiences misinterpreted, including African Americans, Latina Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Women of Color includes chapters on theories related to race, gender, and identity. One section provides discussions of literature by women of color, including works by such authors as Toni Morrison and Maxine Hong Kingston. The book also focuses on the place of women of color in higher education, including chapters on women of color and the women's studies curriculum, and the role of librarians in shaping women's studies programs.
