Book Synopsis Tartaglia’s Science of Weights and Mechanics in the Sixteenth Century by : Raffaele Pisano
Download or read book Tartaglia’s Science of Weights and Mechanics in the Sixteenth Century written by Raffaele Pisano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a historical and scientific analysis as historical epistemology of the science of weights and mechanics in the sixteenth century, particularly as developed by Tartaglia in his Quesiti et inventioni diverse, Book VII and Book VIII (1546; 1554). In the early 16th century mechanics was concerned mainly with what is now called statics and was referred to as the Scientia de ponderibus, generally pursued by two very different approaches. The first was usually referred to as Aristotelian, where the equilibrium of bodies was set as a balance of opposite tendencies to motion. The second, usually referred to as Archimedean, identified statics with centrobarica, the theory of centres of gravity based on symmetry considerations. In between the two traditions the Italian scholar Niccolò Fontana, better known as Tartaglia (1500?–1557), wrote the treatise Quesiti et inventioni diverse (1546). This volume consists of three main parts. In the first, a historical excursus regarding Tartaglia’s lifetime, his scientific production and the Scientia de ponderibus in the Arabic-Islamic culture, and from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is presented. Secondly, all the propositions of Books VII and VIII, by relating them with the Problemata mechanica by the Aristotelian school and Iordani opvsculvm de ponderositate by Jordanus de Nemore are examined within the history and historical epistemology of science. The last part is relative to the original texts and critical transcriptions into Italian and Latin and an English translation. This work gathers and re-evaluates the current thinking on this subject. It brings together contributions from two distinguished experts in the history and historical epistemology of science, within the fields of physics, mathematics and engineering. It also gives much-needed insight into the subject from historical and scientific points of view. The volume composition makes for absorbing reading for historians, epistemologists, philosophers and scientists.

Download or read book Theological Quodlibeta in the Middle Ages: The Fourteenth Century written by Chris Schabel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes on theological quodlibeta, records of special disputations held before Christmas and Easter ca. 1230-1330, mostly at the University of Paris, in which audience members asked the great masters of theology the questions for debate, questions de quolibet, “about anything.” The variety of the material and the authors’ stature make the genre uniquely fascinating. In Volume II, chapters by acknowledged experts cover the quodlibeta of John Duns Scotus, Peter Auriol, John of Pouilly, Peter of Auvergne, and Thomas Wylton; examine the pertinent writings of the religious orders, including the monks, canons regular, and mendicants; revise our understanding of important manuscripts containing quodlibeta; offer critical editions of significant texts; and demonstrate how these writings are crucial for our knowledge of the history of topics in metaphysics and natural philosophy. For all those interested in medieval studies, especially intellectual history.
Book Synopsis Philosophies of the Afterlife in the Early Italian Renaissance by : Joanna Papiernik
Download or read book Philosophies of the Afterlife in the Early Italian Renaissance written by Joanna Papiernik and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immortality of the soul is one of the oldest tropes in the history of philosophy and one that gained significant momentum in 16th-century Europe. But what came before Pietro Pomponazzi and his contemporaries? Through examination of four neglected but central figures, Joanna Papiernik uncovers the rich and varied nature of the afterlife debate in 15th-century Italy. By engaging with old prints, manuscripts and other archival material, this book reveals just how much interest there was in the question of immortality before the 16th-century boom in Aristotelian translations. In particular, Papiernik sheds light on the treatises of Agostino Dati, Leonardo Nogarola, Antonio degli Agli and Giovanni Canali, all of which have until now been overlooked in modern scholarship. From Dati's critiques of ancient and existing positions to Agli's study of immortality and its relation to the metaphysics of light, this volume investigates not only how wide-ranging the debate was but also the important impact it had on later philosophical thinking. Deftly combining close reading with a broad intellectual survey, and including two editions of unpublished primary texts, Philosophies of the Afterlife in the Early Italian Renaissance provides a crucial insight into the development of early Renaissance Platonism and philosophy of religion.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property and Private International Law by : Toshiyuki Kono
Download or read book Intellectual Property and Private International Law written by Toshiyuki Kono and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 1140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Intellectual property and private international law' was one of the subjects discussed at the 18th International Congress of Comparative Law held in Washington (July 2010). This volume contains the General Report and 20 National Reports covering Canada, US, Japan, Korea, India and a number of European countries (Austria, France, Germany, UK, Spain etc). The General Report was prepared on the basis of National Reports. The national reporters not only describe the existing legal framework, but also provide answers for up to 12 hypothetical cases concerning international jurisdiction, choice-of-law and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in multi-state IP disputes. Based on their answers the main differences between legal systems as well as the shortcomings of the cross-border enforcement of IP rights are outlined in the General Report. The Reports in this volume analyse relevant court decisions as well as recent legislative proposals (such as the ALI, CLIP, Transparency, Waseda and Korean Principles). This book is therefore a significant contribution to the existing debate in the field and will be a valuable source of reference in shaping future developments in the cross-border enforcement of IP rights in a global context.

