Book excerpt: The German legend of the Red Jews, a medieval conflation of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel with the biblical destroyers Gog and Magog, articulated throughout the Middle Ages and well into the sixteenth century a fundamentally antisemitic strain of popular apocalypticism. This undigested piece of medievalia disappeared as more strictly biblical narratives of the End replaced medieval myth. As a result, the Red Jews have not been noticed by modern historians though they were a universally-known feature of German apocalyptic belief for over three centuries.

Book excerpt: The fourteen chapters in this anthology feature original analyses of contemporary German-language literary texts, films, political cartoons, cabaret, and other types of performance. The artworks display a wide spectrum of humor modes, such as irony, satire, the grotesque, Jewish humor, and slapstick, as responses to unification with the accompanying euphoria, but also alienation and dislocation. Kerstin Hensel’s Lärchenau, Christoph Hein’s Landnahme, and vignette collections by Jakob Hein (Antrag auf ständige Ausreise und andere Mythen der DDR) and Wladimir Kaminer (Es gab keinen Sex im Sozialismus) are interpreted as examples of the grotesque. The popular films Lola rennt, Sonnenallee, Herr Lehmann, NVA, Alles auf Zucker!, and Mein Führer—Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler are reexamined through the lens of traditional and more recent humor or comic book theories. The contributors focus on how each artwork enriches four prominent postwall German cultural trends: post-unification identity reconstruction, Vergangenheitsbewältigung (including Hitler humor), New German Popular Literature (Christian Kracht’s ironic subtexts), and immigrant perspectives (a “third voice” in the East-West binary reflected here pointedly in Eulenspiegel cartoons). To date, no other scholarly work provides as comprehensive an overview of the diverse strategies of humor used in the past two decades in German-speaking countries.

Book excerpt: During the 17th and 18th century musicians' mobilities and migrations are essential for the European music history and the cultural exchange of music. Adopting viewpoints that reflect different methodological approaches and diversified research cultures, the book presents studies on central scopes, strategies and artistic outcomes of mobile and migratory musicians as well as on the transfer of music. By looking at elite and non-elite musicians and their everyday mobilities to major and minor centers of music production and practice, new biographical patterns and new stylistic paradigms in the European East, West and South emerge.

This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh perspective on the patriarchal ideology of reform in early modern Germany by revealing its roots in a pan-European catechetical program that had endured a cyclical process of growth and decline since the twelfth century, with each new phase sparked by crises in Church and society. Based on sermons, reform ordinances, devotional treatises and especially catechisms, the book explores the programs developed by reformers and codified in works of religious indoctrination designed to fashion godly fathers (real and metaphorical) in home, church, and body politic. The chief product of this program, argues the author, was an ethos of social discipline that permeated the institutions of each major confession, with government gradually empowered to reach more deeply than ever before into the lives of its subjects.

Book excerpt: What is "European Angst"? Is it the extension of "German Angst" to a whole continent? The latter term is often used disparagingly to describe the German tendency to problematise, weigh up and hesitate, especially when reasons for this seem slight and insignificant. But European Angst has nothing to do with stereotypical overscrupulousness. It is a mass of powerful emotions which transcend national borders and therefore seemed a fitting title for a conference which was to address disturbing developments, including populism, extremism and Euroscepticism.

A play upon the homonyms 'site' and 'sight' in the title points to a shared concern, namely how any of the visible components of Rome-the hills, the Tiber, the temples, the Fora, the Colosseum, the statues and monuments-operates as, or becomes, one of the sites sights of Rome.

Book excerpt: The legend of a dog which is unjustly killed by its master in error, after it has defended his child from attack by a snake or wolf, appears in several popular cultures of Indo-European origin. This book concentrates on one local manifestation of the legend: a cult among the peasants of the Dombes, north of Lyons, who brought their sick child to the grave of 'Saint Guinefort', the martyred greyhound, for preservation from disease. Providing a rare access to the underlying cultural traditions of Europe, all too often submerged in the survivals of literate culture, this book will be welcomed by a wide range of historians and anthropologists.

Book excerpt: MUSEUM OF UNHEARD (OF) THINGS is the catalogue raisonne of the world-famous "literary cabinet of curiosities" in Berlin, which holds the record of being the most visited museum in the German capital (if one offsets the number of visitors to the square meters of the exhibition space). The museum collects unique objects to which curator Roland Albrecht has patiently lent his ear in order to hear the unheard (of) story each of them has to tell. This book is the first publication to assemble all the 78 stories in the current collection, all categorized according to weight, translated into English for the first time. Included are unheard (of) tales about a clock of a Swiss inventor who promoted "New-Time"-where the day was only twenty hours long, an hour fifty minutes, and a minute fifty seconds-and was subsequently arrested by the authorities, the first portrait ID card in history created for Michel de Montaigne, a fork which reveals the secret history of a meeting of chefs in the Alps, the stone that inspired Thomas Mann to write many of his stories, or the scandalous relationship between the Brothers Grimm and alphabet soup. The book ends with a story about the museum itself which may make some readers ponder about the veracity of its existence. These extraordinary tales of seemingly ordinary objects invite the reader to imagine the world differently by listening more carefully and intimately to all the things that surround our everyday lives. "The present is always a story presented by the winners of history. With a gaze kindred to Walter Benjamin's, Albrecht collects things which appear utterly trivial in the given here and now. With patience kindred to Sigmund Freud's, he listens to them until they start revealing their stories. With a playful spirit kindred to Jorge Luis Borges, he writes them down. The result is a gentle but persistent wake-up call in the form of short stories, which cracks the tyranny of present and offers a glimpse into the unheard (of) world of things devoid of victors and losers, but full of tales that await to be told." - CODY EIKMAN "Berlin exists for Museum der Unerhorten Dinge, or maybe the whole world exists for this small museum. Finally its secrets have been translated into English from German." - TOMOMI ADACHI"
