Book excerpt: This edited volume is the first to engage with material culture in the Tricontinent comprising Asia, Africa and Latin America, interrogating how objects help trace an alternate history of these locales. The potential of material culture to redefine postcolonial subjectivities is explored here through an analysis of various objects, both tangible and intangible. The book serves to subvert Eurocentric formulations of material culture and arrives at a uniquely Tricontinental model of material culture studies. The essays gathered here engage with an entire gamut of issues pertaining to the perception and significance of object-oriented ontologies from a multifaceted perspective. The book offers a glimpse into the vast field of material cultural studies through an engagement with various geopolitical locales in Asia, Africa and Latin America, thereby familiarizing the reader with the nuances of non-European material culture(s).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is in human mind since the very existence of human being. Its knowledge grows with the growth of the human wants, as human wants are unlimited, so as the inventions of science. It justifies the saying that “necessity is the mother of invention”. It is also true that all the sects, communities and tribes of this world are leading their lives somehow scientifically. The sects or communities, whose necessities and expectations are more, their scientific knowledge is more and whose necessity is limited, their scientific knowledge is also limited. Tribes are the indigenous people and they have some indigenous knowledge of science and technology in their daily life. Presence of science is not only noticed in the modern Laboratories and modern industries but also in our daily lives. To know something is ‘Gyan’ (knowledge) and to achieve something is ‘Vigyan’ (Science). For example: to know the presence of ghee in the milk is Gyan, to know the process (technique) how to prepare ghee from milk is Vigyan/Vidya (science/scientific knowledge) and application of this process (scientific knowledge) to the practical aims of ghee preparation is technology. This book contains some aspects of tribal science and technological knowledge.

Book excerpt: Tribal societies in India observe a diverse set of religious practices which are a quintessential part of their community life. This handbook explores rituals, beliefs, ceremonies and festivals, liturgy, knowledge and traditions that tribal people practice today and traces the history of their interaction with other religions, communities and cultures. The book provides analytical, intellectual, and cultural insights into the religious tradition of tribes within the interactive space of a pan-Indian civilisation. It examines contemporary religious practice within tribes while also exploring changes either brought on by interactions or political interventions. The volume reflects on the intersections of cultural or political life of communities and their religious worldviews. The book also discusses the processes of assimilation or adoption of different religion or religious traditions by tribes and the challenges of detribalisation and shrinking populations of vulnerable groups. It explores both established and emerging dynamics in the field of tribe and religion and provides a look into the unique systems of kinship, worship and life within many different tribal communities in India. This and its companion handbook, The Routledge Handbook of Tribe and Religions in India: Contemporary Readings on Spirituality, Belief and Identity, provide a comprehensive look into the religious life and practices of a very diverse group of tribes in India. It will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the fields of religion, anthropology, indigenous and tribal studies, social and cultural anthropology, sociology of culture, sociology of religion, development studies, history, political science, folkloristic, and colonialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional medicine and ethnobotanical research, particularly when the literature and field work data have been properly evaluated. India is one of the twelve mega biodiversity countries of the world having rich in vegetables with a wide variety of plants with medicinal value. In many countries, scientific investigations of medicinal plants have been initiated because of their contribution to healthcare. Herbal medicines have good values in treating many diseases including infectious diseases, hypertension, etc. That they can save lives of many particularly in the developing countries is undisputable. Even today many local and indigenous communities in the Asian countries meet their basic needs from the products they manufacture and sell based on their traditional knowledge. Herbal drugs obtained from plants are believed to be much safer, this has been proved in the treatment of various ailments. Rural communities, in particular scheduled caste tribes, depend on plant resources mainly herbal medicines, food, forage, construction of dwellings, making household implements, sleeping mats, and for fire and shade. Rural people not only depend on wild plants as sources of food, medicine, fodder and fuel, but have also developed methods of resource management, which may be fundamental to the conservation of some of the world's important habitats. The objective of this book is to popularize the ethno medicinal plants species used by the tribals in Kalahandi district of Orissa and the traditional medical practices of the local tribes. Such attempt will protect the traditional knowledge practices of indigenous peoples from disappearing of knowledge and helps in conservation of biological resources for sustainable use. (jacket)