This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the issue of European fiscal State aid in order to provide insights into the related evolution prospects and legal problems. State aid has assumed a central position in the field of taxation, becoming the most important instrument of European legal integration, especially in the area of direct taxes. This is the result of major regulatory and interpretative development, which has altered the initial European and national balances in the face of globalization and the problems of the new economy. In this context, the scope and objectives of State aid have progressively broadened, encompassing a significant level of both positive and negative integration of European national tax systems.
Book Synopsis Giacomo Zabarella, De rebus naturalibus (2 vols.) by : José Manuel García Valverde
Download or read book Giacomo Zabarella, De rebus naturalibus (2 vols.) written by José Manuel García Valverde and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 1301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giacomo Zabarella (1533-1589) was a Renaissance Aristotelian who enjoyed extraordinary prestige in life, especially in the fields of logic and natural philosophy. The De rebus naturalibus libri XXX was completed by Zabarella at the very end of his life: the dedicatory letter to Pope Sixtus V is dated just a month before his death. This writing had great impact and a large influence, as its editorial success in Italy and abroad (especially in Germany) reflects. It represents a massive effort to collect all the issues that come under the heading of “natural philosophy” and that had been taking shape from antiquity to the time of Zabarella within the vast and multifarious field of Aristotelianism: hence its encyclopedic character and extraordinary extension.

Book Synopsis The Politics and Practice of Occupational Health and Safety Law Enforcement by : Diego Canciani
Download or read book The Politics and Practice of Occupational Health and Safety Law Enforcement written by Diego Canciani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a critical approach to examining British and Italian occupational health and safety enforcement policies and questions the legal and political principles that underpin them. The book undertakes a comparative critical analysis of these two jurisdictions’ health and safety regulatory enforcement practices by focusing on the causes and consequences of the under-criminalisation of these crimes. It explores the fundamentals of these two jurisdictions' criminal justice systems and political practices, policies and traditions and exposes how these translate into pragmatic social inequality and injustice for victims of occupational health and safety crimes and, more generally, citizens. Findings are drawn from qualitative interviews conducted with front line occupational health and safety enforcement officers. This book offers an account of the challenges encountered when attempting to scrutinise public institutions responsible for policing crimes of the powerful. The comparison of the political and criminal justice system practices, polices and traditions of the British and Italian legal systems offer a valuable critical contribution to the anglophone literature on the subject and, more generally, on regulatory enforcement policies and practices.
Book Synopsis Comparative Climate Change Litigation: Beyond the Usual Suspects by : Francesco Sindico
Download or read book Comparative Climate Change Litigation: Beyond the Usual Suspects written by Francesco Sindico and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the acknowledgment that climate change is a multifaceted challenge that requires action on the part of all stakeholders, including civil society, and the notion that climate change is at a tipping point with urgent measures needed in the next decade. Against this background, civil society is turning its attention to the courts as a means to directly influence climate action, partly because of the global scepticism towards the progress of global climate action, despite the ongoing implementation of the Paris Agreement. Focusing on the individual, broadly representing civil society, the book offers fresh perspectives on climate change litigation. While most of the literature on climate change litigation examines the same specific jurisdictions, mostly common law countries (US and Australia in particular), this book also considers specific countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America with little or no climate change litigation. It explores the reasons for the lack of litigation and discusses what measures should or could be taken to change this situation and push forward climate action. Unlike other literature on the subject, this book analyses climate change litigation using a scenario-based methodology. Combining rigorous academic analysis with a practical policy-oriented focus, the book provides valuable insights for a wide range of stakeholders interested in climate change litigation. It appeals to civil society organisations around the world, international organisations and law firms interested in climate change litigation.

Download or read book 2009 written by Andrea Bonomi and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current rich volume of the Yearbook attempts to strike a balance in the multifaceted expressions of the increasing importance of private international law at national and supranational levels. The vitality of private international law within the European Union is evidenced by both legislative projects and the rich case law of the European Court of Justice. While the European Commission's draft for a Regulation on succession - which probably constitutes the most detailed and ambitious attempt ever to codify PIL in this area - begins its legislative process, a new initiative on the application of foreign law is being considered by the European institutions. Both of these developments are discussed in the Doctrine section. But the newest Yearbook of PIL also examines interesting developments taking place on other continents. For example, the present volume includes a special section focusing on Chinese PIL and reports on the renewed interest with conflict of laws in the U.S. doctrine.
